I already know a few of you hate my paint choice. We dont have a shop nor all the proper tools do be doing all of this but we work with what we have. I dont care to be honest.

So with that out of the way here we go...

As some of you may know this is what my s13 used to look like

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/FILM3870.jpg

this is what i ragged on for a couple years with the a/c iced up

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/installinfastersforfront.jpg

sold the KA,tranny, and sil front and skirts about a year ago.....car has been sitting in my garage with an inch of dust on it. since i sold my truck last month i bought all my swap stuff for this piece of crap

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/ls1.jpg

got my stuff from Sikky.com through HELLACALLIJOSH @ BLU808.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/IMG_0674.jpg
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/IMG_0675.jpg

We finally decided to get rolling on this damn thing a couple months ago, pops came to the house and grabbed the trailer and car and brought it down to the Becker-Racing Headquarters so we can get rocking.

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/IMG_0690.jpg

First thing we wanted to get the engine bay prepped and ready for the new stuff
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/IMG_0702.jpg
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/IMG_0706.jpg
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/IMG_0709.jpg

after we cut out the rad support and inner fender area we took out all the wiring as well. no more power door locks but we will keep the power windows until further notice

all the a/c stuff is gone :( dont worry though we have something up our sleeves... you think imma sweat my balls off in South Florida?? ha

removed the whole electric sunroof assembly
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/IMG_0708.jpg

We are not fabricators or welders by any means but we get the job done. Picked up a new radiator and grabbed a pretty banged up front bumper from a buddy so we can finish the mock up of the front. The bumper wont be an issue to repair, ive seen my father fix worse off glass parts in the past.

no hood issues with rad cap location
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/20110717_68.jpg

Slight mock up for the fuel cell. The cell brace will be mounted under the trunk skin. Of course a bulkhead will be mounted between the cockpit and trunk.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/20110717_20.jpg

Ditched the dash...pops started mocking up a glass dash just for the bare necessities

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/20110717_61.jpg

the front top and bottom brace are just about ready for paint....welded some supports/Dzus faster tabs for the fenders and bumper..also finished making the hood pin/rad support plates.

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1744.jpg

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1740.jpg

also finished the fuel cell rack and welded it in place. we are going to lay sheet metal just up to the edges of the cell once the new roll cage goes in since mine isnt legal. Just have grab some hardwar from the shop to bolt the cell to the rack. then we will locate the battery back there as well of course
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1739.jpg

i suck at welding by the way! This is the rear bumper support im welding up.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1733.jpg
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1732.jpg

here the support is on the car now. we used the stock bumper support mounts since they bolt up just fine.
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1734.jpg

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1738.jpg

and here is my dads other project...he has just about restored it completely to original state from the 60s... all hand crafted wood with glass cowlings and a buick V6 motor...should do over 100mph on the water when its done!
http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1726.jpg

since we dont have a shop with a lift and all that fancy stuff yes the car stayed on the trailer. it aint a backyard build if you dont make things happen old school style. Motor and trans mounted, driveshaft fits right in, headers were some what of a breeze..it pays to spend money i guess!

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1893.jpg

http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/downsouths13/Garu%20pix/DSCN1889.jpg

He also got all the body pieces fitted on the car. needs minor adjustments here and there but its good for now.

DONT MIND THE DIFFERENT SIZE TIRE ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. JUST ON THERE TO ROLL THE CAR AROUND FOR THE MEAN TIME!

i am happy with the out come so far of the car. couldnt have done it without my pops being so motivated! i love that dude!

so still need a few things for it to be started up and tested out. hopefully within the next month or so we will be driving this thing! cant wait!!

Great build. Only a few questions though.
1- What type of paint did you use?
2- What metal did you use for the tube front and is it track/ "spec" legal?
3- Is the way that the front is bolted on, is that track legal as well?
4- Lastly, what are you gonna do for head lights?

