getting a new set of wheels and shopping around for drag radials. as you guys will know, drag radials come very limited in sizes, especially for 17". right now im leaning towards MT Street Drag radials, just wondering if anyone else uses drag radials on 17x8 wheels and what size you use

Let's put it this way.

The V8 3rd gen F-Body (Camaro/Firebird) comes from the factory with 16x8 wheels, and come with 245/45/16 tires.

The most popular upgrade for them is to go up to 17x9 wheels, with 275/40/17.

So.

Go look at those wheel and tire combos and see if you really want that much bulge on your own setup.

ive seen them on an 8in rim but they do bulge out quite a bit... a 9in rim would be perfect for that tire on a drag setup...

Remember, it's the sidewall flex that gives a drag tire traction, more than the actual width of the tire, thus a 15" diameter wheel + mega sidewalls on a drag radial will give you much more grip off the line than a 17" rim w/ a drag radial with less sidewall.

well, the wheels are already on the way. what i originally wanted was like a 255 but they dont have those for drag radials. it jumps from 205 to 275

Both of those sizes are better on your 17x8 wheels.

Not really sure how you couldn't find any drag radials in between a 205 and a 275, but you didn't look hard enough.

How do the Nitto's compare to BFG and MT drag radials? Ive heard so many good things about MT's and thats the tire i was going for.

my friend has a mustang with 275's on a 17x8 it looks disgusting (to me) but it does physically fit... however like everyone is saying more sidewall, better launch, etc. do more research

I can't tell you much about a comparo between those tires, because back when I used to drag race and cared, people were saying the BFG drag radial (the original ones, not the drag radial 2s) were hooking up better than the Nittos.

I have also heard Mickey Thompson street radials were good, but then again, I haven't kept up with any of that stuff.

At this point, you're better off finding a drag radial that will fit your rims better if you're dead set on those set of rims.

When there comes a time when your tire becomes the only thing between you and a faster time, then worry about getting a bigger wheel so you can fit the stickier tires on there... but then again, if you're getting to that stage, you might as well get some 15s because 17s don't give you a whole lot of sidewall.
