View Full Version : NZ Type X Build

So I just realised I haven't actually done a proper build thread on here.

I used to drive this CA18DET piece of trash.

http://mattfresh.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/mmalcolm-117.jpg?w=580

Bought some Type X/Kouki Aero.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/img_0533.jpg?w=580

And just as I was about to finally paint it, this got parted out.

http://csgarage.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/mg_3382.jpg?w=580

So I parted out my green car, snapped up the new rolling shell, along with a few other parts.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/img_2187.jpg?w=580

Got it back in the garage, and put some bride replicas in, and put my aero on.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/img_2995.jpg?w=580

Dropped the subframe, painted it, put some MAX Risers in, installed my Kaaz 2-Way.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/img_3473.jpg?w=580

Realised I was retarded to fuck this car up with fake shit, sold my seats, and bought a Zeta II & Brix combo.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/img_3495.jpg?w=580

Painted things, replaced every joint, and bush everywhere!

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/img_3625.jpg?w=580

Dismantled the front and interior again. Used my room for storage.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/aebd8c8d.jpg

Bought some Kais.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/img_4604.jpg?w=580

While I was there got some other sweet stuff.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/img_4605.jpg?w=580

Bought the first set of PBM new generation arms in the country.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/img_4621.jpg?w=580

Started welding and shaving the bay

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/img_4905.jpg?w=580

Finally kicked my engine build off.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/407143_10150425372726044_685871043_8897171_1453801 751_n.jpg

And this is how it sits right now.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/img_4682.jpg?w=580

So while my block is away getting machined, I'm just cleaning up the last of the bay, welding up all the holes, and filling them, as well as fixing the holes in the battery tray and so on. Then I can paint it, and finally put it all back together!

Thanks man.

Been going crazy cleaning everything up lately, while I wait for my Argon bottle to get filled.

Cleaned & painted front crossmember & steering rack

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/img_4920.jpg?w=580

Removed my airbag light & cleaned my cluster.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/img_4911.jpg?w=580

And cleaned up my numberplate light as it was filthy and needed new bulbs.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/img_4919.jpg?w=580

Also picked up a SR20DE throttle body and removed the fast idle/heating bullshit off it. Then got carried away after I took this photo, and cut the whole bottom off it. Will look good installed.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/img_4928.jpg?w=580

Made some blanking plates for my IACV/AAC too but no pics.

Thanks bro's

I love how your house is filled with parts :D.
What size are the Kais?

I'm running outta space pretty quick hahaha.

Kai's for the front are 17x9 +17, will probably have to space them a bit when camber's all set.

And for the rear 18x9.5 +12.

Got plans for different wheels down the track a bit, but for now these will look good.

Your car looks amazing!!! What are your goals with the CA?

Sold the CA when I parted my old car out. It now resides in a Ford MkII Escort.

Putting a CA in a genuine Type X was gunna be a pretty backward move, so despite my love for CA's I picked up an SR20DET that had run a bearing out of an S14 for a good price.

The short block's currently being machined and assembled by my engine builder friend. Basic rundown is it'll be hot tanked, bored out 0.02"/0.5mm, decked, crank polished, CP pistons installed (0.020" O/S, 9:1 CR), new rod & main bearings.

Then gunna run Tomei Poncams and Metal Headgasket up top, Nismo 550cc Injectors & Z32 AFM tuned on Apexi PFC.

Aiming to run a Tomei ARMS & steampipe manifold eventually but I'll run it in and get some practice in with the factory T28.

So will be running 220kw roughly to start with then retune with the new turbo & should be talking 240-260 safely.

Love what Im seeing here. Similar to what Im planning and doing to mine lol

What are you painting everything with?

Prepping everything, then epoxy black spray cans.

If money were no issue just go a Tomei Genesis kit. Something like $10k? from memory, but all brand new parts and EVERYTHING has been fiddled with!

Money's definately an issue haha. That's why it's taking so damn long hahaha.

