View Full Version : 1/4 mile dispute?

Okay this is kind of a general post.

I talked to this guy yesterday that claimed his 88/89 escort GT ran a 15.5 1/4 mile. I think this guy is smoking crack, the car is obviously stock with the exception to his Autozone dual tip muffler.
He then asked me what mine ran, I literally have no idea.

So my question is, does anyone have an S14 auto with about 135k miles on engine, with CAE intake, Exhaust, pulley kit, and headers, that has run a 1/4 mile?
Or does anyone have a guess what a 1/4 mile would be in my case?
I know it all depends on the driver, but humor me....

Thanks for any input.

dude why don't you guys just both pay your 10 bucks and go to grudge night and figure it out?
by the way there are tons of parts for the earlier 1.9 liter motor.. used to a scort and I know that 99% of them are slow, but there are a few in this country that are real sleepers. BAT can even import twin weber side draft kits for them, you can make a 9000 rpm 220HP race motor out of em...

Well, I could race him anywhere, but that's not what I'm looking to do right now. Too many risks with my car, license, and ticket status. Honestly, I don't think this is a sleeper. I think he's just a guy that wants his car to be faster than it really is.

i think he meant take it to a drag strip...that way you will know your times and crap and so will he...

well i ran my car at the track and managed to get 15.865 and i have a 96 240sx manual with CAI and exhaust (42000 miles). i have a 97 240sx auto that i used to have since my dad drives now and it had the same mods and did pretty well in my opinion. Im thinkin 16.1 around there with those mods and the car has 87000 miles on it as of now.

Yeh I agree, I think he meant take it to a strip and thats what the $10 would be for, not to like buy the guy dinner or something....lol just giving you crap! I am kinda interested because my 13 has Intake and Exhuast coming and I am interested in how it will perform, I know its only a little percentage of HP but I guess it all helps....good luck with the times and stuff!

Yes, I meant grudge night at your local strip. Its usually only 10 or 15 bucks. And it means no more BS.

Just a general reply to a more general post that's really on the wrong board on this forum:

Escorts really seem underrated. Most of them suck, but check out the newer ones, the ZX2's. My friend has an '01, same Zetec engine as the focus with a very light car (~2400 lbs. dry), and it runs just a bit behind my car for straight drag racing (depending on how much wheelspin hurts me)...with a MT and some basic bolt ons they're quick, quick enough that driver skill can put them ahead of a lot of cars...His is faster than a brand new Tiburon GT (raced, then test drove one too), we've beat v6 mustangs, a r/t (nonturbo) stealth, a bunch of cars that really just laughed at him and by all means should have beat him...go figure.

Hehehe...

My auto did a best of 16.6 @ 84mph...and that is a good time for an auto S14. Stock is more like 17.1 @ 82...f^@$ing pitiful.

I swapped it to a 5-speed, and ran 15.6 @ 89, same mods...

You can put a shift kit in the auto or have it built and it will shift alot better. Mine is no longer sloppy or slow shifting, it's just the launch that kills us. IMO you should take him though, if you can get your rpms up before you let it go. Just powerbrake it until the point right before your tires let go, and when the tree drops stand on the gas pedal and don't let up. I don't know about you but mine shifts at 6,000rpm every time, which is a little past the point of max power, but it puts you at higher rpms when it goes into the next gear. I've found that works best for me.

Orion is spot on, minus mileage. I ran a 17.3 bone stock. A guy with 140k on his clock ran a 17.7 stock. I think that you'll be in the 16.6 (good engine, spec compression, ect) to 17.0.

your both driving the wrong car if you wanna go fast in a straight line.

In stock form it is definately the wrong car, but the potential is undeniable. Put a huge stall converter in the trans like a 4000 or so and you will definately slop on some manuals. Noone can shift as fast as a built auto, and noone is as consistant. It never misses a shift or is late. Alot of Pro Drag racers run built auto's for that very reason. Before you start talking about cost, I had mine completely built from scratch good for 400hp for $1500. I just didn't have a huge stall put in because it's an everyday driver. It all depends on what you want your car to be.

you could with a high stall with manual lockup for street use.

What does the manual lock up do? Sorry for the noob question.

well thanks for the replies. I'm planning on a manual swap in the next couple months so it doesn't really matter anymore.
I'm gonna take it to the track after I complete the swap and then I'll have some numbers to talk about.

Thanks again.

when the green light drops the BS stops, dont worry about all this theoretical "what could my car run?" everyone is different and cars run differently, so if you are really worried about anything like that take it to the track and get some numbers, you might not be happy with them, but they are a lot stronger than somebody sayin a guy i talked to online said his car ran XX in the 1/4
