View Full Version : SR with leaky Front Main Seal

So this winter I ran 5w30 Castrol GTX in my SR to protect the internals when it was cold, and I haven't changed it yet (haven't driven it much either).

Last week I started it up (about 70degrees out) and I let it idle and warm up for about three minutes. I went to close the hood, and noticed a small puddle of oil under the car, and thought the oil pan was leaking..

When I looked closer, I saw that it was leaking from behind the crank pulley, and dripped about once every ten seconds (front main seal leak).

So, my question is this: should I replace it, or just run a thicker oil in it (and would a thicker oil stop the leak)? And if I WERE to run a thicker oil, any suggestions? I know the guy who had my motor before me ran 0w50 at a track day last year.

Thanks

if it is warming up then replace the seal and change your oil to a thicker weight while you are at it.

changing the oil weight isnt going to stop the seal from leaking.

at the track i was running 15W50

sounds fine to me. i ran 10w30 when i first got the car and never had an issues. it doesnt get super hot here though. you should be good with 10w40.

its done, change it. I run a 15w-40 Diesel oil but my car only sees track use.

5w40 or 10-40 is fine, and a front seal is $10 and takes 30 min to replace just do it