1: paint is single stage Imron paint.
2: we used just regular steel from i think home depot. and according to Doug from SWD its legal for the track. that dude knows the rule books like the back of his hand. everything i do i confirm with him first since he is the tech guy as well.
3: like above according to Doug everything that we are doing is legal. when everything is together it is solid as if everything was OEM fitment. But super fast easy access.
4: We are going to do a plexi or lexan glass over mounted fog lights or whatever.

kind of like this.

i have another hood that will probably do this to for variety.

Great work for a "backyard shop".

I like the use of dzus fasteners. More people should use those instead of zip ties. The sunroof scoop is sweet too. Also, the hood hinges are trick.

Yea i was a bit concerned about how loud it will be, but pops made some baffling so we will see how it goes. If its too loud then we will change accordingly.

we will see how this one turns out. we might mass produce them in the future if they are worth the time.

got some sheet metal work complete today. still need to do some heat shroud work between the cell and exhaust, and the trans tunnel. Also still need to remove all sound deadening crap. here is what we did today

:-) Your doing better work then people with money lol
And again............

They originally did my dash similar to yours (aluminum bezel) but after they were done with comp they made it more "street" and I never got that piece with the car:-\ ...I might have you mock on up for me:-). I noticed there's went down further on the sides where the cruise buttons etc are.I'll try and find a pic of it for you.

DownSouthSlider

yea dude id like to see it. bad news is the dash isnt FD legal so it looks like we are going to have to make a full fiberglass OEM replacement dash. its in the rule books. oh well we will keep it how it is for now until im ready for pro-am events.

Sorry if it was covered and i missed it, but are you running windows?

Is this a track only vehicle, the build sure seems to be going that direction...

I like that you are doing things with purpose in mind, and then making it look good afterwards, very nice, keep it up

DownSouthSlider

thanks dude. yea the electric windows are staying for now. will most likely have a window net as well. but we want to do full lexan later on down the road.

i know its in but just a idea that i woulda done if i was taking my exhaust all the way back is v-band it for quick removal if you need to do emergency repairs. mines dumping out right at the headers, open works for me but good job ill be following this

DownSouthSlider
12-04-2011, 03:25 PM
yea open isnt legal for Formula D/pro-am events. we were gonna run the exhaust like this until i re-read the rule book.

But your concern about quick repair, we have it clamped in the middle so we can remove it easy and quick if needed.

thanks dude!

Great build man, its really nice to see ingenuity going into a build rather than the same old bolt on's. Cudos to you and your pops.

I'd like to do a LS swap in my fastback. They look sweet and turn heads with the sound they make. The only thing I do'nt like is the steering pump that GM uses. It looks like the same one they have been useing since the 60's. I'm sure someone could fab up a braket to use a Nissan pump.

EazyS13
12-07-2011, 07:26 PM
it probably is lol, not to mention most of the pumps are crap, i changed a few of them. build came along nicely man, want to see it run!!

ill snap a few close ups tomorrow. we used plexiglass for the covers but of course they cracked so i need to go pick up some lexan to finish the buckets. also need to order another set of lights. there will be two in each bucket. the holidays has had me put buying stuff for the car on hold at the moment. i hope right after christmas to have more progress

I got a few questions. What did you use for a tube bender, also would it be in the best interest for someone doing this swap to do a tube front end for more room to drop the motor in with ease? Is the bolt on tube front end XDC and Formula D legal? Anyone know how hard it is to drop in a ls with the stock rad support? Looks awesome. If you don't mind how much did you pay for the silky stuff through that other guy?

Thanks

Motor runs like a champ, but i killed 3rd gear a couple weeks ago at a local event. So thats going to need a rebuild shortly, but money is tight at the moment. We have a baby girl on the way due at the end of March.

Bert did move to Canada but is back down here for a little while.

the car needs some suspension and steering tweaking plus the powersteering pump cries like a baby. works just makes noise.

here are a couple vids of the car running. along with some South Florida drift action!
