I originally was going to just go with an LS1 swap, but the idea of a singled 2jz arose recently. Reguardless of what swap I go with, I am shooting for about a 120 trap (400whp?). It will be a highway king so I am content with the sit and spin 8 minute 60' :keke: . What I am wondering is which will hold up better with that much power in the longrun?

1j... cheaper than a 2j and just as good. Specially for 400whp.
My plan was 1j, and a 57 trim t4 with cams
20psi= 500whp@4000rpm, revved out to 8k. Stock block.
Done.

1j's are reliable to around 700whp. I think you'll be safe.

Both are solid motor for that kinda of power... I would say a ls1 is a better choice since it would be close to stock and not stressing the engine much.. In contrary, the 2jz would be cheaper in the short and long run.. I'm personally going with a 2jz with a 6765 to try to make over 600 on pump+meth..

LSX = Bolt ons,Cam,and some headwork and a good tune should be a 12 flat mid 11 car all day long.

a 2JZGTE with bolt ons and a good tune can put down 400whp with practically nothing done to it.

i love my 2JZGTE. my friend has a cam'd bolt on S14 with a LS2 and i think my lil single 2j 240 has him beat. haven't raced yet. his car makes 420RWHP mine makes 410RWHP on 15.5psi on a 62mm

Got a rb25 but if it was between those 2 it would be ls1. I/H/C can get you to your mark pretty easy. I seen a s13 at the 1/4 with a ls1 in stock form get into the low 12's all day the worst run he had if I remember correctly was a 12.6 at 113.

id have to say JZ...down the road you might want more power for fun etc. that thing can handle 900+

This was in regards to the comment made that an LS1 would be at a "happier" stress level compared to a 2JZ. The 2J would definitely be less stressed at the same power level.

What about tranny wise? I'm not sure if it's just the places I am looking, but I feel like I'm seeing a lot more problems with T56's than the R154. Any thoughts on this?

I think the ls1 can be had for a cheaper price than the 2j can, parts are cheaper for american engines and you get the 6 speed with the ls1 t56, if you go with the 2jz and the 6 speed that's going to run you almost double what you would spend on the ls1. Then think about power to weight ratio, the ls1's aluminum block is really close to the weight of the KA, then think about putting the iron block 2jz and tell me the handling won't be affected, I think the ls1 is far more of a smarter price point as well, it just depends on what you plan on doing with it as well.

For a DD or Highway monster i'd go the JZ route any day if i had all the funds in place. LS motors are loud as fawk and would be annoying when just cruising. Now for a track car the ball game changes..

planning on it this spring/summer.

Parts prices and availability you simply CANNOT beat domestic shit. hell you can get performance parts at NAPA,Autozone, etc for a LSX motor. everyone and there brothers cousin has seemed to mod a LSX so used parts are all over the net for little to no money.

Where JZ shit is a little more hard to find, but used prices are very good but buying shit new for the JZ get's expensive in a hurry. since i already have a JZ car i was throwing around the idea of building a LSX S13. but i kinda wanna do another JZ they are just so much fun.

Another good point, a good tuned single turbo 5/6spd JZ car will RAPE on the freeway. all motor LSX car would be badass if doing a auto-x/road racing car.

5.3l head swap + E85 and you'll be seeing 500hp

LS would be for pure practicality, JZ for the love of JDM, Turbos and Inline 6s.

You can also go 5.3l. Engines run for about $500, do a simple custom turbo build and you'll see +500whp for $3,000 total. Check out Hot Rod magazine article.

The engines are tanks, but a 1JZ would be cheaper as $2,000 nets full motor set with trans. T56s and TKOs are hella expensive. For a dedicated drift car I'd ditch the overdrive, save a grand and go Richmond ST10 (4spd).
