cams or rod?

I have what appears to be rod knock going on, but someone earlier today asked if it could possibly be a messed up cam. how would I check this. How do you know what went bad. Thanks.

A good way to detect rod knock... and to tell which rod is bad... is to let the engine idle.. and pull one spark plug wire at a time. Pull one.. if the noise goes away, you know that is your cylinder with the rod knock.. if the noise doesn't stop.. put the wire back on.. and move to the next cylinder.

Thanks travis, I tried that but all I that happened was that with each plug I pulled the car would only start to run rough but the knock would not go away. that is why I kinda thought it might be a cam. I have no real experience with cams going bad so I dont know what they would sound like.

I am about to pull the valve cover off of the engine what should I look for when I do this. Thanks.
