From what I'm seeing on the lap times, it seems like you guys prefer running 17s over 18s. Why is that?

Cheaper and more available tires, 18's are really too big unless you're going to run 265's or larger, then you have no choice. 17's are the common track wheel size for basically any car other than new platforms that come with larger wheels stock.

Ah gotcha. But besides cost and availability, in terms of performance, would you say there is a huge difference? I know there are a lot of factors that go into play and tire choice also plays a huge role.

Bigger is faster as long as you have enough power to push them. But of course, it comes with a bigger price tag.

How do you feel the z32 does compared to some lighter cars out on the track?

Hmmm,

to be quote honest the additional grip & aerodynamics combined with the SR feel really good. leaps and bounds more grip than an S13 & S14 and without the VG it doesn't feel anywhere near as heavy so it's quite easy to maneuver. it's a shit ton of work to make the SR20 fit in there and work properly but very worth it IMO. if i were to do it all over again I would def start off with an N/A Shell and not use the Six speed to make my life easier but 10/10 recommend the swap for the guys looking to track their Z32's

Correct it was CCW.

Anyone know the estimated time difference between CCW13 and CW13 at Buttonwillow. I know CW13 is faster.

Hoping to get out to willow springs and button willow this winter, but for now my only track time is Grange Motor Circuit from July of this year.

Clockwise: 1:07.44

LS1 S13. 325whp. Fortune coils.
G35 wheels
Front: 225/45 595RS-R
Rear: 245/45 NT555R
(It's a shit setup for the track but awesome at the drags)

Next event is at the same location next month. Have a new wheel and tire setup;
17x9+35 RPF1 wrapped in 255/40 595 RS-RR all around.

man, no east coast lap times representing in here. I'll share some of mine in a bit.

Here's a website that was recently released that's trying to compile lap times at tracks all over and linking the lap videos to them:

https://www.tracklaps.net/

If it takes off, it'll be a great database.

Hawk HPS. I'm contemplating running their autocross/track pad (HB178N.564). Still somewhat streetable and has a better bite with less brake fade than the HPS pads. They're noisier, and make more dust, but i guess that's the compromise for better performance.

Oh Jesus man, you're not doing yourself any favors! HPS can fade on the street from a couple of highway stops. HP+ are better, but not by much. Do yourself a favor and get dedicated track pads if you're serious and swap them in.

I used to run the HP+ pads, predominately for the track, but there was to and from the track driving as well. They were effective with Powerslot rotors and a 135 WHP KA24DE full out on Big Willow and Streets.

They are certainly better than HPS, but I remain skeptical based on my own experience in 100's of track hours in my old endurance race car with a basic KA24DE. I used to get DTC-60/30 front/rear split on z32 brakes to suffer from poor pad transfer due to overheating and the car was only 2400lbs race weight.

They wouldn't fade, just pad depositing and cause bad pulsation/judder. Once I ducted the front they were ok, but the rear dtc-30 would still get overworked and smear all over the rotor. HT-10 in the rear fixed that and helped balance the brakes better too.

This all depends on skill level, track and level of commitment, obviously. Seeing that he has an LS swap, and how fast an LS13 can potentially be, HP+ are less than ideal if he wants deceleration performance/consistency to match his acceleration and speed potential.

.

I’ll be driving the car to the next event. Peter recommended the DTC-70 pad, but they’re a bit out of my price range, and I don’t want more front bias because I’m keeping the HPS pads in the rear. The car has to make a road trip to Missouri at the end of April, and I want a pad that will be up to the task of Buttonwillow and a 1,500 mile trip. I’m looking at HP+ or the Street Race pad.

Understood and agreed with the amount of available power HP+ are less than ideal. However, given the desire to drive the car on the street without extra noisy and expensive pads they may be the better compromise. Here is where driver experience and skill can make up for the equipment deficiency and make it all work enough to have fun. Shorter slower tracks (like Adams, Grange or even Streets) won't be an issue. Big Willow and Buttonwillow all out with LS1 power will smoke those pads though.

I actually will be adding weight in the future. More sound deadening in the trunk area, and probably 2 8" subs, maybe even a half cage. I want to go fast but i also drive my car to the track and i gotta have music!

I'm not sure.. I ran into personal things twice before the bw event.. my best time there so far is 2:03 with stock e46 m3 running rs3. hopefully I can get into low 50's with 240 running TDs.

Most notable observation, they wear like iron. Here's the FL tire after ~20 hours of track time completed last weekend:

https://i.imgur.com/u36Imoil.jpg

They are known to wear like this, which is why they are popular in street tire limited endurance racing series'.

But, they have good grip for the wear they offer. Not like RE71R or Rival S grip, but those tires would likely be wrecked in 6-8 hours on my car.

