Sup dudes. I'm finally getting around to starting this build thread after almost a year of building the car, better late than never.

My goal with this project was to try to build the cleanest s13 that i possibly could, nothing extreme, I just wanted it to be almost like " new ". With my old 92' SE Hb I ran into a few problems with body damage, and not having the time or ability to get that fixed due to it being my daily driver, I decided to go for a whole new chassis.

Because of the fact that my whole family has been car enthusiasts for as long as i can remember this build has been a family effort of sorts. My father Jay, and my grandfather Gary have been helping me out with this thing for the past year tremendously, I can't possibly thank them enough. It's pretty neat that I can say that about a silly 240 build of mine.

Some of you may already be familiar with my ol' Goldie hatch.

Sad to say I had to begin reaming it of its parts for the new chassis after working so hard to get it the way it was, but I will still be driving it nonetheless.

Onto the new chassis:
While i was on the lookout for a new car to start with, my father ran across another gold hatch, what a coincidence. It was a 93' and was also an SE; right down the road from his house, and it was for sale. He said it was the cleanest completely stock s13 he had seen in a while. The car had two owners it's whole life. The current owner at the time had owned it since 1995. So of course i jumped on it and bought it a few hours later.
Here it is the day of purchase:

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6522.sized.jpg
Drove the car once completely stock, just because. ran into some small electrical problems and addressed them right away before i started stripping it down.

Started off day one pulling the front end, doors and hatch off of the car.
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6560.sized.jpg
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6561.sized.jpg

Then went the interior.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6569.jpg
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6568.jpg

All of the doo doo brown interior would be either replaced or painted to be black and grey.

The interior of the car was sprayed with Lizard skin for sound deadening. I was skeptical about it at first, but it turned out okay apart from the messy overspray :eek3:

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6577.sized.jpg
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6582.sized.jpg

Then came some minor body work, I wanted to have it as smooth as i could before it went to the painter to try to make it move as quickly as possible, since I am unfortunately a very impatient person. Hah.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6580.jpg

Pulled the grimey KA out, it wasn't quite as " Clean " as the rest of the car, Then worked on stripping down the KA and feverishly cleaning the bay.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_7005.jpg

Put the car up on the lift where it would sit for a while, and dropped the front crossmember and rear subframe.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_7006.jpg

Finally, the bay was prepped and ready for paint. unfortunately i couldn't find photos of it in primer.
I wanted the color for the car to be something that was a little different, I spotted some photos from japan for some inspiration, and went for it.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0015_001.jpg

The color is a bit more green than what it looks like in the photo. Thats all I'm posting tonight. bare with me on the photos, they are scattered everywhere on different computers.

Wow! I was not expecting so many replies already. Thanks for all the appreciation guys!
Finally I get to sit down and do some more posting.

As you may have noticed in the last photo, When i dropped the front crossmember and rear subframe I applied some de greaser and went to town cleaning on them.

After the thorough cleaning the spindles, suspension arms, diff, axles Etc.. were pulled off to be refinished with gloss black paint, and have all the bushing replaced with brand new energy bushings!

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_0841.jpg

Please excuse the very poor photos guys, I did not have my Nikon around for a lot of this build, I will dig up as much as I can.

I also purchased a " new " Oe replacement rack, Oe replacement lower control arms, and Ichiba 5 lug hubs.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_0936.jpg

Brand new OEM rear lower control arms.
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_0911.jpg

Energy suspension bushings in the spindles with fresh coat of gloss black.
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_0914.jpg

Also here is the Underside of the chassis with a fresh coat of lizard skin after pressure washing the underside. That was a giant mess, and pain in the ass. especially in cold weather.. huge thanks to Gramps for helping me out with that.
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0025_001.jpg

I had my buddy Mike cut and weld up some of the seams in the fender wells, cut that razor sharp seam at the top of the fender, and welded that before all the coating was applied.

That gold hatch at the top of the page (your previous car or whatever) is one of the cleanest hatchbacks I've ever seen. If that is any indication of what this car could become, I cannot wait to see more.

