Hello everyone, tried to search but couldn't find a straight answer.

My s13 has a sr20det with a stock t25. In the last couple of days it started making a loud whining noise from the turbo, it only does it when it starts boosting and once gets passed 1lb of boost the noise disappears, it makes the noise under load when driving and in neutral too. Also it boosts normally until it hits max boost.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Cheers

So no smoke? Turbo's will whine all the time especially when boosting if its bad or going bad. Sure it's the turbo making the noise?

Ive owned this car for almost a year, the whine is definitely abnormal, and only occurs when it starts boosting, once it hits 2lbs and higher the loud whine disappears.

I revved the engine while standing under the hood and the noise seemed to come from the turbo area.

Well............................ummm.............. ..do you have a loud exhaust? you can't really boost while sitting there so maybe if you have a loud exhaust it drowns out the whine and you don't notice it. other than that i'm confusled

you have a hidden supercharger.

jk. this rarely happens but the turbine could be slightly rubbing on the housing, but like i said it rarely happens but it does. ur going to need a new one anyway. buy a new t28, rebuild the t25 as a spare when ur t28 goes out

Check the manifold to turbo gasket.

Check the manifold to turbo gasket.

Good thought. will do, manifold was changed recently actually, maybe they didnt tighten it well enough

pull intake off, rotate compressor wheel back and fro, up and down to see if you can feel... it hitting the housing taking note on the shaft play.

Check for exhaust leaks and boost leaks before you pull stuff apart.

If you don't find any then it is time to look closer.

I had a really weird "turbo whine" too that was making me insane trying to figure it out. Then i took the downpipe off and realized it had cracked near the welds. Welded it up never thinking that sound came from there and viola, it was gone. Really weird higher pitched sound for an exhaust leak.

Hey everyone, so i took off my turbo and it has lots of shaft play, so i replaced it with another T25 that my friend had laying around.

But now when it starts to boost car bogs down really hard? any clue what it could be? i think i connected everything back up correctly?

Thanks if advance

maybe boost leak somewhere. make sure all couplers are tight.

My turbo used to make a whinning sound and I had an exaust leak where the turbo bolts to the exhaust manifold.

Found the problem it was an intercooler pipe that was loose.

I drove the car and this turbo is garbage too :( you can hear it hitting the housing.

Could someone direct me to a rebuild kit for this t25 to fix the shaft play?

right when i read the title i was going to say your turbo has gone, but i was late.
and dont bother on rebuilding a t25 it would just be better to get a t28.

Im selling this car so there is no point for me getting an upgrade, Im trying to keep this as cost efficient as possible.

any links to the right rebuild kit?