They were predictable, made some noise, but quieter than Falken's. They didn't drop off in grip throughout the weekend. The fastest lap of the weekend was set in the last hour of the race. They will likely be heat cycled out of grip before they wear out.

In cool rain they were a bit scary, but the car is also raw and not setup well for the rain (throttle response, rear diff, etc.)

OG RT615’s, not even “K’s”, much less “+”! I haven’t done much yet. I need to do the trac arm setup as shown in the Motoiq vid, but with 2 track days in December, I didn’t have much time... I went to Big Willow Dec 8th, but didn’t beat my 1:38, the track or tires didn’t feel very grippy, only ran 1:39’s. Of course that 1:38 is from early 2009, so comparing is pretty difficult... OG RT615....what is the date code on those bad boys?! lol

And the Nexen Sur4g tire seems to be more popular on the west coast. I don't see anyone running them by me, at least in endurance racing. Perhaps they won't hold up to many hours of racing?

Comparable to RE71R?

The SUR4G we have seen perform almost on par with the re71r with more heat cycles. It stays very consistent and grippy until the end. Its very consistent we have knocked out 30 min sessions with lap times all within a second of each other. We also get more events out of a set vs the same size re71r. This is on an NA car with no aero so results can change. I know OP has experience with them as well.

The Nexen’s are too expensive to justify. I could get z3 star specs for just a lil more. Don’t really understand why people run the Nexen’s for $160/tire...

Thanks. You have any apples to apples lap time comparisons?

The 30 min sessions with minimal lap time deviation is probably more of a testament to your driving skills than the tires ;)

Id have to ask the 370z drivers since I have a couple that used both. As for me it wouldnt be apple to apples since its the same car with different drivers and the re71r we used were like 275/265/35/18? stagger where the sur4g are 245 40 18

The Black S13 is more of a loaner car for Nissan Challenge and a platform for me to play with settings. Its usually driven by Steven Doherty who was a pro driver from Nissan from the playstation academy and then by my friend Mario who was his student. For reference Doherty did a 2:04 at BW CW13 during the hottest time of the day in Summer with tires on their last leg. Im more of the dude with a clip board and taking feedback to make changes. Hopefully ill be getting back out driving myself this year.

If you are running Nissan Challenge and dont already have a good hookup on Federals you can get them at close to cost if you let Chris there know you run in the series.

Thanks! I feel like if the temp was a little higher I could have gotten that 1:29... It was pretty cold, was having trouble getting enough heat into the tires to get them to work. The morning session was super sketchy, like driving on ice... Gotta stop messing around with used tires if I wanna progress...

We'll see! I'm trying to do one event a month, I'll be at Sonoma in May with SpeedSF.

For now I'm just trying to get seat time in a variety of tracks, not necessarily be in a challenge league. Might join SpeedSF challenge or Nissan Challenge depending on how it goes.

Awesome! Nissan challenge is actually very casual. we try to help each other if anything.

Love the details on your car. p90d, marble looking center piece, tire touching the fender(?) lol, expensive gloves :)

If I may throw in my two cents, I think your spring rates are overkill and rear shocks are under-damped. good driving though!

This weekend was my first trip to Chuckwalla! It was a very interesting experience going to a track I have absolutely no knowledge of, don’t think I’ve ever done that before with all my Dad’s years of SCCA racing! I kinda wasted most of the day running with too much tire pressure, but it was a valuable lesson, finally developing an actual understanding of tire pressure.

Chuckwalla CW: 2:10.102
S13, 130ish hp stock internal KA, 255/40/17 rs-rr, 2800ish lbs w/driver, body kit w/non-adjustable wing (no aero)

I would like to thank the red Miata driver for getting out of my way so efficiently in the video! LOL!

Nice work. Decent amount of tire rubbage on left handers with compression there. Looks like a bumpy track, or your dampers and springs are too stiff, or you're too low, or a combination of all 3 ;)

Track looks like proper fun though. Keep at it!

Honestly, I’m not a big fan of Chuckwalla... Most of the corners are about the same speed and a lot of them tighten up at the end, lots of double apexes. It kind of gives the track no flow for me, a bit monotonous... I need to be much more aggressive and use the curbs a lot more honestly. I was driving a bit cautiously because the car was under steering so bad for the first 3 sessions when the tires were over inflated.

Not a 240, but I'm catching up on edits with older drives. Took my daily to laguna for fun a year ago. I'll be adding a Big Willow time on the s14 in the next few days once I get the editing done.

Was looking for the fastest NA KA24DE time around BW13CW and came across this thread so I thought I should add my times! I'm aiming for a SUB 2 lap at BW13CW with minimal aero and with a NA KA. Trolling the forums for any help I can get.
