checking timing

hey guys i just finished my motor and i want to crank it by hand to make sure the timing is set correctly. The motor is out of the car on a stand and has no oil in it. Can i rotate it a few times to check timing or do i have to put the oil pan on and fill it with oil.

if the motor has plenty of assembly oil and lubricants it should be fine to crank it by hand