Also, all your parts look really sexy cleaned up. Makes me wish I had another car to daily so I could take mine apart and clean it up nice like yours haha

Onto the rear subframe and suspension of the car..
Bolted up all of the suspension arms, spindles, Diff, Axles, and Hubs and then re-installed the subframe to the chassis.

The sway bar was put back on after this photo was taken with brand new end links and energy bushings in them.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0024.jpg

As for the suspension arms I decided to go with ISIS, I know there is a ton of criticism on the brand, but I have ran these arms on my DD for a while now with no problems. This car is NOT a race car, I'm not trying to save weight or anything like that. That being said, I see no problem with running these arms on it aside from Heim joint noise, which could be replaced with aurora heim joints. If anything happens to them i know I have a great warranty on them.

For the Coil overs, I threw some old ISIS coil overs on the chassis for Mock up so that the car could be rollable until I remove the BC Racing BR coil overs off of my other car and install them on this one.

The BC racing BR's the day I bought them.
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0005_003.jpg
Front suspension, Rack, Hubs, Brake lines and brakes installed.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0001_005.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0062_001.jpg

I went with Agency power brake lines, and some re-manufactured Z32 30mm Calipers up front. The rotors I attempted to use were 13" Brembo's but the bracket I purchased ended making the caliper too far away from the rotor. I went ahead and put the stock z32 rotors back on until I could find a solution to the problem.

Re-installed some goods into the engine bay, repainted the brake booster so it could look fresh again and cleaned up the grime on the brake/clutch lines. Also pulled the harness back up obviously.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0057_001.jpg

As you may have noticed in the other photo, the gas tank was dropped. It was caved in pretty bad, and It was looking like I wasn't going to be able to replace it...
So i ended up buying a brand new OEM gas tank, Lol.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0063.jpg
http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0064_001.jpg

I also ran across a BRAND NEW OEM sunroof, The sunroof whistle has always peeved me... especially when I could hear it over my radio at highway speed.
I attempted to just replace the rubber on my old sunroof with an OEM seal, but it fit terribly. I think that they are vulcanized to the glass at the factory and I had no way of doing this, so I seized the opportunity and picked up the new sunroof.

I love it.

Yep, The sunroof came directly from Nissan, And as my Father said (PSI240SX) was apparently the last one.

Back on track to the body work..

I wanted to keep the stock body, and to fit the wheels I was planning on buying I would need to pull the fenders. Since I pulled the fenders on my old car, and I knew how the old battles fit compared to how the new wheels would fit by calculating the width/offset I brought out the eastwood fender roller and very carefully pulled the fenders.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0019_001.jpg

Took all of those silly stripes off of the doors, and started sanding.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0015_002.jpg

Taped off the area where the stock hood insulator went and sprayed some lizard skin on that too.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0026_001.jpg

Then put on some coats of paint.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0038.jpg

After filling the door with sound deadening, laid some paint on the jambs

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0001_006.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0004_004.jpg

Took some time to test the color out on a fender that was not being used on the car.
This is just single stage paint, the car will be painted in a booth with two stage.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0020_001.jpg

Finally, the chassis was back on the ground again.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0002_003.jpg

As for the hatch, the spoiler was already removed on it. The only thing we had to weld and smooth out was the window wiper hole. When the car goes to the painter it will have the third brake light and rear markers welded up!

Also as I forgot to mention previously we welded and smoothed out the antenna hole.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0002_004.jpg

Here is another random shot of the lizard skin inside the car.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0005_004.jpg

Laid some primer on the chassis and sent it off to have the front end put on a frame machine to see if it was straight, and to line up the front bumper and fenders as perfect as possible.

Dynamat, covered the entire inside of the door. If you tap it sounds like its solid. I did that on my gold car and it worked great for road noise.