Definately makes a huge difference in being able to do it yourself, like all this welding on the bay would have cost someone who couldn't weld, or didn't have a friend, a huge amount, and to be honest if I couldn't weld I wouldn't have bothered.

Anything that I haven't been able to do, I've gone out and bought the tools to do it and got to learning how. Never sprayed before, never used body filler, never welded panel steel, but it's just been a case of learning and getting mates round to lend a hand/knowledge.

Thanks for the kind words everyone, keeps me going when the finish line seems to be getting further and further away.

CR Kai's are good for now. I'm brainstorming an idea for a new set of wheels, but only time will tell.

As for updates, well they'll be held off a while, this thing is taking up a lot of my time lately.

Damn! I'm moving to NZ! An Actual Type-X AND a Stagea? My two top dream cars! Only 2 pages in to the build and I already hate you! GLWB

Is the Stagea the RB25 or 26? Either way awesome car

ill.
01-07-2012, 12:31 PM
Haha. Yeah it's good we get all the stuff that Japan doesn't want anymore haha.

It's RB25DET Auto 4WD. If I find a GTR box for cheap I might manual it, but that's a long way off. It's a pretty awesome cruiser, just needs a bit of attention.

The list of stuff to do includes:

Cambelt, pulleys, water pump.
Plugs, change ATF & diff oils
Install some R33 Turbo brakes I picked up for cheap.
New rear shocks, will probably pick up coilovers.
A/C needs re-gassing
Front CV's need replacing
And both front doors are rusted out under the mirrors, just found replacements for them so I'll be doing those pretty soon.

ill.
01-13-2012, 03:20 PM
I wasn't kidding about the mirror rust.

Picked up some new doors and got it taken care of!

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/c55d01a3.jpg

180's coming along too. Got some carpet for it so now the interior can go back in.

Oh and I sold my Brix and got another Zeta 2. Cool!

ill.
01-14-2012, 04:25 AM
Yeah. Nissan put foam behind the mirrors which holds water and just rusts downward. It's particularly bad on series 1 Stagea's

Update time!

So I've been working hard on the car the last couple of days. Getting what I can done.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/img_4980.jpg?w=580&h=386

After looking at the head that came with my engine, I decided to get a second hand head and swap everything over, as there was some wear in the cam journals that I'd rather not take the risk with.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/img_4978.jpg?w=580&h=386

So I picked up this mint head off an S15 SR20DET, and made up some head stands and got to work. I'll dismantle the old head, and remove the valves, springs and retainers from that and use them on this head as it came with none. I'll be running factory cams and valvetrain for now, as there's no point in getting too wild with cams while running a T28.

Currently the engine is at the machinist's being bored, honed, decked and having the crank balanced, but I'm waiting on my new oil pump to arrive before the block can be decked, So that's holding me up pretty bad.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/img_4981.jpg?w=580&h=386

Scraped/wire wheeled all the seam sealer in the bay and in the tubs away so I can remove any rust starting to form underneath. There were a few small bits, but I've fixed them up nicely and primered it, so this chassis should last a while. I've also wire wheeled back around all the holes that still need to be welded, and trust me there's a few.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/img_4982.jpg?w=580&h=386

Here's the tower minus its seam sealer, now, should I seam weld this thing?

Also picked up a flywheel and ordered a custom clutch setup from the boys at Autoclutch. Shit should work really good. Gotta pick that up in the next few days so my engine builder can balance the crank up.

Hopefully next update will be when the shortblock comes back!

chiboy002
01-22-2012, 11:51 PM
stitch weld would be better, in case you have to replace it then you won't have to cut an entire seam weld off

ill.
01-22-2012, 11:54 PM
Seam welding is the process of spot welding the seams of the car man.

Stitch welding is what you'd do to butt weld two thin metals, intsead of a continuous weld which would warp the metals.

