View Full Version : HLSD vs. 2-way?

I have a Kaaz 2-way, and I'm tired of the clunking, as well as the really high gear ratio.

Is this a good idea:

eBay Motors: Nissan S15 LSD Silvia Helical fits: S13 S14 200SX 240SX (item 200279823757 end time Nov-30-08 21:34:11 PST) (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissan-S15-LSD-Silvia-Helical-fits-S13-S14-200SX-240SX_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3 a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q 2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem200279823757QQitemZ2002798237 57QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories)

I'll need a ring/pinion set, but what else?

How does the Kaaz change your gear ratio and why would you need a ring/pinion for the HLSD?

It doesn't.

Your final drive is what determines your gear ratio.

If he used the stock R/P then it is the same FD.

What is the car being used for?

if the car is being used for mainly drfiting or drag, keep the kaaz, or go to a nismo for a little less noise.

If you're just street driving it or doing grip, you can get the hlsd, but you will also need output shafts and the bolts to attatch the ring gear to the hlsd. They are 13mm shank vs the stock 12mm iirc.

i'd actully go with the r200 diff for any of the above statements that diff has been proven over and over again to hold up to anything you through at it its seen upwards of 700+rwhp in a few drag cars i've seen and the best part is that you don't get the nosie you were complaining about so good luck i also agree with the previous statements that your gear ratio shouldn't have changed if you have the stock R/P in there

Ummm....all 240s use a R200 diff? R200 is also used in several other Nissan cars, I don't know exactly what you're talking about - the Nismo/Kaaz/Tomei/etc are all R200 diffs.

To get to the actual question though, it really depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If you're doing grip driving you probably wouldn't have selected the 2-way to begin with. If your drifting then you either have to put up with the noise....run some realllllllllllllly thick fluid, or spend 1300 bucks on a OS-Giken 1.5 way diff. They're supposed to be run w/ 80W-240 fluid and make no noise at all. Mine makes some minor clunking because I couldn't find any fluid that thick. I'm in the process of ordering the fluid it needs.

Otherwise the HLSD could be an alternative, but is really not beefy enough/really made to hold up in continuous drifting situations - a lot like the VLSD. If you're only drifting occasionally then it is something to consider for sure.

i heard that you can use vlsd but its either a thicker or lighter oil
n the diff that makes it lock up faster.
but unless you want to waste the time find another 240 in the junk
and buy the diff and weld it
and switch it out whenever ou want to use it

You can't really change the fluid in a vlsd.

Oh Lord, there's a lot going on in this thread so I'll try to sort out everything.

I have a Kaaz 2-way, and I'm tired of the clunking

There's really nothing you can do about it. A full 2-way is going to make some noise. Just make sure you break it in correctly and use the correctly fluid recommended by Kaaz. Give it about 5k miles and it should be less noisy.

It's ok. Depending on what ring you have, you may have to drill the ring out to 12mm or use centering washers. The S15 diff is 13mm and all 240s are 12mm ring bolts.

I'll need a ring/pinion set, but what else?

Honestly I don't know if your current output shafts will fit. You will probably need to get LSD output shafts if you want to keep your 6bolt axles.

Correct.

Correct. As said above, all 240s use 12mm ring bolts. S15s use 13mm ring bolts. Trying to use 12mm bolts on the S15 diff is like throwing a hot dog down a hallway.

While most of this is opinion, I also tend to agree. My R200 has been very good in terms of taking the torque I throw at it.

Yes, all cars carrying the 240SX marque use R200.

R200 is also used in several other Nissan cars

Correct.

I don't know either.
