View Full Version : Is this Timing Chain Rattle?

Hey everyone. Just prior to pulling my 240 off the roads for the winter, I started to hear this rattling sound coming from what I thought was the timing chain. I have a redtop sr, just putting that out there for people who don't know.

I never got around to fixing it this winter, but I am prepared to go ahead with the fix. Ive heard remove the top guide and replace the tensioner with the revised one? Is this correct for the SR? I know about all the writeups for the KA, but is what I said above correct? Also, I took two videos of it and tried to capture the sound. Please give it a listen. Doesnt really occur during startup when it is cold outside. It really only appears when it is at normal operating temperature or if it is already a warm/hot day. Thanks. PS. It is really obvious on the video because i held it right up to the valve cover. Allbeit it is quite noticeable when revving it up a little bit and also letting it fall, it is harder to hear when idling except after it has warmed up.

i don't have experience with an sr

but that sounds similar to ka rattle

yours sounds a little worse though

take the valve cover off and see if the chain sags at all

take v/c off and check the timing chain plate for any kind of scoring but check to see if there is any slack. most people on this forum suggest taking the t/c plate off and that it doesn't serve a purpose. but you t/c could be fine but your tensioner has gone bad and they are known for going bad

hope this helps

All i hear is lifter tap.

Check oil pressure, and bleed HLA's

it sounds really bad because my camera amplified the sound a ton! im pretty sure my oil pressure is good, but my gauge went bad (stupid autometer). hmm. read another thread, and heard about the lashes but the vast majority of people said it wasnt them. I am going to go ahead and buy a new tensioner though. And if it was this "lifter tap", wouldnt it be extremely loud especially at startup?

So i completely forgot about checking this sound out with a stetho (aka my screw driver). checked the intake at idle and under a little rev and didnt hear the rattle through the screw driver. then put it on the front of the v/c and it was definitely audible.