Yeah. Gunna ring up a certifier (the guy who inspects your car for the gay long drawn out process we have to go through to get our cars road legal over here) up tomorrow and ask him about the legality, and also because I wanna do this hahaha.

oooo. keen to see what he says. as i have notched my rad support to tilt my radiator forward be nice to hear what he says about rad support mods

ill.
01-28-2012, 12:36 AM
So my radiator came with some unbranded shitty fans. I knew they wouldn’t work that great so decided I’d get rid of them for a better setup. I need to straighten up a few of the fins, but it should clean up mint.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/img_5009.jpg?w=580&h=386

After someone posted a pic of AU Falcon fans and shroud on a local forum, I thought it looked like it would work pretty good with a bit of trimming, so i picked up a set off a wrecker, cleaned them up and got to trimming them up.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/img_5010.jpg?w=580&h=386

Made two top brackets, and some bottom locators and it mounts pretty solidly.

Came up pretty good after an hour or so with a dremel. Still need to do a bit more trimming so the hoses will fit properly, and get some rubber edging strips to seal the shroud to the radiator.

Also ordered a new oil pump and picked up my clutch the other day, so hopefully the shortblock will be back to me soon and I can finally get this thing going.

chiboy002
01-28-2012, 01:31 AM
removing the upper radiator support doesn't reduce chassis rigidity so with the frame non-seam welded it'll be pretty much the same

why cut out the whole thing though? why not cut the rad portion off and move it back/tilt it back, and have it be bolt on? removing the entire rad support is a pain in the ass, a lot of the spot welds are in shitty positions

ill.
01-28-2012, 03:22 AM
I don't need to change its position, I need to accomodate the intercooler and its piping, so instead of hacking up factory brackets and shit I can just remake everything to run pop ups and a mid mount intercooler.

ill.
02-15-2012, 12:04 AM
Sold the Stagea and bought a Terrano/Pathfinder that I'll use as a cheap tow rig.

In other news!

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/img_5126.jpg?w=580&h=386

Excuse the shit photo, but the bulk of my engine is finally back in my posession. Ordering a timing kit tomorrow, and then the shortblock will be well on its way to being ready for a head.

I've put the ARP studs in, but that's about all for now.

Put carpet and most of the interior back together in the last few days, looking good, just need to get the bay painted, so I can run the body loom. Light was too shit for a good picture of it.

Like I said man. I only just got everything back to me including the final price/invoice.

-Bore 0.5mm oversize $180
-Polish crankshaft $35
-Deck block $75

The work was done by Andrew @ Wade Automotive in Penrose, Auckland.

Prices are in NZD, and don't include GST of 15%

My oil pump drive collar is worn, so have to order one from Nissan Japan. At $23 shipped from Japan, I really can't complain. But the 5-10 day wait for it to ship is gunna give me time to get the head sorted out.

Then the whole engine will be ready to basically go back together.

P.S. Cheers bros for the encouragement. It's coming along nicely!

So thanks to a change in my work schedule I had the day off today and thought I’d get some shit done, and update this thing!

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/img_5164.jpg?w=580&h=386

Started off by picking up a can of High Temp Black paint and going crazy painting all my brackets, mounts, and pulleys for my engine, after I cleaned them up in the parts cleaner the other day. They came out really nice, and should look mint once they’ve cured and I can bolt everything up onto the block.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/img_5172.jpg?w=580&h=386

When I dyed my carpet, I had a bit left over and decided to have a go at getting rid of the ugly grey that the sun visors are in these cars. Did all the clips, and the mirror cover too. So much nicer than that ugly ass grey, and all of about 10 minutes work.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/img_5179.jpg?w=580&h=386

Also put my dash in, but forgot to run my windscreen wiper wiring along the dash bar as I’ll be running them through the interior instead of right around the front of the car. So may have to fuck around feeding like 7 wires through or take the dash back out. Ugh. And I can’t get this god damn bezel to sit right, it’s all wavey in the middle no matter what I do…..

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/img_5195.jpg?w=580&h=386

Also finally got around to cutting my key up to fit in the Snap-On key holder that came over with my wheels from JP. Fuck I’m useless sometimes.

Now to get on with this damn bay!

