Option 1-order Nismo 2-way for 800 shipped

Option 2- wait for Tomei 2-way and pay 800 plus shipping(not in stock till march)

Is the tomei one any better quality than the nismo? this will be my first lsd, i know i dont need the best but if it's just waiting a couple more weeks for a better one i'll wait.

why don't you start with a VLSD since its your first, then you can see what you would like more from a LSD and make a better choice

just my .02

i suggest the nismo 2 way.

dont bother wasting time and money on a vlsd.

Sticky240: What's the point of getting a VLSD if you're going to have to sell it and buy something new in just a few months cuz you realize it sucks compared to a clutch type diff.

The thing is, those diffs are different. How many plates does the nismo one have? I bet it doesn't lock like the Tomei. I had so much fun drifting with my Tomei this weekend. It made things so fucking predicatable. If I were concerned with lap times, I'd want something that locked less for easier corner entry and that would probably be the nismo. Do you what you think will be best for you.

thanks flybeezee. i guess i'll have to research the clutch packs for the nismo ..most ppl are happy with them but if i can get the better one, why not get the better one.

Well since i'm unexpeirenced (sp?) my plan was to do with VLSD to see how having one feels like. I don't see anything wrong with getting a VLSD.

Ofcourse when I felt comfotable and when I see fit, I would upgrade. But for me right now, that is the road i'm taking

vlsd and clutch type are very very different though. If you are a newbie its usually suggested you drift with an open diff before trying it with a LSD...
anyway, you can pack the lsd in a different arrangement if you want a different lock up characteristic...

nismo
also because rebuild parts are easy to get thru dealer! definately a plus.

vlsd is a waste of money. it sucks.

flybert dood it snot about how many plates
it about how fast it locks up. plates arent important as its lockup speed. im sure my nismo SSS locks up faster then yours and its adjustable lockup AND i have less plates.

mine's 3 way adjustable (which can be adjusted in 1/2 hour) and 1.5 and 2 way adjustable (with disassembly)

can your tomei do that?

fyi: Nismo SSS was replaced w/ Nismo GT PRO which i highly suggest for road racing (if you dont go helical) or drifting.

ona side note, i'd say a HUGE majority of D1gp drivers use nismo...if that means anything..most toyotas seem to use TRD..so go figure what you want, just side info. even in magazines i dont see many folks with Tomei or KAAZ...of cousre that doesnt mean a whole lot but something to think about.could be a reason? could be price could be availabitlity...just misc info to ponder

i love my nismo 2 way, it ownz. i hope you realize it'll make your daily ride quality sux. it'll speed up tirewear and make loud noises that makes it seem as if your car is broken (heh heh).

if you're getting LSD for drifting, i also suggest doing a little practice with an open diff before getting an LSD. Clutch types are good, but sometimes too good. If you know what i mean, you can't really tell if it is your technique/skill or just that badass LSD doing all the work for you. Just a suggestion, but i wouldn't go too long without one.

yeah Nismo :lockd:

i think its ironic that when it comes to clutch LSDs, the base Nismo unit is the econo, 'good valued', cheaper buy, heh heh.

Dousan i sadly wasnt talking about the Gt Pro cause i know that one is the shiznit.

The one i was considering is 800 bucks shipped. If i'm not mistaken it's the one with only 2 clutches in it(is that the one you have?)The tomei is 800 plus shipping, soo lets say 900 .

How often do you change your setup? i probably wouldnt ever. Between the cheaper Nismo and the Tomei, which do you think you would use?

Flybert
02-11-2004, 03:03 PM
Dousan: the one he is talking about is supposed to be the "street" style one on phase2's site. That's why I'm assuming that it doesn't lock up as quick as my tomei. I know it has to do with plate arrangements and not the number of plates but it seems like the standard nowadays is to have more plates. When someone mentions they are getting an $800 Nismo LSD, they sure as hell aren't getting a SSS or GT PRO unless they have a serious hookup. You can talk all you want about yours and how it works but that's not what he's getting.

As far as being able to rebuild a Tomei, that's why we have KAAZ USA.

Just go with what you can afford, It's not like you're building a "drift" car.

All D1 drivers are sponsored in one way or another, where as we are not. So before anyone start saying that D1 drivers use brand X only, just think about how they got it.

Flybert

TheTicTac: I know I have been setting up my car so that it's a "drift" car. It's set up to drift and I like drifting it, so what about it isn't a drift car. Personally, I like calling it "the race car made for the street" based off of some show I saw called "High Rev Tuners." As for what professional drivers use, I will try to emulate them because usually they know what works best and if I can afford the high quality expensive shit, I will buy the high quality expensive shit. I would love to be rocking a diff like Dousan's but I couldn't afford it at the time. I like my Tomei. Kaaz is around the corner for rebuild stuff. It locks up very quick and it was really fun to drive on the track. It has treated me well so far.

Dousan: I know it's not good to base an opinion off of what a business tells you but phase2 feels that the Kaaz and Tomei are better.

