Whip it out the window and buy another one!

SexPanda

Does it get online?
Check
Does it have msn messenger?
Check *(gotta download it)
Does it run MS programs like Word, Spreadsheet, etc?
Check
Can you play music?
Check

SO basically... A computer is a computer to me. But thats because all I do is get on zilvia, buy car parts, look at porn, and type up my manifesto so that when I bomb abortion clinics and get caught they'll know why

Everyone on Zilvia is arguing "OS X sucks!" "No! Windows sucks!" when in reality they both suck. I've been using Linux for the past two and a half years and haven't had Windows on any of my personal machines. As for laptop quality, stick with decent brands like Lenovo and you won't have any issues.

Arch Linux (or Arch) is an operating system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system) intended to be lightweight and simple.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_linux#cite_note-0) The design approach of the development team focuses on "simplicity", elegance, code correctness and minimalism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimalism_%28computing%29).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_linux#cite_note-1) "Simplicity", according to Arch, is defined as "...without unnecessary additions, modifications, or complications.." and is defined from a developer standpoint, rather than a user standpoint.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_linux#cite_note-2)

FreeBSD has been characterized as "the unknown giant among free operating systems."[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeBSD#cite_note-whyfreebsd-1) It is not a clone of UNIX, but works like UNIX, with UNIX-compliant internals and system APIs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/API).[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeBSD#cite_note-2) FreeBSD is generally regarded as reliable and robust. Among all operating systems which can accurately report uptime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uptime) remotely,[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeBSD#cite_note-3) FreeBSD is the free operating system listed most often in Netcraft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netcraft)'s list[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeBSD#cite_note-uptime-4) of the 50 web servers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_server) with the longest uptime. A long uptime also indicates no crashes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crash_%28computing%29) have occurred and no kernel updates have been deemed needed, since installing a new kernel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel_%28computer_science%29) requires a reboot, resetting the uptime counter of the system.

NetBSD, like its sister project FreeBSD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeBSD), was originally derived from the 4.3BSD release from the Computer Systems Research Group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Systems_Research_Group) of the University of California, Berkeley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_California,_Berkeley), via the Networking/2 and 386BSD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/386BSD) releases. The project began as a result of frustration within the 386BSD developer community with the pace and direction of the operating system's development. The four founders of the NetBSD project, Chris Demetriou (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chris_Demetriou&action=edit&redlink=1), Theo de Raadt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theo_de_Raadt), Adam Glass (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Adam_Glass&action=edit&redlink=1) and Charles Hannum (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charles_Hannum&action=edit&redlink=1), felt that a more open development model would be beneficial to the project; one which was centered on portable, clean, correct code. Their aim was to produce a unified, multi-platform, production-quality, BSD-based operating system.

There is much much much more out there besides OS X/Windows. Look into them someday! Learning them is ultra addictive. I'm actually on the patch right now. :hsdance:

Please don't give me that "UGH BUT I CAN'T PLAY GAME X!!!" crap. By this point in your life you should be focusing on bigger things. I won't lie I'm a gamer, but all of my games are native and I rarely play as it is.

No, you cannot use MS Word et al. but there are tons of substitutions. Yes you can have a fully operational desktop to browse the internet, check e-mail, chat, play (some) games, photoshop (with GIMP), write documents (OpenOffice, Abiword, etc), create spreadsheets (OpenOffice, Gnumeric, etc), run servers, program, watch videos, listen to music and convince people that you are a hacker.

There are some VERY easy distributions to use though such as Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, etc. Unless you love the high prices of Macs or love the bugginess of Windows then there is really no reason to not at least try them. I'd probably using OS X if I weren't such a cheapass. I refuse to spend >$500 on a laptop. :wan:

Haha, its funny to see Apple flipflopping over the years. "Our processors are superior to Intel blah blah blah." Few years later, "Yeah....we're gonna switch to Intel." And "Our OS is superior to all blah blah blah", few years later they're running on a modified BSD core (witch is a modified Unix platform). What does Apple actually BUILD? As far as I know they outsource a lot of their manufacturing, so really they just know how to package things. Their processors, hard drives, video cards, monitors, etc. are made by other companies.

lflkajfj12123
10-21-2008, 01:20 PM
yes if they made everything then it would be a monopoly

they use quality parts that's all

and yeah they do outsource their manufacturing but atleast they don't outsource everything else like phone support

Still rather have my 2.66GHz OC'ed to 3.8GHz quad core running vista 64 PC. [hides]

that is definetly a sweet setup but i don't really have the need for the speeds like that anymore i used to do the same thing when i played video games and was doing little video editing shit for skateboarding but thats it

the macbook is fast enough to handle the occasional high demand programs that i might use

it is also the best looking laptop imo is light, strong, and does just what i need it to do

it was a good choice for what i need to use it for right now

I'm just saying, people act like what your getting is something that is totally 100% unique. Apple is smart with their focus on ergonomics and user interfaces. They have a good marketing and hold a tight control over their distribution (as to keep prices in check). And it is smart that they haven't outsourced their tech support to the middle east. Thats what they do best.

linux is a name for the open-source version of the UNIX operating system

mac osx is unix based, windows is not

there are many free distributions of linux released by groups who design them with the open source code

open source allows for free; operating systems, development, customization

which the linux groups have strong community and are enthusiastic about further developing their os to share

a few examples of linux is ubuntu, archlinux, redhat

few things.
theres really no such thing as a "mac" or "pc" anymore. They run the same hardware. THE EXACT FUCKING SAME.