Seam welding is the process of spot welding the seams of the car man. Stitch welding is what you'd do to butt weld two thin metals, intsead of a continuous weld which would warp the metals.

Not entirely correct; the factory does what's called electric resistance spot/seam welding. Seam welding, when not performed with a ERW machine, is when two materials, despite their thickness, are butted together and the seam is welded. That weld can be stitched or continuous. Technically that weld area could be classified as a lap joint or fillet.

I would not recommend continuous weld on an S-chassis anywhere.

I love what you're doing though; I've always been a sucker for the type-X in Midnight Purple. Keep the pictures coming.

Haha. It gets pretty crowded in here when I want to work on another car or anything. But for working on one car it's good. I'm still super messy, but every time I can't find something I go on a rage clean and fix everything.

Last couple of days I've been bolting all the mounts back on and all that, as well as alternator and figuring out how I'll low mount my P/S pump. So far so good. Just need to buy a sump, water pump and slap this head together.

This company makes a bracket that allows you to relocate and lower your PS pump:

Been chipping away at this POS a bit lately.

Engine is mostly together. Started off like this.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/0d568f3a.jpg

And a couple hours later. I had it looking like this.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/a2eeaa68.jpg

Then I realised cars suck, and snowboarding rules, so bought these.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/b88cef19.jpg

Now I'm waiting on a couple of small things before I can finish the engine up and drop it off the stand.

But while I wait for those bits, I'm gunna crack into this engine bay on my next lot of days off and get it ready for paint.

I did some engine work today. It was fun. Manifold is now on. Got rid of throttle heating, and inline oil cooler, so slimmed it down under there OK.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/b1968feb.jpg

Just letting the paint on my throttle body dry as I type this. Now to go at my rocker cover with a dremel so it fits over the rocker arm stoppers. Then paint that tomorrow hopefully.

Then I'll take it off the stand and whack the clutch on, and maybe go pick up a gearbox?

Rocker cover needs a baffle ground out. There's a picture of it in the Greddy instructions, so must be a common thing. Maybe just for S14/15?

Almost all the welding has finally been done on the car and I'm just getting through all the filler work. I just need to make plates for 3 more holes and then it'll be just about ready for paint!

When I dyed my carpet, I had a bit left over and decided to have a go at getting rid of the ugly grey that the sun visors are in these cars. Did all the clips, and the mirror cover too.

Superb Build Thread mate, a real inspiration and I'm loving your attention to detail. Those sun visors look brilliant, as if they came from the factory that colour. Can I ask what dye (brand etc) you used to colour them, as I'd love to get rid of all the ugly grey from my interior and replace it with sexy black like you've got :hsdance:

Yo dude. I used VHT Vinyl dye in Matt Black. Available EVERYWHERE. Use Matt black as it gives a factory sort of semi gloss look. The gloss looks way too shiny, and look like crap

i hope you plan on painting that valvecover lol

Yeah I definately plan on doing that haha. But no point in doing it until the engine's in, as more than likely it'll end up getting all scratched up, and I'm also gunna change the the bolts and washers and stuff, so just going to leave it as it is for now, save fucking everything up haha.

Fuck haven't updated anything in ages. Have sort of fallen off the radar a bit.

Been working a ton lately, so haven't had a heaps of time for the car, but have been slowly chipping away whenever I can.

Bought a Takata harness of a mate, and threw that in.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/27eb4db8.jpg

Welding up this last piece of steel tonight, doing some final filler work, then it goes off to paint late this week hopefully, then start putting it back together!

Changed my mind a million times on how I want to wire, and plumb it, but have decided to go XRP fittings and lines, for catch can, oil cooler, and P/S.

I'll leave the fuel lines rubber for now, just to get it running, as I'll be upgrading the whole fuel system when I start chasing more power a bit later on.

I've also decided to use a wire in, Link G4 Storm ECU, they're damn good computers, and will run everything I need.

Hopefully will have some updates, and shots from my SLR once the car's back from paint, and starts getting reassembled!

