Hey,

I'm putting back together my SR20DET, with an 87mm/1.1mm apexi HG. I just finished getting the head milled, and i scrubbed the block with steel wool and WD-40. I wiped the block, and blew the crap out of all the passages with an air compressor. Is there anything else I need to do before reassembly?

Is this correct:

Place HG on block
Place Dowel pins on block
Place head on HG
Install ARP headstuds finger tight
Tighten ARP headstuds in steps to 75 ft-lbs as per FSM

Also, are these the dowel pins that go in the block on each corner?

Finally, is this a problem?

you have to follow the arp instruction. first, hand tight the stud to the block then apply the lube to the stud tip and torqe the nut. mine say 80ft-lbs in 3 step

My arp instructions said 105 with lube. Why are all your pistons down. Did you not take it off at TDC? Those do look like the pins but mine didnt fall out.

Doh...

Why did you get the head milled and not the block? Steel wool won't do shit.

took it off at tdc, moved it down to fill the pistons with rags, will move back to tdc on reassembly

steel wool cleans it, i don't have a hoist to pull the engine, that's a ridiculous amount of work for a hg job

reassembled, checked compression without starting (I haven't attached the manifolds yet)

compression is 90/70/70/150.

great.

buy a new headgasket, and get the BLOCK decked along with the head this time.

both sides have to seal, so when you only got the head decked, you half assed the install.

then follow arp specs for headstuds

the machine shop set the lifters on their side, not in oil.

my gut feel is that this is the problem. fingers crossed.

Doubt it.

The main problem with improperly bled lifters is noise. They don't effect your compression.

With those kind of numbers either the pistons were installed improperly or you're not performing the test correctly.

Or your valves are fucked.

If that is the case you could start it up and see what happens. I am doing the same thing you are, but I have to wait for my cams to come in. And I dont think you need the block decked, countless people didnt do it.

So, that steel wool really cleaned it...

Yeah, the Block is not a clean surface. You can see the old HG.

Did you check the deck to see if it was level and square to the bore? I bet the head and block warped over time together. Which is fine till you try to deck one without the other.

I am guessing you didnt do a wet compression test before disassembily and just hoped the head gasket was your problem with low compression.. I would be afraid of steel wool getting into the oil and coolant passages, ive always used a gasket scraper and went over it with an oily green scrubby pad

So how did this end up? In the FSM it says the lifters cant be bleed with the engine running, but I want to know what happen.

This was the issue. I started it up, let it idle for 10 seconds, shut down. Compression tested at 170/165/160/170

You should probably avoid guides on NICO. Even though they may be right...it's still NICO.

EDIT - Glanced his block rebuild. Seems like he knows what he is talking about.
