car idling low/dying at idle?

my car's running on all four cylinders, but the idle's shaky and around 500 rpm's... and it frequently dies when i lay off the gas and let it idle.... any ideas?

Got black soot coming out of your exhaust?

If so, this is one of the most common 240SX problems... usually you can fix it by checking the wiring to the MAF, cleaning the MAF, checking the vacuum connections to the AIV, and cleaning it, too. I had that problem, I did all that, it fixed it. I'm not sure which fix actually did it.

I also changed the plugs at that time because they were carbon-fouled from the engine running extremely rich for a while.

ehh.. it took a lotta crap to fix my idle.. besides cleaning the stuff in previous post, check ur ground wires.. this fixed it for me, along with bringing back power for watever crazy ass reason. if you have the money, just to make ur engine run a bit better replace ur O2 sensor and fuel filter.. for a couple weeks this helped my idle, but the redoing my ground wires sealed the deal. good luck.
