So I was having to put a new gasket on the belt tensioner tonight when my buddy picked the chain up and it dropped a link. Now the two black links don't match the dots on the sprockets. But everything is at tdc. So my question is since the crank pulley reads tdc and the cams read tdc can I run it regardless that the colored links are matching?

When you say crank pulley reads tdc I'm assuming your front cover is still on and its the mark on the pulley your looking at and not the chain on the sprocket. If that is the case then no your timing will be off. You have to unbolt the cam's and fix the chain.

The colored links on the timing chain DO NOT MATTER. They are only used for initial assembly of the engine and timing setup. Here's a simple step by step for cam timing:

1. #1 at TDC.
2. Exhaust cam gear dowel pin at 12 o'clock.
3. 20 timing chain pins between the dots on the cam gears.

At this point you would then reinstall the chain tensioner, rotate the engine around back to #1 at TDC on the compression stroke (2 rotations). It all should remain lined up as it was before.

Make sure notch on crank pulley is lined up at the second from left. Chain needs to have 10 links from one another.