Anyone who is bitching about Vista being unstable either:
1. hasn't updated their video drivers (over 70% of vista crashes were due to nvidias shitty forceware drivers. nothing to do with the OS)
2. hasnt used it.

This machine has been on for at least 3 weeks. I've played games, watched movies, torrented hella stuff. no problem.

macs are overpriced. this is easy to see now, when you can have a dell, or lenovo laptop with the exact same specs (down to part numbers) for literally half as much.

The OS is ok, but its not hard when you only have to support about 90 different software packages, as opposed to the sheer amount of applications available for the Windows PC market.

also, most mac users i've met are elitist for no reason what so ever. its like they're proud they overpaid for an underperforming peice of pretty aluminum and glass.

^^I call bs on that last one, vista for me devlops weird ass problems. for instance my network and sharing center doesnt exist anymore. It just says server execution failed, network status unknown. The network and sharing center freezes up everytiime it gets opened.

My tabs on IE7 get sometimes just say connecting and never open. Sometimes the window doesnt close, and you have to use task manager to close it.

My gf's laptop and her sisters closing one windown in IE7 will partially close all of them. (as in they all start to close, then freeze up and get stuck)

I have updated all the drivers on my desktop and gf's laptop.

Pank

I've used Vista at work constantly, as well as my machines at home, and i've never run into that problem. do you have any ACTUAL security software running? These machines aren't macs, you have to actively protect them from dickheads. Thats the price you pay for functionality.

Why is it that Windows users are always on the defense?
That is so true. The only people I really see making a point and getting
all worked up, are PC owners.

I do not have a Mac, btw.

wow throw back, mad props lol
It's photoshopped. ;)

few things.
theres really no such thing as a "mac" or "pc" anymore.

The OS is ok, but its not hard when you only have to support about 90 different software packages, as opposed to the sheer amount of applications available for the Windows PC market.

also, most mac users i've met are elitist for no reason what so ever. its like they're proud they overpaid for an underperforming peice of pretty aluminum and glass.

funny thing is i used vista since they released it in beta

i never had any problems besides with an old gamepad driver that was the only thing that i ever had a problem after using it for like 3 years i think now?

i did not switch because vista is so "shitty" i'm actually vm'ing vista on the macbook

oh yeah

also for those dickheads trying to mess with your pc lmao

i never ran any antivirus or firewalls after windows xp

there is no need and if you get a virus you're probably just an idiot

and yes i'd rather have a macbook for the looks than a lenova

seriously this notebook looks and feels amazing and it is built exactly how it appears

it had better feel great, for the price.
i've got nothing against either machine. PC's are prone to instability due to the insanely massive range of hardware and applications that windows has to support. Macs have a limited amount of hardware options that they need to support. nothing bad about it, its just how it is.

the fact remains that PC's control the VAST majority of the desktop market, and support more hardware (although that gap is rapidly shrinking, since there arent powerpc macs anymore).

that being said, i work on both of them all day long, so i pretty much hate ALL computers, since all they do is annoy the fuck out of me. (well....the users do more than the computers)

there is no need and if you get a virus you're probably just an idiot

unless you connect to an access point thats not yours. or someone connects to yours. or you view a jpg. or a mpg. you can embed bad code in almost fucking anything.

So other than the Bloatware Purdy interface. What is so great about Vista over XP? How is it an improvement?

Vista = Resources down the drainnnn!

XP = a lot more fluid without the funk and weight.

Macs are nice as shit, but not 3K nice. For that price, i'd expect at LEAST a ZJ.

from what I read, nothing. Just a few new mac-borrowed functions, and it looks pretty.

vista may be slow and buggy, but these are minor quirks compared to the price diff. If i had a mac, it would prolly be near 4.5K. Since it has a 2.2 quad core processor, with 3 gbs of ram installed and 500gb HD. thats an s14 and an rb25

If you believe that I have a radio tower in Paris and a Bridge in Brooklyn to sell you...

I work with some of the most technically inept people I have ever met and they use Macs.

But hold onto you stereotypes, show's how informed you are... :ugh:

I got crazy... I have both. So when my PC fucks up (often) I can go to my Mac. When my Mac fucks up (rarely) I can go to my PC... Since nowadays almost all shit is cross compatible for the most part.

If both fuck up? I cry and throw stuff. Most of the time I'm on my PC since it's my laptop and my Mac is my desktop.
