View Full Version : No steering!!! Help!! Zilvia gurus

So here's my story...

I been rebuilding my 240, setting up for drift events. I did all the work I can myself and installing suspension components and what not including a welded diff.

I took it to shop that specializes in performance/aftermarket/modified cars. They did an alignment for me and told me that in order to get the car properly aligned they center my rack and had to uninstall and reinstall it to do so.

I got the car back this past thursday and noticed that a click noise when I turned the wheel.. Eventually this clicking noise turned into the steering wheel spinining with out turning the wheels. Feels almost as if theres teeth or something on the rack that have gotten rounded out.

I toook it back to the shop today, and off the bat a rep there was telling me he thinks may be because i have a welded diff it adds an excess amount of force on the pinion and gears and could have caused them to round out.

Just want to know if this is a logical explanation. Ive seen tons and tons of 240s not only with welded diffs but drifting with them (dont see how you can put more force on it than that)

ALSO please note, i do not have power steering, dont know if that could make a difference as well.

CAR is an S13 btw if it matters

my guess is your rack and pinion was getting ready to strip and the shop removing/reinstalling it was all it took. the welded diff most likely wouldnt be the reason because it adds more force to the rear and will cause excess tire wear and even add stress to the rear suspension components but as far as the front of the car and the steering, not so much. Id say the shop screwing with the rack and pinion was what it took for it to strip and your best bet is to get a new one.

The problem was probably caused by the lack or power steering helping the rack move back and forth which put more pressure on the intermediate shaft on the steering and possibly the shop did not tighten the clamps on the shaft all the way when the reinstalled the rack and connected it back up to the steering shaft.

So when you turned the force from trying to turn caused the intermediate shaft to slip. Pretty sure it has nothing to do with the fact you have a welded diff.

Hope that make sense.

Thing is I have driven my previous 240 with out power steering for years no issue...drifting and everything

I just picked up this shell and swapped everything over..and added the welded diff...went for a normal drive nothing excessive and the steering rack strips ( it was fine previously)...thats not making too much sense to me if the diff isnt the issue, especially since it will soo conveniently strtip two days after the shop took it down and reinstalled it.

I guess then, its as Nissanota240 said..Shop perhaps did not tighten clamps all the way..

The dif has no effect on the steering components for the car, sounds to me like the clamp on the splines just came loose, if its stripped then I guess you'll have to get another one.

Install new RNP, get alignment....drifffff

*btw i had a welded diff....it fucked up one of my rear hubs :(, so i went back to open Diff. Currently trying to save up
for a 2-way
