View Full Version : modified turbo elbow too restrictive? Advise needed

Im almost done with my rb25 s14. My turbo elbow was one of my problems, as most of u know this is a common problem w rb25 swaps. I decided to do the grinding it trick but it didnt work and getting an aftermarket one that works without having to bang it on the side is kinda overpriced, but if needed i'll have to get it down the road. So i went ahead and removed it to see if i could grind it down a bit more just to find out i had already made a tiny hole on it so i just decided to modify it all the way. This is my result:

do u guys think this could cause a problem being too restrictive? Make me loose power or cause some overheating issues? Please let me know what u think. Thanks

It being stock is restrictive enough, look around in the For Sale Section for a SYKO RB elbow

what mounts are you using? mine just barely rubbed the steering column and bolted up. took an angle grinder and clearanced it very slighty and it worked with no problems so im curious what your set up it

custom made, look in my build thread. So u guys think this could cause problems?

IMO this is what i see happening. the cutout you made will cause significant back pressure on the turbine due to its close proximity to the turbine itself. more back pressure will cause more heat on the hot side of the turbo reducing performance and longevity. With a stock rb25 turbo with cermaic turbine, i could very well see it failing fairly quickly especially is boost is raise over 7psi. just the way i see it. im no engineer but it makes sense to me.

Back pressure, exactly. That's one of my concerns. I will be runnin stock psi all day. I got a smic too which is pretty restrictive if u ask me....im just looking to make stock hp at first and the maybe upgrade after i learn more about it.

u could try using ofset rack bushings and adjust ur alignment that should give u 1/4 to 1/2 in and if ur trying to do everything in house u could cut and twist ur down pipe a tad and between the 2 u should be able to get the clearance u need also is ur engine mounted at its natural slant or streight up and down? that would cause some clearance issues as well

at its natural slant i believe, centered the damper and leveled the bottom of the oil pan as parallel as possible to the crossmember.
I ended up purchasing a amperformance elbow/downpipe piece, hopefully receive it by the end of this week or next week and hopefully it clears it. Thanks for all the input fellas.
