i bought my car with some five spoke ugly wheels that had been painted with what looks to be krylon rattle can black and the lip was taped to keep it silver. how should i try to remove the paint off and repaint the wheel with a black gloss or to just poweder coat?

i have a 1/4 die grinder and little money

Yup get the aerosol one. You can get it at autozone it's a blue and white can that says aircraft remover. It'll take the paint right off. Just don't get that stuff on your skin it burns!

^^^what he said, use gloves and be in a well ventilated area. apply and wait for the paint to bubble up then just wipe away, also i would avoid getting it on the tires.

remember to primer it afterwards as soon as possible cause things rust after you remove paint with aircraft or any type of paint remover... don't get it on anything plastic it eats away at some plastic things...

what if i paint the wheel after it drys after i clean it off? do i still have to primer it? also, what would be a pretty fuckin sweet color that i can use from a rattle can. i did a old pair of mr2 wheels in high gloss black and taped the lip off so that the aluminum was still showing. looked pretty flippin sweet. just wondering what other colors other people might have tried and like that i can get from auto zone, pep boys or advanced auto. this is a old set of wheels so its all fun.

any color you personally want and like would be a "pretty fucking sweet color"... i can't decide for you on that... after you remove the paint with that paint remover i recomend sanding the wheels primering them and then painting them so the paint actually sticks to the wheel... good prep equals good paint, ive rattle canned anything imaginable and never had anything CHIP or damage on me unless i get tired... it's all in the prep work, if you just paint them on bare metal the paint will most likely not stick... research a bit on this, there is a few guides online and even on here to help you out with painting and preping stuff for paint...

Don't forget to sand the wheels too, every inch, because it will flake every little place you don't sand.

search around... the are tons of online tutorials how to paint stuff... but i would sand it after removing the paint i would sand it with AT LEAST 320 maybe a bit more coarse...

I used a red scotch brite pad for sanding wheels. It's nice because it's flexible and you can get into all the nooks and crannies. I just painted my RPF1's last night, and we scuffed them, cleaned them, etch primed, based, pearled, and cleared. Good luck.

Depending on teh color you want to paint the wheels, you may just want to lightly sand them and paint over the black for a darker base coat. I use a paint remover called "Dad's". I found it at Walmart back in 97' and have been using it ever since.

But whatever you use WEAR GLOVES AND EYE PROTECTION!!! I was retarded and rubbed my eye when I was using it, not thinking....4 hours later in the ER I had the cleanest eyeball ever (ouch) :).

I also use this stuff with a brush. And powerwash away. Im waiting for the weather to get warmer to work on my wheels because it seems like this stuff does not work well in the cold..

i used the paint remover and i had ran out. yea it does seeem like it is a little harder to do when cold. i almost completed one wheel. i should have sprayed them one at a time instead of all at once. hear are the before and current pics of the wheels.

i decided im doing a sparkle red wheel and the lip black. should look good.
