What are lugs, and what are they usefull for?

Well i just got my car, and i'm a total car noob for the most part. I tried looking up informtion on lugs and really wasnt able to find a very solid answer, and plus i would rather hear it from someone who knows what they're saying. Sorry if this is a repost, this is pretty much my first post in this site =]:newbie:
