View Full Version : Who gives money to the homeless?

So ya just wondering how many people give money to the homeless. I usually tend to give them like a buck twenty five if they dont look like they have a bottle of liquor on the side or on some drug stuff. I usually tend to give them only to the ones that are not aggressive as to them going by your damn door and staring at ya for a damn nickel. In the end though i do it cause you help em out and it makes you feel good. Plus I think that if you give you will also get back when you really need it. Who agrees?

i always give them a cigarette.

they usually appreciate it a lot and makes me feel good.

one lady, however, decided she would complain about how she doesn't smoke and acted like it was her right to bitch about me offering her a FREE cigarette.

yea i don't get it.

Haha this one time a guy asked my dad if he could buy a cigarette from him, and my dad was like, "here have one for free." Then the guy asks "can i have a couple more?"

My dad comes back over to where i am and he's says "n****s aint shit" and my sister and i pretty much died laughing.

As far as giving money to the homeless, i've seen way too many people beg for money right in front of the day laborer waiting area, or turn down job offers from people in cars.

If i give to charity, it's gonna be through a trusted organization. Or i'll just help out the broke mofos in my family.

i used to carry around bottles of water in my camera bag, and i'd give those away. but ive had them thrown back at me before. :keke:

so now, i only give change away. and its only when im buzzed up and they make me laugh. for example, one dude was waiting outside a bar in detroit one night. a few of my buddies and i were drinking some beers, getting all sauced up. upon leaving, we were confronted by this homeless dude. he stopped all of us in a group and said, "i have a question for yall." "whats the greatest nation in the world?" we all said this one, usa ofcourse. he smiled, tipped his hat off, and said: "Do-nation." at the time, it was hilarious. i think he got like $10 from all of us together. i appreciated that. usually these guys give us "advice", and then expect money for it. lol, seriously. "this a bad neighborhood fellas." "you should toss me a few bucks, im just lookin' out for yall." pfffft, i know where im at.

depends where the homeless is at... and if the look legit too...

some of these guys in Down Town San Diego make like $100-$200 an hour! so I pretty much don't bother.

And Detroit has an abundance of homeless too. One time this dude said he can rap and if I like his rap asked if I can donate some money to him. His shit was whack and then when he was done he actually asked for $20. I ROFL. I told him to GTFOH.

I usually give em all the change in my pocket. I look at it this way. Some of them get where they are from their own stupidity, others thru unfortunate occurances. It's not good to support drinking/drugs and shit like that, but when your at the bottom of the barrel and that's all you look forward to. Fuck it, I still give em change. If that makes sense.

Fuck bums. I get into it alot with them. I never carry cash so when they ask me, I honestly feel bad saying no but its the truth. I work in LA so if i encounter one while I'm at lunch they see me in a shirt and tie and think I must carry wads of cash and when I tell them no, there's been a few instances where they start cussing me out. Fuck that.
1. It's not my fault you failed in life.
2. Go try to earn money in a decent way. Selling oranges, flowers, fruit, corn, ice cream. Fucking hold up a sign for 10 dollars an hour. Fuck that...
3. I'd rather support starving people in another part of the world...

I do this too, when I come out of work there are usually 2 or 3 homeless guys that I run into while I'm walking back to my car. I take cake and stuff like that from work and give it to them. The ones who scarf that shit down immediately I know are the ones who are for real. There is this one guy who inhales the cake every time I give it to him, and I have given him change a couple of times.

You know what i know you guys gonna give me shit for this but:

Fuck that hell no i don't, I believe that most of them did that shit to themselves so why should i help them get a beer or some drugs when that's what fucked them up in the first place???

Even Gambling too....

I dont give money to them, I dont care how deep their fake story is....

I had one bum though i was coming out the liquor store with a few cases and he ask me for a dollar for a beer so i just gave him a beer...

Brian

Sometimes I do.
It is never anything more than coin change though.
I gave 75 cents or so to a guy not too long ago and then he said, damn! i only wanted a quarter.
so i told him to keep it and maybe one day if I need some money, somebody will give me some.