Quote by Phase2:

Nismo clutch type "street" limited slip differential kit for all 1989-98 240SX equipped with OE open diff or VLSD from the factory. Nismo LSD drops right into diff pumpkin with no modifications, uses existing output shafts, LSD is set at 70 lb-ft breakaway torque from Nismo, comes with diff fluid, new bearings, diff cover gasket, and output flange seals. Everything you need to install the LSD into your 240SX! Please change the diff fluid after break in.

Each side of the diff comes with:

2 friction plates
2 friction discs
1 spring disc
1 spring plate

Some people found this Nismo units to be fairly quiet, and doesn't make much noise as compared to the Kaaz Unit. However for persistent race use and drifting, the KAAZ unit is a superior unit over Nismo.

as usual, what is easier to live with on the street is a compromise on the track.

True Dat.

Flybert: emulate whomever you want to, I'm not going to stop you. But if you need High dollar items for your car in order to drift your rwd car, that's your prerogative.

i believe it was Dousan who was recommending the high dollar items that drifters use in D1..more expensive than the one flybert has and much more useless to most of us

I don't need high dollar items to drift my car. When did I ever say that? I can drift my car stock if I wanted to. I like to have nice products on my car that work well with the specific type of driving I do. I like buying things that are well built, high quality, and will increase the performance of my car without having regrets about my purchase. I don't like buying things that I feel I will have to change in the next few months because it doesn't meet my needs. It is for these reasons that I do a lot of research on what I buy, wait for insano deals on the expensive items that I want, and jump on them as soon as they are available to me.

This is kinda off topic but is there a Torsen LSD for our cars? I had one in my FD3S and man I loved it

P.S. our cars mean Z32 300zx TT, and s13-s14 240sx

Var

Is torsen the same as mechanical..cause s15 have helical lsd..i think that's the same. a couple of guys have done the swap ask around or search

racetrick?!? what's that? i'm interested in the GT Pro now. Jspec advertised for 1500 shipped, but 1100 sounds more reasonable. i cant find their website. i already searched google

EDIT: i think you meant rare trick cause that's the website i found

someone from kaaz usa said that the tomei IS the same exact diff as the kaaz.
they said on this board actually.
you can get the kaaz cheaper if you look around some.

My tomei which is made by Kaaz is set to 100%. I might set it to something lower later like maybe 80% but for now I like how it performed over the weekend and I most likely won't change it. It clunks a shitload on tight turns but I really don't mind it. I go clutch in through tight turns to get rid of most of the noise. Sooner or later I'll get wider rims with wider tires to match and the clunking won't be as bad.

how do you set it up between differnt % rates?

Flybert

Arrangement of plates for kaaz, tomei, and normal nismo. SSS and GT PRO are a different story. I think you have to remove the axles and output shafts to adjust it. Much easier. I wish I had an SSS or GT PRO. If you can afford it, go for one of those.

Thank you for mentioning my shop :)

Nismo SSS is no longer available (unless someone has old stock). The GT is the newest Nismo LSD. Thier is several reasons to get the GT series over other setups, but mainly because it replaces Everything (not just the LSD).
Yes, it cost more... But its one of the only 2 LSDs in the world that survived a full season of Gymkana without being serviced. The other is the Cusco RS.

GT is non adjustable, GT Pro is adjustable 1.5 & 2 way by removing the passenger side Flange, *New GT Pro TT has a diffenernt plate angle, and alows for better corner speed & exit. :faint:

enjoy...

If you can get it for $800 then go for it... yen is 99,000 and the currency exchange sucks (G.W. Bush :smash: Rare Trick)... If Sam has it or can get it for that, I will be very very impressed!!

fuckin a!
dont spread bad info dood! dammit!

no you DONT need to do that

you just unbolt the passenger side axles and 1/2 shaft.
push axle back and up and then pop output shaft out (comes out easy)
change setting, put back together
takes 1/2 hour! that's it! and its 3 way adjustable for torque breakaway!!!

MadScientist: GREAT info. im soo gla di have nismo still. and people wonder why most people in japan rock cusco and nismo units!
haha awesome!

Flybert
02-14-2004, 01:26 AM
I didn't mean completely remove the axle. Just unbolt it and move it out of the way and hang it to the side. Guess it came out wrong. You knew what I was getting at. Dousan, have you ever driven a car with the Tomei or the Kaaz? How would you compare them to your nismo? I know you said that yours will lock up quicker than mine but do you know for sure because mine feels like it locks up instantaneously? What torque setting do you like running yours on?

Dousan_PG
02-14-2004, 12:30 PM
ive driven kaaz
so i drove tomei hahaha

my is running full lock right now
lindsay is at sofest settings its almost full lock too haha (aftermarket clutch does wonders)

mines nearly always locked. but my stock clutch keeps it comfy and i am pretty easy on the clutch. when i get my new clutch its going to be nuts.
