My friend offered to sell me his slightly used GT28RS that he removed from his VW 1.8t. Is a direct "bolt on" affair, or is their a difference between a GT28RS designed for the sr20det and the 1.8t VW engine?

I am pretty sure they would be the same. The GT28RS isnt bolt on for a VW, they have to get a manifold with a t2x style flange, or an adapter.

I assume this was an aftermarket turbo on his car... because they certainly don't come with them stock. This is the 'disco potato' turbo, IMO the best turbo there is out there for the SR if you like smaller turbos. A max of ~320 HP and full boost around 2400 RPM... mmmmm. Yes, it's a direct bolt on, but I would reccomend a new turbo extension (like the GReddy) at the same time to fully utilize the new turbo.

hmm.. what other turbo's do you guys recommend for the SR?
ones that will still fit the t-25 style flange.

GT28RS
GT28R

Both of those are full ball bearing, and a new GT28R is $800. Or you can just get a normal ole T28 for like $400. I got my GT28R for $300. :)
