Not so fast, junior! Device will help parents limit teen drivers (http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/biztech/10/06/ford.teen.drivers.ap/index.html?eref=rss_us)

DETROIT (AP) -- Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will allow parents to limit the speed at which their teenage children drive their car.

The company will roll out a new feature on many 2010 models that can limit teen drivers to 80 mph (130 kph), using a computer chip in the key.

Parents in the United States, where most teens can get their drivers license at 16, also have the option of programming the car key to limit the audio system's volume, and to sound continuous alerts if the driver doesn't wear a seat belt.

"Our message to parents is, hey, we are providing you some conditions to give your new drivers that may allow you to feel a little more comfortable in giving them the car more often," said Jim Buczkowski, Ford's director of electronic and electrical systems engineering.

More than 5,000 U.S. teens die each year in car crashes. The rate of crashes, fatal and nonfatal, per mile driven for 16-year-old drivers is almost 10 times the rate for drivers ages 30 to 59, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The new feature, called "MyKey," will be standard on an unspecified number of Ford models when the 2010 cars and trucks come out late next summer. The feature will spread to the entire Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lineup as models are updated, spokesman Wes Sherwood said.

Ford arrived at the 80 mph (130 kph) limit even though freeway speed limits are lower in most states because it wanted to leave a margin in case an unusual situation arises, Buczkowski said. In some states, freeway speed limits are above 70 mph (112 kph), Sherwood said.

it would be better if i could set it to 70mph for myself and not have to worry about self control on my commute to work.

sound continuous alerts if the driver doesn't wear a seat belt.

My Friends CRV already does this. Heaven help you if you put something heavy in the front passenger seat.

I say let the little bastards have it, I dont see how wearing dark sunglasses, with a hood, and a seat reclined to its limits, and doing 70+ on a small town street at night makes you "cool"

I don't know why they didn't set it for 75mph, that is the fastest I have seen in the US.

Because if the rest of the traffic is going 80, your chances of causing and accident are greater.

Lol

Everything is bigger/faster/richer in TX

But I bet you they have less highway accidents than states with 60mph limit.

they can still do 80 in a 30.

stop throwing money at your kids and just take some time to teach them responsibility.

the freedom to choose between breaking the law or obeying it is awesome

if i'm forced to obey the law, and not just obey it because i choose to of my own free will, that is not very good.

i usually choose to break the speed limit though. hahahah

and my parents never let me borrow thier cars anyway. i had to buy my own car and that car had a primitive version of this thing ford is doing now. it's called "old car that doesn't go fast anyway"

Good thing its Ford. Most new drivers (girls and boys) always beg daddy and mommy for a MUSTANGGGGGG. So this is definitely good.

Although, I am glad I am not a kid anymore lolol sucks for them

hahaha i herd about that on TV today, idk you can kill yourself in cars at a lot of speeds and im sure dumb kids will drink and drive...i think it just makes the parents feel like there kid is safer but thats my 2 cents...and it makes the company look good "NEW SAFE CAR FOR YOUR KIDS ON SALE NOW!" -Ford (http://zilvia.net/f/#) Motor Co.-

But what parents would buy a new ford for their kid? Espically a ford, mostly it would be a old ass civic. I wouldnt buy my kid a brand new car from ford..
i started driving when im a sophmore :) now im a senior, i hate people who cant park at school. Espcially the guy with the mk3 supra who cant drive for shett.

What? Yours isn't broken?

actually.....I don't have one, in the first place :keke:. Actually I think they should have a device that would give them a slight shock for going over 75mph. You know like the Little Albert experiment? So every time they go over the speed limit with would subconciously fear to going over. lol jk

Yeah I was on the freeway today and guy merges and decides to go to my left lane even at like 50mph even though there was no cars on front of him. I give him a bad gesture and he gives me a bunch more. And another time I was driving my gf's car, I stop at a four way stop, I go and there is this civic barreling down the road. Person brakes hard, locks up, and skids pass the line and luckily I didn't go more than half-way or else we would of been T-boned. I honk at the person and person flipped me off? Now WTF is up with that? Getting mad even though its their fault. :squint:
