As for recording vocals and instruments, I use Sony Acid Pro and Cool Edit Pro. For making beats, I have a
MIDI keyboard hooked up to my Mac, and I use FL Studio to organize it.

Since you're just starting out, Guitar Center has these good recording packages that include everything you
need to start doing what you want to do.

As for getting into the industry, that's pretty hard unless you are really good at what you do. A very powerful
tool to use to get your music out there is Myspace Music and YouTube. You will get many views and feedback
from just those 2 outlets alone.

Also, you can perform at "open mic" nights at different bars/lounges in your area.

What kind of music you aiming for?

I heard my name and saw mention of my 2 preferred weapon of choice (and one more that I use from time to time, in Acid)...
PM me and I will get back at you after I finish at the gym and feed my face.

Another note, don't worry about getting gigs for now. Learn the basics of how to make/record music first.
Getting feedback is huge. You don't want to be out at a performance and then have the people boo you.
Make a simple demo song, make copies of it on CD, pass them out to your friends and family and tell them
to spread by word of mouth.

what's worked for my band is just going to shows and talking to the bands and people who organize the shows then giving those people our demo and what not... that and myspace whoring.

what kind of music you want to do? I have an uncle in San Fransisco that has his own studio but haven't talked to him in like 5 years.
