i have an sr20 with manley forged rods and CP pistons in it, other than that the longblock is stock, im not sure what the bearing clearances are at but im assuming (and hoping:-/) theyre within spec. i live in california so its roughly 70-100 degrees every day. i was thinking 10w-40, 15w-40 or something similar to that

opinions?

any preferred brands of oil?

Run whatever you like, just make sure it has the API mark on the bottle.

Always ran castrol full synthetic 10/40 and never had any issues whatsoever

I built my sr20 with eagle rods and cp pistons, and i run 15w 45 mobil one, after breakin of course. Nice thick tractor oil lol

I dunno about castroil, I think they used recycled oil, thats what my old sensei told me at least

i believe quaker state is paraffin wax based and castrol is supposed to be good stuff but i could also be wrong lol

ive honestly been contemplating running 15w40 rotella t6, a lot of turbo LS and drag car guys run that with no qualms in engines making a lot more power than this

The FSM says "5W-30" is preferable, meaning that you always run the thinnest oil you can get away with for best results. You only need to increase the weight in a stock engine if the ambient temperature is always above 0*F. You may step up to a 20W-50 after 50*F ambient temp.

do you see what is happening here? the hotter it is outside the higher the weight oil you are using. Do not just stick a heavy oil into an engine because "other people use it".

actually ended up going with the 15w-40 t6 rotella :naughty:

and yes i understand the relationship between oil viscosity and temperature...not what the thread was about

Rotella T6 is a good choice and not expensive compared to Amsoil.
