i have a 95 nissan LE (canadian) and the stock exhaust with the 2 chrome tips from the factory are starting to bug me.
The problem is that i want to stay low-key...and im on a budget. I personally HATE loud/big exhausts and i think stock is loud enough for me.

Are all the aftermarket exhausts (or mufflers even) really loud (im staying NA), and are tehre any with small, almost stock-looking tips? i dont care much for the 3 inch size.
thx

why don't you just get a quality exhaust mid pipe (piping after the cat but before the muffler section) that would give you some hp but still "sleeper look". Or you can just get a catback system from who ever is selling one on the forum and just get a silencer.

why are they bugging you? Like you just dont like the look in general or theyre rusting and falling off or what?

I know you want to stay low key and this exhaust (http://www.rs-r.com/exmag.htm) should do it. Only problem is it might be too much for your wallet, for example $525 at Phase2.

I put a Tanabe Super Medalion Hyper Spec (60mm) on my NA car. It's very quiet. It's deep and you definitely know it's there but there's no noticable hwy drone. It's perfect for me because A) I'm old and B) I'm constantly on road trips. It's around $500 which I think is reasonable for a full SS catback. Here's a pic.

what about something like a flowmaster 4000 series dual outlet muffler, a resonator or 2 and half inch oversize custom plumbing? Any thoughts?

misnomer
10-15-2003, 12:19 PM
Custom exhausts you can usually get a decent system for a lower price, but the main drawback is it's untested and as such you won't know what kind of performance or sound you'll be dealing with. Let your muffler shop know what you want, though, and they'll probably be able to put together something for you.

A few other exhausts to consider for a stock look are the HKS Sport and the Borla exhausts (if they're still available. . .). Borla's exhaust can be found at Nissan Motorsports, and nowhere else as far as I know.

i like the idea of getting a muffler --> cat upgrade and leaving my old muffler on. what kinda of HP loss will there be W.R.T. having a performance muffler.

thanks

btw, this is for a s13 SR

My car I installed half inch overstock plumbing from the collector back to the stock muffler. I removed the cat and resonator. It made a bit more high-end power, like the engine didnt peak off after 5000 rpms, more like 6500 now, though slightly less off the line. I couldnt stand the sound from the whole no cat thing so I installed one and the sound got better and there was no noticeable change in the power. Note this is non turbo application.

hmm thanks for the suggestions guys
the stock is just bugging me becaues its pretty ugly...there are 2 TINY tips screwed onto the muffler, and their crooked.
ill look into getting a custom one somewhere. thanks

HKS Hiper or 5zigen Border III... I have the Border III, my buddy Chris has the Hiper... both are very quiet, altho I must admit the Border III is pretty quiet (even with my exhaust leak :); before the leak it was SUPER quiet)... even on a NA setup I would venture to guess they are quiet.

Hiper comes in 65 (?) 70 and 80mm I think.. prolly 85/90 also...

Border III comes in 60 and 70 and is JDM bling so you have to order it from JDM land...

Also as others have mentioned I understand the ExMag from RS*R is teh quiet also...

Good luck

Got Sileighty?

i wish someone would post a sound clip of the border III. its the one im thnking of going with cuz my stock muffler is developing a rust hole.

A friend of mine has the Border III on his S14, and it IS a nice exhaust. . very quiet, mellow tone. . but obviously not stock.. it's not ricey, but it looks SOMEWHAT like a fart can :D
But it doesn't appear to be a POS. . the tip design is very nice, and has a substantial look to it ..

And since it's available in N/A (60 MM), it's not annoying on the highway.
(my stock exhaust is shot to hell. . I'm getting this replacement, full cat back, for around 420-430 shipped)

I've got the 5Zigen Border3, and I second the opinions of folks here. Although...it doesn't look very fartcan (I've got the smaller, NA-version)
Absolutely wonderful sound. Quiet, but with a nice 'get up and go' tone to it. I'm really quite happy with it.

Greddy's SP-Max has much the same look to it, so I'd imagine would also be pretty quiet...I could be entirely wrong though. Someone with that exhaust want to look?

KoukiS14
10-19-2003, 11:25 AM
lol yeah I retract my fartcan comment. . I was looking at an uninstalled pic while I said that. (while I still plan on purchasing in the near future). . lol

took another look at my friend's, and it is not fartcan. . my favorite feature of the appearance is the beveled tip.. gives it a more substantial appearance.

I've been looking for a quiet, subtle exhaust for awhile now...The border III and tanabe hyper still have huge tips, which I don't dig...The best option I've came across is the RSR Ex-Mag...only thing keeping me from buying it is the 80mm piping, I have a N/A KA...

I'm going to get custom 2.5" piping, and Magnaflow muffler and high flow cat...Magnaflows flow great and will sound nice and low on the KA with a resonator...

From rs-r.com:

Nissan
240sx 88-94 80 $609.00 12-N010
240sx 95-99 80 $709.00 12-N020

If it really is 70mm = 2.75 inches, I might get it...

Hmmm...well that is 3.15 inches...Kind of large for NA, probably alot of loss of low end power and torque...Sucks, the Ex-mag is the perfect choice for me...and unfortunately, they don't make a universal muffler...

Both of them are 80mm diameter, I think that's the only size being available at this time. This will be my next mod for my s14, soooo quiet.

I believe they do sell just the black can in 80mm and 60mm, this info was on their site a while back before the update.

I have been looking for a quiet exhaust. Having a loud one is somewhat embarrassing for me to drive with personally. Need to save up to get rid of the current one that came with my car when I bought it (some Sebring Brand).

How quiet is the Apex'I N1 (dual or single) with the silencer(s)? This was my original option, since I figured the silencers would keep it down and not kill performance a whole lot.

I want the RSR so bad. I want 80mm but I don't want extremely loud.
My GP sports spec III 3.5" is too loud.

according to phase2 , the RS*R's are backordered about 3 months

if you have a hook up dousan to get an ex mag sooner for s13 let me know !

have you guys looked into the nismo weldina exhaust?? this guy with a CA18 near me has one and it is super quiet while sounding awsome at the same time. only prob is its upwards of 1000 bones, but if your willing to shell out that kinda cash...