I'm enjoying seeing the stages of your build come along. What led you to use Lizard Skin over other sound deadening products? Also, why didn't you spray it inside of the doors? Seems like that would have been easier than trying to get the Dynamat laid down. I wish now I would have used a spray liner in my wife's car. Installing all of that dynamat extreme was a pain.

Glad to hear man. The reason I used the lizard skin in the interior over the dynamat is because it is much easier to cover that much space with it, its a very thin coat, and it's much less expensive than trying to cover the whole car with dynamat. The inside of the door had a coat of lizard skin and dynamat, just to try to get it as quiet as possible.
Yeah, its definitely annoying.

Since I haven't posted anything about the motor, here we go.
For the motor I decided to stay with the Ka, I didn't wanna deal with getting a junk motor from an importer. The main reason is that I just like Ka Turbo, Torque is close to the same as horsepower yada yada.. It's just my opinion.

Unfortunately I don't have as many photos as I would like to have with the motor build stuff, but this will suffice.

Just as the chassis was, the motor and tranny went through a very thorough cleaning, then stripped down and completely rebuilt.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_6590.jpg

After completely taking it down to the block, the crank, and head were sent to the machine shop. Polish/Bore Etc..

I just decided to a mild build on the motor, nothing ridiculous. I wanted the motor to be fun and somewhat reliable.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0009_001.jpg

After it got back from the machine shop I gave the block a fresh coat of gloss black.

My engine builder mike dealt with assembling all the internals of the motor.
Since I don't plan on going much over the 300 horsepower range I kept stock rods, now I regret this and wish I would have bought some Eagle rods just in case, oh well :smash: Went with some JE pistons, Clevite bearings, Bc valve springs and retainers, Cometic Head gasket, FiveO 550cc Injectors, Vibrant oil drain kit with AN fittings, ISIS Turbo manifold, ISIS 3871, ISIS O2 housing, OEM T2 Gasket, OEM 5 Bolt gasket, brand new timing chain and guides, Brand new OEM oil pump, Water pump, lower water neck, Valve cover gasket, Alternator, Starter, SPEC Stage 3 Plus clutch, RS ENTHALPY rom tune.. much more I've missed.

onto the photos.

I'm not a big KA guy, but that motor looks super fresh! What's your first impression of the ISIS turbo?

To each their own, haha. Thanks Matt!
First impressions right off, the quality of the turbo is definitely decent for the price. casting isn't flashy or anything but that is nothing of importance anyways. Oil feed inlet and drain look fine, the turbine wheel spins smooth for a journal bearing. Thing is, I've witnessed many of these turbos work very well on friends cars with no problems whatsoever, they spool quickly, and I know if anything happens to this turbo I have a great warranty on it. There will be no problem with sending the core back and receiving a brand new replacement.

BUT, I do plan on going to a Garrett if i start having problems. I enjoy driving my car.

Back to the body for a bit.

As you've probably noticed on my old gold car, I had almost completed my OEM 180sx Kouki Aero, but due to QP damage i couldn't ever have my rear valences on.
This car would get all of the OEM kouki aero from that car.

Mocked up the side skirts and drilled all the holes out so that It could be mounted as it was from the factory, along with the front speed panels and spoiler.

I had a professional remove the rear quarter windows for paint sake.

Random shot of the build and my fathers LS1 Fd.

Side skirts/speed panels mocked up:

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0013.jpg

Rear valences chilling.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0004_002.jpg

Drilled the holes for the rear spoiler.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0001_004.jpg

After all the body panels were mocked up and ready for paint we continued to button up the engine bay and get it 100% driveable before it was sent off to paint.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0008_003.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0009_002.jpg

Started on the intercooler piping, and got a little crazy with my MAF and air filter placement. I'm worried about driving in the rain, but they will be isolated from the wheel with fender liner.

Then I decided against using the OEM clutch fan, and purchased a SPAL fan controller and two 12" fans.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_1315.jpg

Also had Mike weld a bracket to the oil catch tank so it could be bolted to the radiator fan shroud. Did a small wire tuck also, and went nuts with AN fittings and braided lines.

