I have a 1990 fastback with 83,000 miles with original transmission mated to a 1993 DOHC engine with 110,000 miles. I swapped the DOHC into the 1990 myself and everything runs fine, except for one problem with the transmission.
It shifts through all the gears fine, but whenever I put it into 5th, it just pops right out, I have never gotten it to stay in 5th for any longer than maybe 5 seconds unless I hold it there. If i hold the shifter in 5th, it will stay and run fine. What could the problem be? is it the 5th gear synchro gone? Anything I could do other than replace the transmission?
