So we finally finished the project today. Started the car up and let it run a bit, gave it a few revs and noticed first problem was an exhaust leak somewhere around the manifold. No biggie, fix that later..... Then I take a glance and notice my Oil pressure gauge is reading 0. Quickly shut down the motor and check this out. We unhooked the line at the sender and cranked the car over, oil shot out like a money shot onto jenna jamison's back. So either I made a dumb mistake someowhere wiring it or the gauge is junk. But there is pressure and there are no oil leaks anywhere whatsoever so we take it for the first run. As soon as I get on the gas boost jumps to 14psi. My tial spring is .7 bar, so that's bad. Turn around and head back and switch the vacuum line on the WG (oops). So we take it out for attempt 2, 1st and 2nd pull great, getting about 6-7 psi now. As soon as I shift to third and give it gas the thing slips like mad, this is a 97 with only 59k on it. Other than that it runs great. The leak is kinda loud but we'll work on that tomorrow. Overall very pleased right now, already reading 12-12.3 A/F down low and 11.5-11.8 up high and under severe load. Just where I want it and we barely adjusted anything. So apparently I need a clutch, this car will never see more than 300rwhp so I'm thinking going with the ACT, I'm not a fan of Spec. I'll post pics as soon as my friend e-mails 'em to me. Dyno run coming next weekend.

holy crap, that's weird....... I'm just about to get my car boosting and I'm running a z31 T3 and a starion IC too. Must be popular. good luck man! Where did you get a flange for the DP? I'm having one hell of a time finding one to make my DP with. All the domestic 3-hole DP flanges are just a little bit too small bolt hole pattern.

Awesome work man1!!
dang i cant wait to put mine on...
may 13th is less than a month away (my last final is may 13th, gonna start installing the turbo right after it)
Looks like its raining T3.. Im putting T3 super 60, .63 turb A/R in mine

for some reason.. i regret spending 500 bux on JWT ecu... :(
wideband 02 + safc seems like a better choice...

how much timing did you retard from the stock timing?
stock timing = 20 degrees BTDC

RBS14: We cut our own flange out of half inch steel with a plasma cutter, same for the exhaust flanges. I don't think you'll find anyone that makes a flange for it.

Skatanic: it cost a lot more than you may think, there are lots of other expeneses involved than those parts, had to move the battery to the trunk to fit the cold pipe, used all stainless steel bolts everywhere and a bunch of other crap I can't think of right now. During the final couple days of building we made about 7 trips to hardware stores and steel shops and spent 250$ on misc. parts. It adds up real fast. All in all I spent about 3k$.

Endtanks were rewelded, both come out the top and angled to go above the headlights, we made the IC pipes as short as possible.

Stock timing still, for around 6psi it shold be fine. May turn it back a couple degrees today after i drive it a little more but there was no knocking going on that I could pick up on. I will be installing an MSD BTM very soon and turning the boost up to 9 or 10. I have never had any experience with the JWT ECU, but personally I would never run a turbo vehicle without a wideband. Personal preference, I like to know what's going on at all times.

Curiousity, where did you get it? If it's just the stock elbow flange cutoff you won't be able to weld the downpipe to that for crap.

Thanks man. I'm in portland, about 45 minutes north of New hampshire. I don't know any of those guys, there's like 2 other 240's I know of around here, that's about it. I finally got around to taking some good pics last night. AS we were taking them I got pulled over by a cop to see "what we were up to". I got a 122$ ticket for no inspection sticker. Expensive photo shoot! I'll post them today (finally) I'd be down for a meet.

Yeah he was a dink about it too. First of all we were taking pictures in a parking lot. Once we got in our cars and pulled out of the parking lot he pulled me over. Now the best part is when I was giving him my info, i went to unbuckle my seatbelt to get my license out and he got spooked for some reason. I just said "I have to unbuckle my seatbelt to get my wallet"..... so he goes to his car for 10 minutes and comes back with a ticket. Then asks me why i wasn't wearing a seatbelt!! I was like WTF!? You saw me unbuckle it, I told you as I was doing it. So then he tells me to turn my lights on (HID'S) and is about to pop my hood. I told him the HID's were stock Nissan that were on the car when I bought it. So he left it alone and just gave me the inspection sticker ticket. What a waste of 122$ though. So much for my clutch right off. On a good note the pictures apparently came out really well, got a couple of the engine now as well. My friend is e-mailing them to me today.

