Interesting, doesn't sound like rod knock.

I hear some of the s14 motors have that ticking due to the vtc? might want to check there or take the cover off and see if any parts of your timing chain retainers have broken off.

That's the sound I get for a few seconds when I change my oil sometimes.. low oil in a Hydro valve lifter. Probably just a dead/dying lifter. Easy fix if you do it now. I wouldn't suspect any damage to the valves.

Your HLA's (Hydraulic Lash Adjusters) have air in them, they need to be bled (Refer to FSM)

I had same problem in my 300zx. Either VTC spring is bad/wrong or (and most likely) lifter tick. It doesnt make this sound when the motor is at operating temp does it? If it goes away at op. temp, try this method to help find which lifters are sticking. When the motor is cold, start it and get a small 2x2 (about 6in is fine) and hold it to each position on the top of the motor that the cyclinders are. Use it like a stethoscope to help pinpoint which area is sticky. Usually just an oil flow issue around that area of the heads. Just my 2 pennies. GL

my single cam does that every once in a blue moon, does it go away when the car is warmed?

most likely a lifter, that or you need to check you oil level man.

I took the head apart and it looks like one of my valve springs is missing a shim... FRICK! I really don't want to go through all the work of figuring out what thickness it was and stuff...
