ok now a turbo has the compressor and the....thingy attached to the exhaust headers. &nbsp;they are connected by a shaft to the two thingys that spin to compress the air. &nbsp;now instead of having two housings why not have one separated by a wall. &nbsp;that would keep size and mass down and since mass would be less it would spool faster. &nbsp;ok now someone throw a stone into my idea so that i can see whats wrong with it or if they already make it. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

You mean one housing separated by a "wall"? &nbsp;Like, NO center section?

ok herez why they do that!
the way TURBOCHARGERS work is there is a shaft the runs between the compressor hosing and turbin hosing. the compressor hosing only touches CLEAN air...it is sucked up from the compressior wheel and does in and into you intercooler. *now the the shaft spins becuase the it is connected to the other end to the turbin wheel, which is turned by the EXHAUST FUMES that come out of the engine!...it pushed the turboin wheel and goes on to the exhaust

what your saying would make CLEAN and dirty air comeinto the engine...like sticking your muffer to you throttle body!...not smart!...thats why both sectons and air tight and wont let anything from the other side in!!!!!

for super chargers go to the * and replace with a gelt driven pully connected to you car! &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

I could not have said it better myself... turbo's are dependant on exhaust gases to begin the spoolup process, where as a supercharger is dependant on crankshaft speed and rotation...the seperation needs to exist for the turbo to be efficent, otherwise the volume of exhaust gases from the exhaust side would interupt the intake charge being brought in

I think what he meant was if you just smooshed everything together. &nbsp;It would work, sort of, but it would suck. &nbsp;The reason the center section is big is because there are parts of each wheel that have to be supported, plus thrust bearings as well as semi-floating bearings, etc. &nbsp;They just need room. &nbsp;Also, a compressor housing shaped like a half-circle would flow like poo. &nbsp;The spiral put on the air would be broken up, it's just bad. &nbsp;Also, having a turbine housing attached to a compressor housing would mean that compressor housing would get about as hot. &nbsp;This would mean it would have to be made of cast iron also, $$$$. &nbsp;In short, don't try to reinvent the wheel. &nbsp;But what do I know, I'm only 17.

i dont understand you 2-d diagram???.... <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> ...so i'll just say this...u need a centersection to "hold" oil to cool down the shaft...also for non ball bearing turbos the shaft glids on a thin film of oil...to u people taking physics...frictionless serface....it cant just be in air