So you have homeless people hanging outside your house? Do they fuck with your car and stuff? The reason I'm asking is cause my town is debating ruining itself by building a shelter and low-cost housing literally down the street.

To be on topic, when I go to NY I usually just say I don't carry change. I really just can't think of them as anything other than lazy. They are always hanging around Penn station yelling shit and acting messed up, why would I give them my money?

I have conflicting feelings about the homeless/bums.

1. I do NOT feel bad because, hey, pick up your ass and get some kind of job. I bet you could find SOMETHING. It might not be overnight, but over time, they will find something.

2. I DO feel bad sometimes for them because It seems that the ones that are "crazy" are sort of that way, not really because they want to be. I had a guest lecturer (spelling) and he was telling us all about some of the homeless in San Fran. Tons of them would just shout out loud in random public places. Outisde/church/stores. Well, I guess he did a lot of work with these homeless folks and it seems that they actually feel invisible. They are out there everyday asking for money, but people just ignore them day after day after day... year after year. So finally, they seriously begin to think they don't really "exist". They are talking to people, but the people don't talk back. They feel invisible.

I'm sick right now. ugh

when i was young like around 8-10 years old..i would give them some pennies.. but now i say screw them.. they had their chance and chose not to work and/or became a drunk/drug addict.. i hate the ones on the fucking train going to each car begging for money.. they smell like shit..and when they do it during rush hour bumping into people..its just nasty as fuck..

i once went to cali and this homeless motherfucker asks my friend for a dollar and she gave him one..the asshole had the right to ask for another dollar..his explanation was..burgers costs more than a dollar.. wtf..cali homeless people are nuts.. they follow your ass around begging you for more once youve given them change..

I live in downtown (LA), and I've noticed that a lot of homeless dudes literally just want to talk. Like, if you acknowledge them, they'll talk to you for a few minutes and then be like "cool have a good night" (or whatever), and walk away.

THEN there's those homeless guys in Little Tokyo that will swarm if you give one money. That's some crazy shit.

If I actually have change, hell yea I give it to them. Also, for those pessimistic people, whenever I have food and I'm in an area with a lot of homeless people, I almost always get asked if they can have some food rather than for money.

wtf..cali homeless people are nuts.. they follow your ass around begging you for more once youve given them change..

Annnnnd lastly, if anyone lives in Los Angeles, ask your grandparents (if they're not dead, sorry) about homeless people prior to the closure of all the hospitals and work farms in Los Angeles.

i usually whats in my ashtray if it gets filled with loose change by freeway on ramps... Ive once seen 2 bums almost fight for the freeway offramp spot *one guy was chillen there, while another bum walked up and was like "Thats my spot".

There was this one dude that was always at teh gas station who would ask for change, and if you didnt give it to him, he would be like "screw you i fought for this nation during vietnam and this is how you repay me?". Sucks but true, shit i get scared when they snap back at you.

i dont give out money, not even change. if they want money, they can work for it. there are TONS of recycleable material waiting to be turned in if you look for them. people that hang out in a certain area everyday asking for change = too lazy.
and just in case you didn't know. there are many many crooks out there pretending to be homeless and they can make hundreds A DAY. so screw them and sorry for their misfortune.

It really depends on the situation... There was one guy who used to sit on one of the freeway offramps in North Long Beach. He was a cool ass dude. His name a TJ, and he had a sweet little dog named Muttley. I was coming out of the Taco Bell by the exit ramp once, and he approached me. In a very kind voice, he said, "excuse me, I hate to be a bother, but could you help me out? My dog here is hungry, and the people in Food For Less won't let me in to get food."
So he told me what to get (something similar to peanut butter crunch, with milk, iirc), and I went in and bought it for him. I guess it was the the cheapest type of meal that both he and the dog could share. He was a cool guy though, I talked to him alot.
Last I heard, he was in the hospital because he was bitten on the leg by a brown recluse and it got really infected, so some other homeless dude was taking care of Muttley.