Finally this thing's ready for paint.

Kinda wanted to paint it without the subframe and that underneath, but it was gunna be near impossible to get it to the painters, as I don't know anybody with a completely flatdeck trailer available.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/3a0297c8.jpg

So I bolted all the rolling gear in loosely today. So stoked. Most of it will be coming back out, to get either painted, lengthened, re-greased or re-bushed when the engine's in, but that's still a bit away, so for now it'll do.

While I was there, I put the column back in, and finally put the Nardi in, that I bought for it last year hahaha.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/a672d1b5.jpg

Thanks bro's.

Boom, first proper update in a very long time!

Well it’s been a damn long time since I updated this, but there hasn’t really been any progress until now, so here goes.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/img_5505.jpg?w=580&h=386

So late last week I finally got the engine bay to a point where I was happy to send it away for paint. So I dropped the car off at Custom Ride Body Works, and 24 hours later the car was back on the trailer on its way home, with an amazing new coat of paint. Cannot thank those dudes enough!

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/img_5509.jpg?w=580&h=386

So once it was back in the garage, I got to work reinstalling the brake booster and cylinders. While I was there I bent up two new hardlines to the front brakes. I did this because I’ve welded up the original holes in the sheetmetal that the brake lines used to go through. I’m now running them through the holes for the ABS sender so there’s no chance of them getting rubbed through at full lock, so the OEM lines were about 4 inches too short.

I also wanted to hide the line to the passengers side, so I bent up a new one that runs along the crossmember, next to the power steering lines. Once the turbo’s in, and piping’s in you’ll barely be able to see it.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/img_5517.jpg?w=580&h=386

I threw the radiator in, just to see how everything lined up, and how much space there is between the pulleys and the electric fans. Because it’s an S14 radiator, I’ll have to make up some new brackets as the mounting boss is different. It’s leaning against the waterneck here.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/img_5511.jpg?w=580&h=386

With all the rolling gear in and torqued up, I decided it was a good time to throw the steering column in, and finally put my Nardi on the car. I’ve been using it in my daily driver for the past 6 months! Also picked up a Takata harness off a friend of mine. Once all the wiring’s been done, I’ll put the last few plastic panels back on, and it’ll look like a real car again!

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/img_5515.jpg?w=580&h=386

And this is my garage at the moment. Painting things hanging off the garage door, and assembling as much as I can with all the parts I have stocked up, while I save some money for my ECU!

badfish816
08-05-2012, 01:15 AM
damn nice build. looks clean. but arent you worried about the over spray from the hanging parts getting on your clean paint? i would be nervous as hell.

ill.
08-05-2012, 01:28 AM
Yeah man. I throw a blanket over the car whenever I spray anything in the garage. I would be mega pissed off if I got overspray on anything.

I'd just taken it off in that photo so I could keep working between coats.

08-05-2012, 02:43 AM
Thanks man! Yeah I'm really liking the way it's all coming together so far. Wheels will eventually be changed up, and I have my eye on some spares for sale locally for when i get it running, but money's going elsewhere at the moment, just making do with what I have haha.

badfish816
08-05-2012, 08:41 AM

Haha thanks guys. Put most of the front on today. Will finish off & take pictures tomorrow. Will have everything but the hood & front bumper on, as it'll only have to come back off again when the intercooler gets mounted, that and the bonnet will probably be the last things to go on.

Tomorrow I'll hopefully torque up all the front suspension now it's at ride height, install my callipers, & maybe start mounting the fusebox/relays & start running wires for the headlights/motors.

I'll be able to do most of it, but will get my auto sparky friend to lend a hand when it comes to power distribution & hooking up the start/charge wires.

Now it's all there I can slowly start the tedious job of plumbing it all up. Throttle and clutch all work now, after fucking around changing to an S14 cable.

Working nights this week, so should give me some time to place everything how I want it and start wiring, now everything's all set up at the new place.

So after finally moving house, I’ve dived back into getting this thing done!