^oh, you doubled it up inside of the door. Cool, yeah, spray in liner would be so much easier and provide better overall coverage than the sheets of dynamat. Look forward to seeing more updates.

Sup Nick! haha.

After we got the motor running and the car completely rolling, it was ready to leave for paint.

The exhaust was also installed, unfortunately I don't have any photos of that. Mike did a lot of work to get as much clearance as possible, he also extended an SR downpipe so it would clear the floor board, and relocated the O2 bung for easy access.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0001_002.jpg

I picked up some MINT Aero marker electric mirrors from va240dude

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_1277.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_1276.jpg

After waiting for three months, my wheels came in!
I spent a lot of time deciding on sizes and offset. Didn't want something that would be way too aggressive, I went with 18x9 +10 A disk front, and 18X10 +18 O Disk rear

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0081.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0076.jpg

Finally got the car over to the painter, where he would then shave the third brake light and rear markers, and prep the car even more to get it as smooth as possible.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0003.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0005_001.jpg

The painter was really happy with how smooth it already was, so aside from the markers and third brake light he didn't have to do as much body work as we thought he would. The fender pull was the biggest thing, it had the typical low spots above the pull.

The first thing to get a coat of paint was the hood, he wanted to let me see the color in person before he started on everything else.

Needless to say I was really happy with it. The color changes a whole lot in light, and is really hard to capture correctly with a camera.

It looks very green in this light/photo.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_2104.jpg

Clay, my painter suggested a Super glamour clear to give the paint a very deep glossy finish.

The next time I came to see the car it had been to the booth, and had the whole main body painted and cleared.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0084.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0083.jpg

My buddy pat was over at the shop and took some photos of it in the light for me, it got me pretty excited for sure.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_2142.jpg

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/IMG_2141.jpg

Clay ended up refinishing the door jambs, since the single stage was slightly different than the two stage.

a few weeks later the time had come to pick the car back up. everything but the front lip, mirrors and spoiler had been painted. We had a professional come install the new windshield, and the quarter windows. I really wanted to start busting ass on this thing.

Then installed the tail lights

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0045.jpg

After that, started on the brand new door trim, rubber seals, sunroof and door windows.
the door handles were also fairly new, they were on my gold car.
These are some of my favorite things I've purchased for the build :naughty:

Picked up some tires, and had them mounted on my works.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0002_001.jpg

Layed the new molded carpet down, its pretty dirty in the photo but is really dark and shiny.

http://www.southeast-performance.com/gallery/albums/album55/DSC_0005.jpg

Finally, put the wheels on the car and rolled it outside to check it out.

I immediately fell in love, haha.

It's similar to an older mustang color, also similar to a hatchback civic color.
It's been mixed a little differently than when I bought it though.

When you pull them off there is a foil strip on them, just remove that and use black vinyl to cover it up. You can still see it if you look close in person.

I used a DuPont satin finish exterior trim paint, it comes in a spray can. It was a higher grade than the usual spray can stuff. Nope, all the parts have been scavenged from various places.

Thanks!

215/40/18 and 235/40/18 Federals, the fronts are a bit to big, because federals have a weird sidewall.

Yeah. Also have a few other things up my sleeve (different wheel sets, way bigger brakes, KA-T build, lots of tucking, etc), but I've put the car on hold for the time being until I can get a few other things taken care of house wise.

I'll more than likely get around to it come Feb 2012. Should give me enough time to finish things up around here.

Any reason why you didn't relocate the engine bay harness? Just curious. That's something that always ends up bothering me with most builds. Hah

Dang man, I tip my hat for sure. It's funny to me that people are comparing this build to my car, lol. I might shell out on some cool parts or whatever, but my car is a MESS compared to this thing when it comes to attention to detail. I don't have nearly the cash/time/patience that you do into my car- dents, dings, scratches, busted clips and destroyed moldings everywhere lol.

Awesome job!

