View Full Version : Some nice metal shavings in my engine...

Well, something started knocking.

i can verify that it is not the following.

Rods
Rod bearings
rings/pistons (why would they?)


Basically I look around in the block and it's looks nice and clean and nothing seems to be out of place.

But, I have this shit in my pan and in my pickup.

I have like gold metal shavings in my oil pan and shit.

But for the life of me, I can't find where it's coming from.

The only thing gold in the block is the crank itself.

Nothing is even close to hitting it though....

I just wanna get your guys' insight on it.

have you tried cold cranking it to look for damage on both sides?

Yes, I have done that multiple times, that's what I had to do to check the rod bearings, it turns with ease.

But obviously something is wrong if there is metal shavings...

what motor oil were you using? Have you ever used any additives?

What type of oil filter were you using?

is it your thrust bearing? my oil pan looked like that after i spun 2 rod bearings.

Same here. I'm saying it's your rod bearings.

Did you actually physically inspect them?

did you take the rod and main caps off? try looking up top in the head. you may find your answer there. or. oil pump bearing?

Ive checked the rod bearings with a feeler gauge.

I would take better pics, but my camera is crap.

Anyways, I think it may just be the front main bearing.

I used OEM filter, fully synthetic 10w30.

I took the rod caps off and went ahead and replaced the rod bearings while I had them out.

I have all the bolts off to get to the main bearing, but i just can't get the damn thing off..

Any suggestions?

So you aren't sure of the problem yet and you already spec'd in new bearings? You should probably get that main out first before torquing down any new bearings. Plus if you had the caps off anyway, it would have been a good time to pull the crank and check the mains.

When I had the rod caps off, I tried to pull the crank and check the mains.

I havn't torqued them yet, just got them within oem specs with a feeler gauge so I know when I reinstall.

you dont use a feeler gauge to measure rod bearings clearance. you use plastigage.

It came with the bearings, so I know it's the right thing, just fucked the name up.

Lets get back on task.

Did you buy the correct spec bearings?

As in did you look on find the Main Bearing Grade #?

If not, look at the bottom of your block and you will find the Cylinder Grade Block # on the passenger side of the block if I remember correctly.

Then, look on your crank to find the Crankshaft Grade #

Add those two together and you have your Main Bearing Grade #

Possible results are as follows:
0-Black
1-Brown
2-Green
3-Yellow
4-Blue

You get your clearance by TQing them all down...

Now if you already knew and did all of this then have a nice day

I'm thinking that all those metal shavings from the busted bearing has already made their way into you oil galleys and pump, so if you're just replacing the busted bearing and try to run the engine in its current condition aren't you just going to be repeating the same shit again? Wouldn't all the shavings in your oil galley are going be pumped back into the fresh bearing and and the other bearings and nuke your engine?

^ ROFL hahahhahah. On a serious note, I had the same shavings in my sr before I swapped it in. I upgraded a bunch of stuff before dropping the motor in, and when I pulled the pan to inspect it bam... metal. I don't know what it is, but I just try and keep it under 5k typically. I don't really race the car anymore anyways.

It was deffinantly still driveable.

Just sounds like someone tossed in a couple of stones.

I have the girdle unbolted, but i have no idea to get it off.

Pull it upwards, after you unbolt the pick-up from it.