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/img_5622.jpg?w=1014

Damn, it could do with a clean.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_5607.jpg

So this is how it sits at the moment. All ready to be plumbed and wired up.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/img_5623.jpg?w=1014

So today I installed my Tomei Fuel Pressure Regulator, and plumbed it up, bar the connection to the fuel rail, as I haven’t ordered any hoses or fittings yet. Looks ok there, not super happy with it, but it’ll do for now at least.

http://illsquad.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/img_5630.jpg?w=1014

I also flared the ends of my new brake hardlines, and hooked them up to my braided lines to the calipers. All that’s left to do on this side of things is to make up a mount for the lines, so they’re not floating around like they are at the moment.

Oh and the reason the suspension is all dirty, is because it’ll all be coming out to extend the lower control arms, and modify the knuckles.

I've also installed a washer system, due to gay WOF rules, but instead of drilling holes in my bonnet, I decided to do this

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_5602.jpg

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_5634.jpg

Next up is to mount my GREX filter block, and start plumbing everything up. I've also got some new, straighter caster arm brackets to chop up and brace too.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_5645.jpg

And here’s my dog Sam enjoying some of this amazing weather we’re having today!

It almost looks like a car again! But man is it filthy!

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_5659.jpg

There's all sorts of shit on the paint after lying around for almost two years, so the whole car will be getting cut and polished once it's all up and running, and a few holes get filled and smoothed.

Now I'm waiting on my Summit Racing order to get the power steering system all ready to rock, then off to get Adam to do some bracing next weekend, then i'll take it straight to Sinco for the turbo setup to go on.

And here's Sam sleeping again!

The exhaust is typical 2.5" twin outlets sticking a few inches out from the bumper, the system resonators and a flexi under the car, and all sits above the chassis rail, bar the flexi, which is already showing signs of wear just from going into my garage haha.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_5679.jpg

Super happy now it looks like a car again!

Hahaha. Thanks mate.

There are still a lot of changes I'd like to make to the car before I'll be ultimately happy with it. But for now I'm purely focusing on getting it running, tuned and legal for NZ roads before summer's over.

Slowly over the next few months I'll get it all finished and ready to strap to the dyno.

Then over next winter do the next round of modifications to it. Nothing too crazy, just a few more parts/braces, maybe add some Poncams or something, a sliding rail for the passengers seat might be nice, so I can actually see around the passenger, paint the rear interior etc.

Haha thanks dudes.

This thing hasn't actually been touched since my last post. Wiring will start as soon as I buy an ECU, and then it can finally run!

The turbo is a 2871R 0.64A/R, T2 flanged, bolt on style.

LovetoSlide
11-26-2012, 07:08 PM
Can't wait to see the progress. Earlier in your thread you mentioned you wanted to go with the Tomei ARMS, have you heard any positive things about this turbo? I can't find any reliable information.

ill.
11-30-2012, 11:50 AM
A friend of mine here is making 280kW at the rear hubs with the smaller of the two ARMS turbo's.

I was always going to get one, but this 2871R came up too cheap to pass up.

If another friend, with the same turbo's recent dyno chart is anything to go off it will be good for similar, if not more power with my engine setup.

Recently ordered a couple more things to keep the build going. Pondering whether or not to sell my CR Kai's while I wait for my Blitz 03's to arrive to keep everything moving along, but then in a couple of months time I'll have no wheels to swap out at track days, so will probably just keep them.

ill.

So I rolled it out of the garage to give it a wash before I put it back inside, up on stands, and sold the CR Kai's.

Fusebox is in glovebox, all lights and shit like blower, radio etc work, just need to wire fuel pump, and it'll be ready to go to the tuners wiring wise.

Also picked up a fancy new battery charger, so I can just plug it in to keep it topped up while the car sits for long periods. With that sorted, I can try getting oil pressure.

Not much more to buy aside from G4, somehow keep getting distracted by other shit though.

Bit of shit happening lately.

Doing a bunch of stuff on a friends 2JZ powered IS300/Altezza at the moment, which is really distracting me.

