hi guys, im totally new to this community, so first of all, i thank u all for being here as a community and gathering so many resources for noobs such as myself =]

well, here's the deal, i plan on buyin a 93 240sx fastback and wanna install an SR20DET. well, problem is, i dunno if itll pass emissions... i live in California where, i understand, emission standards are more stringent than in other states, so does anyone have any info on whether or not it would be legal? if not, is there a way to make the car legal after the swap? also, engine and front clip will cost me 2500 at unstable-hybrids, is that a valid price? thanx guys, ill check back later for info =]

AFAIK, the SR swap is illegal in cali, not necessarily for emissions, but more for their laws on engines and CARB #'s (the SR20DET isn't a DOT approved engine).
The SR with the proper cat(s) should pass basic emissions easily (as far as exhaust gases go). It's visual inspection that will catch it.

hmmm, interesting, what exactly is a DOT approved engine?
also, are there any means of getting around that (other than having a ref lie)?

If you are really worried about passing emissions, then a SR swap is the last thing you need to do, and if you intend to be legal, build a KA....performance, speed, power do not go along with being smog legal. I am not saying it can not be done, but the time and money spent in doing so would make it not worthwhile to me. Thank god for living where emissions testing is a oxy moron
That is my two cents worth..I had to vent

hmmm... also interesting, so would i just be better off buying things for the ka? (in and out system, ecu, whatever else)
i would prefer a total engine swap though because most 93's are already sorta racked on mileage.

MotoRex is working on a CARB legal SR20DET swap. Just wait for that and by the time they get around to it, you'll have the cash for whatever anal raping price they're gonna charge us Californians.

What if someone with an SR used a "dummy KA" valve cover...and had the CARB approved Greddy turbo kit.....would they pass visual inspection?

Your best bet is to go to some shady garage..and pay them an extra $50 to pass your car. (oops...did I say that!?!

What I understand: Engines have ID numbers that correspond to the car. In CA, they are supposed to check those and if they don't match, you go to a ref to get certified (i.e., legal motor from a later year car). Most SR swaps fail every part of this - wrong #s, non-DOT approved motor, motor is ususally older than car. CA is more than a basic visual.

In some states, you may pass a basic visual, but I think I'd find a shady shop (if the state allows private inspections) to be sure. De-tuning and a good cat should pass the sniffer.

As for DOT certification, every car manu has to pass their motors through. This includes certain quality checks (not an issue) and emissions and fuel economy standards (CAFE). SR never went through these, so it is illegal. When I first thought about doing a swap, I called my state DMV emissions questions line. The guy said - no problem with us, BUT, that doesn't include Federal standards. My thoughts - when was the last time a federal cop pulled me over? (actually, here in DC, that's not unheard of!.

will it be pass through oregon inspect if i do the sr swap?

03-11-2002, 04:53 PM
In king county they do not do a visual on the smog test. So if the sr runs clean you'll go no problem. They have even eliminated the inspection for out of state cars coming into washington. So it just has to run clean, if not there are simple alternatives. I am in the middle of a sr swap in the middle of king county and did my homework before I bought.

does anyone know what they laws are in north carolina as far as matching engine numbers? becuase i dont think the private inspection shops would notice that its not a stock engine? and if any shops will do the drop in the raleigh area?
