Hi guys, im having an issue with my s13 blacktop sr20det. I disconnected the alternator and power steering pump and narrowed it down to the main pulley. So im assuming its probably a bad oil pump? Its such a weird noise.

here is the video. Your input is appreciated.

I've never heard that. Very interesting and I would love to know the cause as well.

Some things to think about:

The pulley installs very close to the engine. Get under the engine and check the space between the pulley and the engine, look for signs of something rubbing.

Check the crankshaft keyway, remove the pulley and inspect the surface where the pulley rides the crankshaft.

If it is related to the oil pump or oil pump related failure, that can ruin the engine of course. So keep this in mind as you diagnose the issue- if the noise suddenly stops for instance, the oil pressure could drop to zero!

I've heard a similar noise from turbochargers before. check the shaft play and maybe oil feed just in case? Sometimes the compressor wheel rides the housing and generates a noise like that. Check the compressor fins for abrasion.

good luck

maybe a vac leak? I've had something like that on the intake, where it meets the head, I missed a piece of old gasket and didn't seat all the way and made a loud whistle just like that.

its a long shot but just my .02

I'd like to hear what happens when the clutch is disengaged. Also what happens when you pinch the pcv line.

:duh: Thanks guys so glad its a cheap/easy fix