Picked up a 350Z gearbox to bolt in once the S14 one explodes.

On a brighter note. It's ready to be dropped off for a tune next week!

ill.
07-16-2013, 08:06 PM
So, finally got the time to sit down and write a post today, while ordering the last few little things to finish the car off before tune. Been a very long time.

So in preparation for a tune, I needed a catch can, so I borrowed a trailer, and loaded the car up. Falcon tows pretty good, despite the tow hitch being just about on the ground haha.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zps0aeeab98.jpg

Dropped it off to SMS industries, and within 24 hours I had a custom catch can, nestled into the corner of the engine bay, all ready to go. Couldn't be happier with his work.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6376_zps95a278d5.jpg

Brought it home, rolled it off the trailer and whipped up some lines, and now it's just waiting on a breather filter to come in, and it'll be ready to go!

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6381_zps3aa674d7.jpg

Interior's all complete.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6385_zps5d726ae9.jpg

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6388_zpse12175f5.jpg

I've also had a couple of people interested in how I did the fusebox relocation, so here it is. It's not the tidiest way to run all the wiring, but I'm still not 100% that I've done a couple things right, so will more than likely be getting fixed at a later date.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6394_zps6020459a.jpg

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6396_zpsdc903b53.jpg

Also picked this up, for when the S14 gearbox goes bang, 350Z 6 speed. Note the trademark photo of Sam the wiener.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6427_zps6d0d1f31.jpg

And this is the thing that has been taking up the bulk of my time lately, just finishing a couple of things off for a mate atm, then ready to wire, once my car's out of my hair. 2JZ single turbo powered Altezza will be a fuckload of fun.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_6417_zps74a99d78.jpg

Well, this is how the car sits now, 95% complete, just waiting on the last few little things for it to be 100% ready to tune next week.

So lots has happened over the last few weeks.

Starting off with the car getting the Link G4 ECU wired up all nice. And then strapped to the dyno.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zps3684f7da.jpg

For a nice easy run in tune, we spun it up to 5000rpm and got 185kw/248hp atw on just 10psi.

While that was away being done, I got these shitty old things polished up.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zps26b75585.jpg

Then I was ordered to do a bunch of milage on the motor, so off I went around the streets, and to our local ractrack, about 45 minutes drive away.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zps75411599.jpg

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zps64d68294.jpg

Car felt good, after sorting out a few teething issues, and getting it aligned.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zps9d9dcb15.jpg

Did another track day.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zps1a959f02.jpg

And a bunch more street driving, the looks you get are hilarious!

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/null_zpsa391c31c.jpg

And now it's tucked away again, awaiting some money for cams and a retune.

Haha hey bro. Nah, no power/money/am working.

Will bring it out to a drift day or two once I've retuned.

Probably gunna go for some Tomei Poncams, and will probably throw in some stiffer valve springs while I'm at it. Will suit the little turbo I have on now, and the next turbo I've got lined up.

Now I'm just waiting on my shifter, and adapter plate to turn up, and a few OEM Nissan Z33 clutch parts, then it's all ready to go back in the car ready to make a new crossmember and driveshaft.

Now that's an update! Are you planning to get a tune done soon now that you added some head bits, and freshened things up?

Will be getting booked in for a retune the moment it's complete haha. Don't see any more engine work required any time soon, so will leave it at that and see what numbers it pulls.

When my adapter plate and shifter arrived, I cracked into it. Bolting it all together the same night, making sure the clutch setup worked etc.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140307_114232_zpssv2erci3.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140307_114232_zpssv2erci3.jpg.html)

Knocked up a crossmember to suit the new gearbox.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/20140308_202350_zpsdoenxurp.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140308_202350_zpsdoenxurp.jpg.html)

And made up a shifter bracket in a similar fashion.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/20140310_095423_zpstzcak9uh.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140310_095423_zpstzcak9uh.jpg.html)