But on the whole... FUCK the homeless people. Bunch of fucking rude ass beggers and drug addicts. Last week, I was walking into the liquor store by my house, and a homeless woman says, "hey, spare some change?" I said, "sorry, don't have any change." So she says, "Oh, well do you have a dollar?" I stopped, and thinking I was smart, said, "No, I don't carry any cash or change." So the bitch says, "Oh, well can you charge something for me?"
I just shook my head and walked away.

There was this dude in Fontana we use to call fat Jesus. When he died Fox11 did a story about him. He got arrested a bunch of times for panhandling and other stuff but what was funny is that Fox showed this guy getting into a new 95 Silverado (at the time) and had a nice house and everything. I almost died laughing because I thought Fat Jeses lived in a van down by the river.

Or those bums you sometimes see at the side of the road and you see some type of car across from it, makes you wonder :-/. Same friend told me that he saw a mercedes across from a bum he saw once.

There also was this one time when I use to work at carls jr when I was 16. I was walking back from the local 7-11 because I bought my lunch there, and this bum comes up to me and asks if I can get him a free burger. I told him that we aren't allowed to do that, then he starts yelling at me why I can't give him a burger, that he would give me food if I was in need, and says something about giving things away if im christian. Anyways I was scared shitless because I was so young and he was some burly old dude, I ended up giving him my lunch. He didn't even say thank you or anything, and come to think of it he didn't even ask if I could share my food. If I could go back in time I seriously would of handle that situation so much differently...

Include in your brilliant career planning for these people the serious mental illness part. Schizophrenia is brain damage. It wipes out huge areas that you need to live your life. Yeah if *you* were homeless you could sit in an interview and get a job. A schizophrenic can't. Check out a schizophrenia simulator

Janssen: Exclusively Dedicated to Mental Health (http://www.janssen.com/janssen/mindstorm_video.html)

It simulates just the hallucinations. You can't simulate the other stuff - the delusions, the confused thinking or the damage in the frontal lobes that hammers the ability to organize and plan.

there was a guy that tried to get monies from myself and a friend one night. it was awesome. he was like, "first of all, i am homeless. but i aint a lazy ass bum like the rest of these guys askin' for money." he had a bag full of cheap cell phone covers/cases he wanted to sell us. i dont generally carry cash, otherwise i would have prob bought one from the guy on principle alone. even though, i sell cheap phone cases. :keke: he said "i dont expect nothin' for free." i wish i had a $5 for the guy. i can appreciate an attitude like that.

another night, i observed a homeless guy approach a group of 3 guys. they were all 3 just coming out of the casino, and they were shitfaced. the homeless guy asked if they could spare some change, and the guys COMPLETELY turned it around on him. the homelees guy had on what appeared to be a silk dress shirt. one of the 3 drunk guys said something like, "thats a real nice shirt? where did you get it?" then the other 2 joined in. "yeah, that IS nice." "damn man, we should be askin' you for money. that is one sharp ass shirt!" "you're dressed nicer than i am." the homeless guy couldnt come up with anything. he was speechless. it was brilliant! i was laughing my ass off. funniest shit ive ever seen.

Actually i dont think they make hundreds. Many of them sadly waste the money on drugs/alcohol. I still feel bad for some of them though so i give some spare change. Not like a buck is going to make em wealthy at all. They just live day by day not knowing if theyre going to wake up the next day. Its pretty sad. They are brilliant, true sales people getting money the easiest way possible. I do NOT give them money at all! I feel that if people stop giving them money then they might actually go and get a job to support themselves or their habits.

i usually do give my change to homeless people on the street, if i have any change to give them.

aside from this, I've started this idea a couple christmas' ago that instead of buying gifts for my family that they really don't need, I save and buy gifts for the homeless instead. I've already given them a heads up so they know not to expect anything from me. Instead what i do is call up the local homeless shelters, get an estimate of how many women and children occupy the facility and then i buy the gifts accordingly.

