so i just got my sr running after a bottom end rebuild. .02 pistons, rings, stock rods, all bearings, polished crank, honed cylinders, and decked. motor is running great. tps was set, timing is on, not leaks.

i was told to drive it easy for the first 500 miles and from there have at it, but is there anything i still need to check? or any advice for me? thanks joe

Oil change I changed my oil roughly 5o miles in. Rings seat fairly quick. And all that goes into your oil. My friend ran his 500 mi before an oil change and his was fine. Id do a compression test, check plugs, check for oil residue. Make sure everything os tight

ok good to hear. oil change will be coming up. i noticed when i looked down to piston number one when the spark plug was removed i noticed the top of the piston looking moist after the first run or so, now it looks to be drying up some. any input?

Make sure your injector seals are good and not leaking past the injector into the cyl

there is a thread on here that had a link about the different ways to break in motors. from what i remember this link suggested a hard break-in because the metals, materials and production procedure nowadys have vastly improved from the "good 'ol days". It's not the first time i've heard of it but i'm by no means familiar with this " hard break-in" procedure either. I'll try to find the link for you. I do remeber it saying to stay away from synthetics for break-in because they're to good in they're too good at lubricating everything and actually prevent proper break-in. By no means am i telling you to do this, i just read it, then visited the site from the link, I'm not a professional but i know seating the rings needs to happen early or it wont be right.

After building a motor the most important thing you need to get right is the rings seating properly as soon as possible. This should be done within the first 5 miles of starting it up for the first time. You need to pull a hard vacuum on the crankcase by letting the rpms drop from consecutively higher rpms. 1st gear 1k-5k-1k, 2nd gear 2k-6k-2k, so on and so on. This is the proper way to break in a motor

What Jtuned said on and off on and off on and off

im sure you will be fine, however you drove it. Just remember to check all your essentials, even if it seems repetitive. fluids topped, no leaks, timed in and tuned properly, etc.

I did the msjority of my 500 mile break in on and off.

I got perfect compression except for one where some detonation did some damage. Wiseco .040 overs

remember not to use synthetic oil. no one covered that yet.

it has 10w-30 synthetic in it right now. change it? just for now or all the time? why?

synthetic oil is too slippery for the piston rings to seat properly. the rings need to wear onto the cylinders to get good compression. if the oil is too slippery, it will take a long time. i use nd30 for breaking in a rebuilt engine. then change the oil after 100 or so miles of regular driving. don`t keep the rpm at one range. stop and go street driving is what you want to do. use regular oil(5-30, 10-30, etc.) till you get at least 10k miles. after that, then you can use synthetic oil. the weight of the oil will vary on the engine bearing clearances. the looser the clearance, the thicker the oil you want to use.

I used 10w-30 conventional oil for about 500 miles of regular driving, then switched to synthetic, compression is perfect.

ok right on. tonight when i get home im gonna change the oil. i have 5w-30 and ill move to synthetic after 10k miles. thanks guys
