im sure this has been discussed but i have no idea what it would be called... its on both sohc and dohc ... there is a tube that goes from the intake to this black box, then into some kind of ....somethin. then to the exhaust. im sure this is some kind of emissions , but what is it and what does it do.?

Are those S13s? My car doesn't have that

I have an S13 KA24e and mine has that box as well. Once the hose that goes from the airbox to that box broke and the car wouldn't pass emmissions. I hooked it up again and it passed the next time. I know that those things could be completely unrelated, but I believe it is. I'm curious to find the truth though.

Thanks for bringing it up,
Matt

same here, my gas mileage has gone all to hell, car feels a little sluggish too, but i also need a tuneup sooooo that might be the culprit..

What does aiv stand for?

Air Intake Valve. pulls fresh intake air into the exhaust stream to dilute exhaust, if i'm not mistaken...

Not to dilute it so much as to add oxygen to light off and maintain the reaction inside the catalyst when the engine is cold and idling.

S14s don't use an AIV because they simply run extra lean at idle to do the same thing.

if i recall it actually mixes fresh air with some exhaust air and let it run happy w/ the emission people