Last xmas i made about 50 gift bags for the homeless women containing womanly necessities and then i set up about 100 boxes of crayons and coloring books and sketch books for the children to inspire the creative minds that children naturally have.

this year, I am still planning it out... I would like to provide them with clean warm blankets and other things... something useful for sure.

Yeah true. I'm not saying I would do it though. Lol... I'd just rather waste 15 bucks on a claw machine like I did today at Six Flags...

On a positive note, I do recall this one time we went to lunch and were confronted by a bum outside the restaurant... So this guy tells one of my buddies, "I'll bet you a dollar I can tell you where you got your shoes" so my buddy says, "Fuck it, go for it. I didn't get them anywhere in this country so good luck." The bum says "That doesn't matter to me because right now, you got them on your feet." Ha!
We were rolling so we gave him a buck... Bastards are getting creative...

honestly I got pissed off at a guy...

so i went ot mcdonalds bout 2-3 years ago...and this bum out side was like, can u spare change,, honestly i didnt have any (paying wiht debit)

i felt bad so i went out of my way to buy him a breakfast meal with Oj

i go outside , give him the food and tell him sorry no change but heres breakfast on me...he takes , doesnt thank me, i walk away....from my rear view mirror i see this motherfucker throw the food in the trash can...oj and all...

4 days later, same mcdee's, same MF, asked me for some change, i just ignored him, i had cash and asked for 2 dollars in quarters, i made sure that MF heard my shit...and ignored him...

the only homeless i help out are those who ask for food,if im walking out of a restaurant and he askedme for my leftovers, obviously ill be like sure since i usually dont eat it...and then i give themn like 2 bucks for a drink and tell them here buy urself something to drink, one guy teared up on me, which was crazy...

but others though, who i offer my food to, bitch out and ask for money, fuck em i say... help those who want food...and not the ones asking for money

A pretty large proportion of the homeless population suffers from mental illness. It's a bad situation...we don't institutionalize mentally ill people like we used to, but now there are just a lot of them wandering around homeless, not getting the care they need.

Exactly. Ever see the homeless who talk to themselves or to inanimate
objects, such as poles or fire hydrants? Sad...

Theres this one bum around my neighborhood which i had a good conversation with one day, its the least i could of done. He told me a story of Hitlers hidden treasure that he was looking for. I was like "ok" "hope you find it" He didnt ask me for money or anything but this guy was all bones, so i gave him my lunch when i was starving. I feel really sorry for the guy.

I'll give bums money if they ask politely. If they're homeless haight street type kids who say "give me change" or ask for random amounts like "do you have .86 cents?," I walk by. I also give them cigarettes if I don't have change.

One time I was at 1984, which is on Folsom in SOMA (at the time it was nothing but warehouses), and some crackhead asked me for change, so I gave him a cigarette. He kept coming back to ask for more, and I was talking to a girl, so I asked him what he wanted to buy. He said crack, and I asked how much he needed and he said 5 bucks. I took out a five and said "I'll give this to you, but you have to run to get the rock." He took it and ran all the way down the street, and the blocks in South of Market are really, really long. The nuisance value was well worth getting him out of my face.

That was my cruelest story, but my friends are worse. One time my friend was giving this bum dollars for doing backflips. Only thing was, he kept landing on his face. At that same party, my other friend puked on a carpet and the girl who lived there put it in the street and 1 minute later another crackhead came and picked it up and walked away.

I have only given money to a homeless guy one time. Back when in the summer before I went to college, A girl who I made a slave to my dick, took me to the Sundial in ATL. Well we run out of money for a taxi after we get out of the resturant and the place where we parked our car was right around the corner.

So we decided to walk. Yea we got lost. We walked around for about 30 min before we found a map of the city on the side of a building. We were trying to remember the street the car was one, when a homeless guy approaches us.

