For higher revving that is, I heard that the s13's sr20det high port desgin is better. Is this really true?

From what I have read, the red tops have more potential for making power. For what the average joe will be doing with these engines though, the difference won't be that big of a deal. The port design will come into play in the 4-500hp range. Another thing to consider is the variable valve timing in the s14 blacktops. This complicates tuning a bit (more so than the s13 redtops).

I've seen s14 blacktops making 450-500hp. From what I've read the low port design is more efficient. It really depends on how much you wanna spend, bottom line

black top, newer motor, less chance of getting a really really old, stagnant motor. You'll thank yourself later when you hear about redtop horror stories.