I am one of thows 240sxONE guys, forums.240sxone.com (curently down ), we have a few KA-t guys around, and a few other peaple in maine also.

I just finished my KA-T with a T3. congrats man, and good luck ! ^_^

I think I am running like 16-18 degrees retarted at 5.9 psi that might give you an idea on what to play with till you get on the dyno

If your running the stock MAF, be careful!
I went through 2 of them, probably b\c we installed mine in the charge pipe; but my car started to run lean around 15psi.

Well for now I'm leaving the timing alone. I'm running 7psi and quite rich, mid 11's for the most part. It runs great and no pinging. My MAF is at 95% so I'm all set for now. I spent a couple hours driving around and taking A/F readings and such and really found nothing to change. I could lean it out a little but I want to leave the timing as is. I'll be installing a clutch, BTM and new MAF soon and bumping it up to 10psi and I am going to keep it there.

zadok, its probably because you have changed the diameter of your charge piping right before the mafs like that...

Yep, stock color. Deep fuschia that came on the 97-98 models. I'm still waiting on the pics we took the other night. Thought I would have had them by now.......

Mr. Spool

what does changing the size of your charge piping do.

RBS14
05-01-2004, 02:55 PM
^^^

It creates turbulence so the MAF might not always read the right amount of air.

AN89HATCH
05-02-2004, 01:45 AM
lets say if you where to have different size charge pipes lets say 3 inch from manifold, going to 2 inch intercooler, will this cause a problem?

KOUKI KA-T
05-02-2004, 04:41 AM
What exactly do you mean?? My hotpipe is 2" and my cold pipe is 2.5". This actually allows for less turbulence. You're hot pipe doesn't need to be any bigger than the outlet of the compressor. The turbulence issue he is addressing is because he has the MAF in his cold pipe and is changing the diameter of piping going in and out of the MAF, which is not a very good idea.

Mr. Spool
05-02-2004, 09:16 AM
so your pipes can change sizes and thats okay, as long as you dont have varring size pipes going in and out of your maf.

andrave
05-02-2004, 12:46 PM
charge pipes, change size or whatever... doesn't matter
its just that going from a small pipe to a large pipe right before the maf isn't a good idea...
mafs are pains in the ass.

So the night pictures aren't working. As long as it's nice again this weekend and I have the camera I will get some decent pics of the engine. Here's one bad one though  .... and a couple obligatory gas station photos.

It won't let me post anymore than these 2 I guess.....

Why does that SS oil line look like it's going over to the intake side of the motor? It looks like a feed line, however that port on the turbo is the oil outlet. the feed line (on z31 turbos) goes into the turbo on the other side of it. Just wondering.

That is not the drain line, It's the feed and it runs to my oil sandwich plate. I clocked my turbo to use an external gate on it and top mount it. Do you really think I would be driving around with the oil inlet and outlet reversed? :wiggle:

RBS14
05-03-2004, 09:49 PM
No, of course I do not think you would/could be driving around with them switched. However; I am looking at my Z31 turbo right now and that Feed line on yours goes right into what is the drain on my turbo (the larger of the two holes).

So since you top mounted it you are using the stock inlet as the outlet and outlet as the inlet?

KOUKI KA-T

Like I said, I clocked mine. You can clock the turbine and compressor side of a turbo. loosen the 6 bolts on the compressor side and it can be clocked, so i clocked mine enough to move the feed to the top and drain to the bottom.

p.s. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you have to though, on a 20 year old turbo it takes a lot of PB blaster, heat and hammering to get thing to spin. And if you're no careful you can ruin it.

RBS14
05-03-2004, 10:26 PM
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. I got ya. I only thought about clocking the compressor side, not the turbine. Cool. Thanks for explaining it to me.

Yeah, I'm bottom mounting mine so as you know the hotpipe routing is going to go really close to the strut tower but I'm just gonna have to make it work. I thought about clocking it but decided it was going to be too much work.