He says he will lead us back to where we need to go. Being dumbasses, we all follow him. Me and the other guy in my lil entourage walk up front with the homeless guy, and the two girls stay in back.

While we walk she calls me and says how he could be leading us to our death and all types of shit like that. But me being the intelligent dumbass I was, figured that if the guy tried somethin I would beat his ass. Not thinkin of course he could have a knife or somethin on him. that and the guy that was with me was a sorry sack of shit.

While we walked there people standing on the street would be saying stuff to us. We all had dressed up to go to the resturant. I kinda expected that though, it was two white girls, a white guy, and a black guy all dressed up(I had forgot my shoes, so I was wearing a pair of black and white tims) being led around by some random homeless guys.

While we walked I saw for the first time in life a world I had only heard about on tv. I saw a homeless man, so dirty he looked almost brown, climb out of a wheel chair with no legs and lay down on a cement tree pot thing to sleep.

It tore my heart in a few places. There is alot of things in the world that I dont give a flying fuck about, but seein that mind even now almost makes me feel sick inside.

Despite the choices people made even one as cold as I dont want to see them suffer in such ways, unless of course they are biggots, pedophiles, rapissts, etc.

He eventually lead us back to the garage. When we got there, he said, "now I did something for you, now its time for you to do something for me" I gave him like 8 bucks cuz that was all I had left by then

One time my buddy and I were at a gas station , filling up on gas and a bum comes over asking for change. We were broke so we gave him some food that we had. He comes back to the pump and so we try to give him some food but instead he gives us the cold shoulder and asks the person next to us for a dollar. What a prick.

But , I do feel bad for the ones with mental illnesses. I see so many in Santa Monica and DTLA.

AMEN~ or in your case, NEMA.

Why do you have a dislike towards the lower case "t" as seen in your signature.

"t" is just a letter of the alphabet.

this reminds me of the time i tried to give money to a bum while driving. i was a stop light when the light started to turn red and i was at a intersection on the left lane closest to the curb. on that curb there was this bum and i decided to toss a dollar but it was kind of windy so i found those weight things (the ones that help balance tires) in my car and i wrapped the dollar around it so it wouldnt fly. i threw it at the bum and i accidentally hit his forehead then he got hella mad. without noticing it was a dollar, he picked it up and threw it back inside my car LOL.

other than that, i would rather contribute to organizations that wanna help people re initiate their lives after failing lol.

Homeless problem. Have prison inmates build homes for the homeless on Golf courses.

GOLF= Useless acres of space that could be used for housing and Drift tracks.

GOLF= Boring and waste of space. What kind of a game requires an area of 50 sports arenas.

Damn rich people. They are the cause of homelessness, that's the truth.

Rich people keeping the poor people where they are, the honest truth.

But if I was rich, i'd probably do the same.

when it comes to homeless people, if they are extremely rude or obnixous, i'll turn the other cheek. Every once in awhile, if i see someone truely pathetic, i'll spare some change if i got it. However homeless street preformers, depending on how good they are usually get some money from me. Oh man, i remember one day in Boston, in the subway, there was this homeless man playing "Rolling down the River" on his keyboard, he was so pathetic but he was trying so hard, he just kepy saying "Rolling down the River, ROll'N, ROLL'N, rolling down the river" over and over it was funny as hell. so i spared him a couple bucks

A country club where you can't accept tips? Fuck that go to the next closest one.
You'd probably double $10/hr if you were getting tipped there.

Its been a while since I saw a homeless person when I had some change. Most of them really are good people though. I'll help them out if I have some money to spare.

And its not my business what they do with their money, if they really need another beer or crack that bad whatever. Having an addiction doesn't make you a bad person or less needy than the next guy.

I don't; instead, I go buy them a sandwich and a bottle of water. No need to give them drug money to support their habit more.

thats what i do too.

Cant bums just get arrested or something so they have to struggle and get free food daily? You do loose freedom which in that case theres no point living.
