Right now the insurance on my 1995 240sx is $108 a month.
I may be trading for a 1994 bmw 530i. I'm thinking my rates may go down seeing as how it's not considered a sports car like the 240, and is a 4 door.

Thoughts?

a 240 is considered a family car for some reason the bmw will be higher cuse of the name

Yup, family car. That back seat that I just say "it's for decoration" allows it to be considered a family car instead of a roadster/coupe.

Learn something new everyday.

So the e34 would have a higher priced insurance. I wonder how much more?

Wow I did not know that. I think some company's offer a discount for having automatic seat belts.

Get quotes from companies. Shop around. It might be the opposite situation with other companies.

on a principle of safety? i would think the opposite. on the principle of you will always where a seat belt, i could see.

with automatic seat belts, i know with me, i almost always forget to buckle the lap belt making all the force go to your rib cage. eh, i was assuming thats why they stopped using them. cool beans.

Just call up your insurance agent and get a quote. That is their job. There are way too many factors to consider to even try to guess (value, safety, cost to repair, frequency of accidents, etc. etc. etc.).

(Im an insurance agent).

this^^, no need for a thread with a topic that no one can give you an accurate answer because of too many personal factors that impact it, just call a few companies and find out yourself

Hey, I'm 8'2"... do you think I can fit in a S14 with sunroof if I wear thin jeans and I have a faux hawk?

i'm guessing bare bones insurance? i've got full coverage and i'm at around $100-$130/month. learned my lesson after i was in a hit and run accident.

but seriously 99% of us aren't insurance agents-put in the effort to call around and do some research; there are a bunch of variables that will affect your rate. and if you opt for the cheapest policy pray to god you don't get in a wreck or get hurt because you won't get covered for shit.

This, I got a discount cause my S14 was considered a family car lol, insurance on a bimmer will be higher because like this dude said of the name and because it is also a luxury car....

Insurance is just one of those things that is impossible to guess and trivial to compare prices between two entirely different situations. There are hundreds of factors that go into a rate.

The Applicant - Credit Score, Insurance Score, Driving Record, age, sex, maritual status, etc.
The Vehicles - Safety, Accident Frequency, Options, Cost to Repair, etc.
The Coverages - Liability Limits, Medical Payments, Full/Partial Coverage, Deductibles, Towing/Roadside Assistance, etc.
The Discounts - Multi-car, Multi-policy, Homeowners, Garaging Zipcode, Claim Free, etc.

To even try to guess on any one of those factors is a waste of your time. Yeah, there are general assumptions you can make that are usually accurate, but I do this all day every day and am often very wrong when I attempt to guess on rates. Thats why I dont.

If anybody in the midwest has specific insurance questions or would like to talk to a professional, shoot me a PM and I am more than willing to help you out.

just throwing this out there, i had an 05 is300 and picked up a 07 3series. the bmw was cheaper monthly. it's not necessarily more just because of the name.

Well you had a lexus... so the insurance on those could be pricey(not saying it is, cuz i know a couple ppl with 02 is300 but its a possibility)... a bunch of factors. Not necessarily the name, but the price to repair those cars are more expensive than a nissan, honda, or toyota (even tho lexus is a branch of toyota). Plus it depends on age sex history and age of vehicle and what coverage you want

$47/m for my 95 :P

My first three months of insurance on my 240 was $7.

:snoop::snoop::snoop:

But anyways, turns out it'll be the exact same as what I pay now, $108/month

Do this. Full coverage on my 240 was 160 bucks when I was 17. I'm 20 now and have a is300 and the is is 120! Didn't make any sense to me. Shop around I did for a month.

Where the fuck did you hear that from? Its a sports coupe, cheaper than a sports car due to the backseat. Thats what makes a 350Z insurance more than a G35 coupe.

Yeah, dumb question. Lol. Insurance agency I use was closed at the moment when I posted this. Just wanted a rounded guess on what people thought.
Turns out it'll be the exact same price. $108 a month.

Also, you guys should check this out. Even just a read would be helpful!

I think you’ll definitely be able to get a lower auto insurance quote (http://hartfordauto.thehartford.com/auto-insurance-quote.shtml) now. Due to the demographic of people that tend to buy sports-cars, insurance providers will slap a high premium on you. Sports-car drivers tend to speed and have money to throw around so they engage in reckless behavior, or that’s the presumption at least.

I imagine it won't change much at all.

I went from a '03 BMW 540i (6 speed, M-Sport, nice car, just super unreliable past 100k miles) to an '06 Acura RSX Type S. My insurance dropped a small amount (around $4-6/month or so).

My S13 is quite a bit less than $20/month to insure as a "pleasure vehicle" with high liability limits and uninsured motorist (a must in TX).