Cut the tunnel slightly, sealed it off from fumes, and spun up a small extension for the shifter itself, to bring it up a bit higher. The throw is really nice now.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140310_192517_zps9sr46ghq.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140310_192517_zps9sr46ghq.jpg.html)

Threw the rest of the engine bay back together, much the same as it was, aside from a bit of tidying up, and rewiring of the charge circuit, and vacuum/boost feeds.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140313_113801_zpsyjczabiz.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140313_113801_zpsyjczabiz.jpg.html)

Got a custom 1-Piece driveshaft made up with the Z33 yoke.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/20140321_171944_zpsmje2boh1.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140321_171944_zpsmje2boh1.jpg.html)

Then took it for a drive and realised the box sat retardedly low, so I raised the car 6mm in the rear, and 12mm in the front, something I'd been meaning to do since I entered a car show a few months back. The car was just retarded at that height. My sump bash plate was half worn through after about 200km of driving.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/20140322_135735_zpsuhng2ngo.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140322_135735_zpsuhng2ngo.jpg.html)

Visually you can barely tell the difference, but to drive, the difference is night and day. So good.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/20140322_135757_zpsxf54uuuf.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140322_135757_zpsxf54uuuf.jpg.html)

Tune is booked in for next Friday, so will see how she goes when we feed it 20psi or so of boost and 7800rpm

Love this build. Such a good and complete process.

Pretty cool that you went Z33 box. Did you run into any problems?

Haha thanks man.

Biggest issue was the lack of information on what exactly you needed to do. George from Maverick Motorsports was super helpful about it all.

It's probably not a conversion you really want to do unless you can weld, or can afford to take it to a shop to get done. There's probably about 20 hours worth of fab work in that shifter bracket, and crossmember. There are other ways of doing it, like a Mazworx CNC bracket, or getting George to do it, but it's fun doing this kind of shit yourself IMO.

Last night we replaced the flex join in the exhaust, as it was a little worse for wear after 5000km's of abuse.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_20140324_184134_zpsnnvqugva.jpg (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/illsquaddrift/media/IMG_20140324_184134_zpsnnvqugva.jpg.html)

Now it's good as new, and sounding much better without the exhaust leak.

Long time no update, where do I start?

Did some street driving and picked up some 555 Knuckle's.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/IMG_1480342288150_zpsc1aa706a.jpeg

Did some more street driving and ended up with my sump guard looking like this.

Got pulled over and the car was ordered off the road. So did some of this.

Swapped my Zeta 2 & Brix combo for an Artis 2 & Zeta 2 Pro model.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140503_195351_zps88l15gb5.jpg

Got worried I was gunna break axles so put a GTR rear end in.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/10447053_10152071800566044_7398808805909001285_n_z ps19047a91.jpg

Did some more driving and got a mini feature in a magazine I've been reading since I was a kid which was pretty cool.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/1545155_876549819022848_2469561863166310026_n_zpsc e7816cf.jpg

Changed turbo setup to a 2876R, had that shit out on the dyno after 3 pulls so fronted up and bought a brand new one off the shelf.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/10397824_10152316984906044_8316602541956591798_n_z psb9739874.jpg

Ditched VCT after getting fed up with it's constant issues.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/10639550_10152319704876044_366418889098495755_n_zp sbeca5cde.jpg

Bolted it back up to the dyno 2 days later & changed fuels to E85 from 98 octane pump gas.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z384/illsquaddrift/10734220_1562663753956671_7159232606983339517_n_zp s491b5923.jpg

The result? 306kw at the wheels on 17psi. This photo was taken after my first thrash down the straight. Stoked.

Now to learn to drive it better!

Cool update! I've always enjoyed your work.
I did not know you could weld all proper like.

Why was the car ordered off the road?
I though it was only Oz that was very strict in those regards.

ill.
10-26-2014, 02:01 AM
Thanks lads.

I don't do the welding, my buddy/team mate does all out welding.

Our rules are getting stricter, my car had no certification to be on the road and I got away with it for 9 months of pretty regular driving.

That's life. Made the decision to make it a track car that little bit easier.