I highly appreciate that my dude.
Imagine a Damon/Brett hybrid car.

Blow. minds.

Hah

That sounds like it should be really neat, nice to know somebody else want's to stick with the KA. I'm excited to see the wild parts you scrounge up for it too...

Ah, well at the time the goal was to get the car running in reasonable time.. and unfortunately that is something I sort of made a short cut on and just left it in the stock location :-/. I will have that on my to do list for later on, along with other things.

Bread likes to party.

Buy me some bread, Bread.

Definitely the cleanest 240 I've ever seen, some people aren't a fan of it but I really love the fact you kept it moderately stock with OEM parts and really made them shine.

thanks man.
Brett you have put an insane amount of time into this thing. looks so good and cant wait to see it in person.

Love,
Greg <33

Haha, thats for sure dude! Come by the shop sometime and I'll drive it over so you can have a look at it.

The undercoat was rubbed off by the giant front wheels that it rolled on previously.

Then came the time to do the last remaining things for the interior.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out my seatbelt situation, and finally came up with a solution. I'm very pleased how they turned out.

Clean build....Professional works done.....Good job man.....

By the way, I saw one of your pictures of the interior....especially in the spare tire well.....Did you sparyed some undercoat on that too?.....Or, you just leave it on the stock paint?.....

I would also recommend Project Mu BBK.....you color do really match those Project Mu calipers......

First class build, congrats.
I noticed you've even got the black plastic trim on the ends of the rear pods, I haven't seen that too often, these are usually long gone. The valance also has this trim where it meets the rear bumper, can't quite see this in the pics but you've probably got it sorted.

Appreciated! Yep, once I can get around to it I will put the black trim on the center valence too as long as the fitment is still good.

Thanks Matt. That's the stuff that counts to me, the things most people don't even pay attention to. I guess that's partially why it turned out the way it did. The build only took about a year.. and about 4 months of that time the car was just sitting around collecting dust.

The dash and center console were refinished with an actual spray gun, I would have to ask my painter what paint it was. I thought it was DuPont, but It's slipped my mind.

The doors were sprayed with lizard skin, then dynamat was applied.

Yeah, vinyl should do the trick.

I really wanna get different quarter windows though. I kinda doubt anyone will be able to remove them without scratching the paint...

Haha this is like my 3rd time reading through this thread and I caught this. What is the need of locating the intake pipe all the way down there? I understand on a N/A car where the air doesn't go through an intercooler, but on a turbo car doesn't the whole turbo/intercooler setup defeat the purpose of this?

The intercooler chills the cold pipe, that goes into the intake manifold.
The intake pipe goes directly into the inlet of the turbo.. It's much better to be sucking in cool air under the engine bay, than sucking in all the hot air in the engine bay. Lol.

It kinda bothers me, they are OEM valences, and I'm not sure how to fix it. They fit very well everywhere else. it makes me wonder if the 180sx bumper skin is slightly different, but i HIGHLY doubt it. I have no real solution to it, feel free to suggest some. haha.

Thanks a lot man!

I just picked up the same gauges a day or two ago, but in amber. Nice choice. The wrinkle piping is a good addition, I like it.

Dude I love that wrinkle finish on the piping! Also something I was thinking about on my car, however, over time won't it be harder to wipe clean? Just a thought that I had since I like my engine bays to be easy to clean up :)

Where are you going to mount your gauges?

I think an brake lines from the master cylinder would clean up the look of the bay even more. Chasebays has a good deal on em right now...

He said this on page 5:

I used a DuPont satin finish exterior trim paint, it comes in a spray can. It was a higher grade than the usual spray can stuff. Nope, all the parts have been scavenged from various places.

Levan. B, did you put LED's in the gauge cluster? Just noticed the blue tint around the speedo.

Small updates...

Pulled the lower half of the intake off, The idle up valve was not working correctly. the idle was at a steady 1500 RPM at full temperature, since it was already apart I threw a new IAC on too.

They're called AN finishers. Basically a glorified hose clamp.
