ok so my megan downpipe hangs like an inch below my frame rails. im looking for a dp that tucks closer to the chassis for better clearance? i was looking at this circuit sports, anybody have experience? Circuit Sport SR20 Downpipe (http://www.importperformanceshop.com/cispsrdo.html)

and what about a 1-2-1 setup? i have seen a few but have no idea who makes it? where to buy?

I'm in the same boat.

I just got rid of a no name solid downpipe for a megan with flexpipe after I thought that the exhaust not being able to flex was a cause of my turbo lines cracking (now braided).

But it hands sooo low I've destroyed the SS weave within literally ten miles of driving. Now I'm considering going back to the no name, it had a slight curvature throughout over the megan's almost right angle bend which scares me. The old one would drag the ground, this one is going to hit.

I'll see if I cant find some pictures comparing the two.

There seems to be no affordable option and I dont have the tools to weld SS.

Bolts backing out, then hitting something.

Lines cracked/split.

Coolant and oil everywhere.

No fun.

blu808, what is really lacking, is something similar to the Power By Max downpipe, but without the top portion that connects to A T25/T28. Nice smooth sectional cuts, a flex section and fits just as snug. I'd love to run one, but I'd like to run something similar in combination with a twin scroll top mount setup.

I've broken countless studs and had a lot of hardware rattle loose because my exhaust system lacks a flex section to help deal with the vibration.

Without that top piece for the T25/T28 turbine housing, you could prob. market it for around $230-$250 msrp, which is a little easier to grasp than shelling out 380 bucks and ditching the tomei expreme outlet i already blew $210 on.

EDIT:

Also forgot to mention guys, that ebay is a ripoff of HPI's downpipe.

I've been running a Megan or similar shit ball copy cat downpipe for 3-4 years now, without issue. I'm chatting with my distributor friend right now. The thing about TI is that you cannot weld it to other materials. so the expensive part is that you have to machine or waterjet your own flanges.

It will be 3" x .0433" Titanium tubing.

This may end up being too expensive guys.

I will plan on making some nice stainless ones though.

Ok so big news. Full Titanium Sr20det down pipes. with CNC milled flanges for under $350.

Basically. My supplier is the same company that is making all the ti exhaust for the r35 and also supplies TUBI with their materials. No flex section. but ti flexes alot. it will be under 2 lbs. and will have the jig made off of my custom down pipe that I send them.

If anyone is really interested we could make this happen. I am not trying to turn this into a for sale thread. I just have had the same problems in the past. I am not making any profit on this. maybe $10 per down pipe to cover welding, customs, ect.

Im in the area i may be interested, i was planning on going with the pbm pipe but i may be interested in yours since its around the same price. If youve got any mock up pics id be interested to see them. Also i dont have a stock like tranny mount i use a peak performance one so there is no way i could support the downpipe there with that mount that they all come with, idk if that would pose a problem or not.

spend the money right the first time, or pay twice as much when you decide smashing downpipes isn't worth it. My pipe litereally is milimeters away from the body but my solid engine mounts raise the engine slightly by half an inch. The frame rails are lower than my downpipe and cat. My exhaust no longer hits driveways backing out of them, and matted with a catco high flow cat. The car purs like a fucking kitten, cops don't even give me looks.

The sound is very tolerable on the freeway and it doesn't sound like a fucking civic blazing onto an on ramp in 1st gear like EVERY OTHER 240 owner who doesn't run a cat and runs a straight pipe for 10-20hp.

imo I don't really think that bracket thing does much for the pipe in my opinion. The only reason I bolted it up is because my exhaust flange on my last cat BROKE due to no support on the dp and no flex sections. I wouldn't worry about it at all really. You could always just chop it off. Or ask PBM to send it to you w/o it.

Maybe its just me, but I like the DP and turbo neck seperate. I HATE pulling the turbo studs when taking the motor out and other work. Granted its not that often and I beleive in fewer parts = less problems, but I dread taking those bolts off.

If I get home this weekend I'll post current pictures and the damage.

In the mean time I'm going back to the old non-flex DP till,

A. Get a tig at the shop to make or modify mine

I've had a couple of welders tell me you could do something like 316 stainless to Ti, so it doesn't have to be exotic. This is all from what I hear, I don't TIG.

These guys can also fuse two gum wrappers together(crazy, wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it) - so take it for what its worth on if its easy. Some of their welds are indistinguishable from the $quarter mil + robotic orbital TIG welders too. :snoop:

blu808
12-06-2009, 11:39 PM
well i don't doubt what you are saying. but in the real world we only weld TI to TI I would agree that you can weld ti to other metals. but nothing that would be cost effective. and I do not know, and have never heard of anyone being able to do so without using a hyperberic chamber and a completely sealed argon environment. this would easily make the cost of each down pipe over $1200 We are trying to make these parts affordable to everyone.

It is true. you have to pay for good stuff. but no need to overpay for parts that are built to go to space.

Def
12-07-2009, 12:01 AM
You can turn up the gas and then hook up a separate hose in the other end of the tube to backpurge it. Seen plenty of strong Ti welds done that were outside of an argon chamber.

You probably already know this, but yea I hear what you're saying. Ti is still coming down in price, so it's becoming a little more affordable to do things with it.

Don't they use titanium on jet engines, I heard someone tell me how they saw the actual titanium shrink when the jet got fired up, because it works opposite, unlike other metals that expand ti shrinks, was this guy telling me the truth or what?

blu808
12-08-2009, 09:15 PM
Ti should expand with heat just like stainless.

Most people don't use Ti for exhaust manifolds because with the odd shapes, various welds, and material thickness it is likely to crack. Also combined that TI flexes so much that if a heavy turbo were attached it would compound all those issues.

I can make Stainless ones as well. I will let you guys know.

Cosmetic I know but not risking it an 1" below my frame rail any longer.

Any progress on the DP blu? I blew up my entire exhaust system this weekend going over the train tracks haha...... Ripped the o2 housing off the turbo and the rest of the exhaust got flushed out the back like a turd

Same thing happened to me when I had it on my KA-T... The flex section right there is just a bad idea, hands down. I wish they would have incorporated a skid plate or something, haha.

Sounds like a good idea just make sure the angle on the flange is identical so it all matches up. DOO IT take out like an inch or two, however much hangs below the frame rail.

Still working on this guys. If you cannot wait I would suggest getting the Powered by Max custom down pipe. It is a great item.

I should have the prototype done here in the next week or so.

$1200 for the full system with burnt titanium tip coating
$1100 for the full system in brushed stainless
$350 for the axle back duals with a 3" round transition
$450 for the axle back duals with a 3" round transition and burnt titanium tip coating

i just installed the full turbo back on my car and its even higher than the cobra DP and you dont have to worry about catching the flanges on pot holes and shit, ie slip joints w/ springs

I will start working on this on Monday. If you guys want I could build titanium oval down pipes with flex sections. But it would not be cheap.

I'm in the market for a DP and this sounds like exactly what I need, PM when you have a price all sorted out!
