Just kidding its more like 30 steps, but what ever. Thought this might help most of you guys wanting to paint there own car. Now i am no professional and i do this in my backyard, but i get fairly decent results. So if you are a pro please chime in with any discrepancies. As i said i am not a pro so do this at your own risk. Im doind the whole car but so far only have finished the engine bay, interior and trunk. Anyway here goes...

What you need

spray gun
This is a widely debated subject there are many types available, i use a harbor frieght HVLP (high volume low pressure) special

Compressor
Also widely debated, just make sure its got enough cfm (air flow) to feed whatever fun you use

Sanding aparattus ( this means sand paper) you need a few different types including scuff pads ( these are some what like sponge pads with texture for sanding

Bondo , no body really uses bondo any more its really a plastic filler

Primers
I like two types
DTM direct to metal ( for bare metal)
And 2k primer (overall primer)

Paint and clear
I use urethane basecoat and clear coat.

First thing i do is gauge what i want to do with what im working with, IE any repairs and what not.

Here is my engine bay before (I started to take pics partway thru) so the narration might not match but you get the idea

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6123.jpg

I decided to stitchweld the engine bay and remove the battery tray, also to cut the front fenderwells and stretch them out to create more tire clearance also to cut the front fender areas out and weld panels in place to get rid of the holes

Sticth weld

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6118.jpg

Make sure to apply direct to metal primer, any where you have gone thru to bare metal

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6132.jpg

Next i welded these panels more for decoration than anything else, but maybe the would add support

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6190.jpg

Next i decided to change the radiator support, so i drilled out the spot welds and reinstalled a used one from the junkyard

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6268.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6271.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6277.jpg

I got tired of having clearance issues with the 265/275s up front and was to lazy to do a full front tub, so i cut the front fender well bent it forward added some metal then smoothed it, placed some filler and done. Have plenty of clearance now.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6320.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6321.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6325.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6326.jpg

Now onto filler, i am no expert on this stuff. I avoid using it when at all possible. Reason being is that in this area i struggle alot, it ussually takes me a few tries to get it right. Just follow the instructions on the can and you should be good

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6329.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6333.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6341.jpg

Ok at this point all repairs have been done and we are ready for primer.
What i like to do is scuff the surface very well with a 3m scuff pad. They have a few different types, I use here the red one which is the coarsest. The idea is to give the surface some texture for the primer to bite on to. For primer i used some dupont urethane 2k primer.

Here is the primer layed out

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6351.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6353.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6355.jpg

At this point you have your primer and it needs some sanding. You want to smooth out the surface as much as possible so the basecoat will go on flat. You want to wetsand this as it will make the process easier and save sand paper. Hopefully if you layed your primer flat enough you can start with a 320 gritt and sand everything you primed. If your doing an engine bay or something like that it gets to be really hard to get into those hard to reach places but do your best. After im done with the 320 grit i wet sand with a 600 grit to get the surface as flat as possible.

At this point your ready for paint.

For paint i chose to use duponts chromabase system. I purchase one gallon of chromabase basecoat. It is supposed to be reduced 1 to 1 so i also purchase one gallon of chromabase high temperature reducer. Reducer is sold by temperature ranges, its 95 degrees in miami, so i chose the high temp reducer. One gallon of paint once reduced turns into two gallon. In reality you probably only need two quarts ( reduced to one gallon) to paint a car, however i wanted to have extra paint as this is a race car and would probably get messed up. Also I purchased One gallon of dupont chroma clear with 1 quart of hardener. This is mixed 4 to 1. I also purchased one gallon of duponts final klean. This is a cleaner that you use right before you paint as to clean the surface. Heres a pic of all the products. Cost on these items is arount 550.00

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6349.jpg

First thing you want to do is blow the area your about to paint with air to remove any dust or debris. Then you wipe down the area your about to paint with the final klean. After your done you wipe up any residue with a clean rag.
This will be the last time your touching the surface with your hands other wise you will have to redo this procedure.

Well now your ready for paint, its best to do this in a enclosed enviroment but whatever i did it outside.

First you want to mix the base coat with the reducer remember to do it per the instructions recomended by the manufacturer.

first coat you want to spray very lightly your not looking for complete coverage you just want to get the surface wet for the subsquent coats.
Important is to pay attention to flash times, this is the time between coats. On the dupont paint its 10 minutes.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6356.jpg

Then most people will spray two coats, but i typiclly spray for coverage. As much paint as required to cover the surface. When spray mettalics its good to do a fog coat, like really fast about 18 inches off the surface just to even out the mettallics.

Here it is after coats two and three

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6357.jpg

Yuca saying oh snap that looks hot

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6358.jpg

Now at this point if you have no runs or drips your ready for your clear. You should wait at least 30-45 minutes to clear. The clear mixes 4 to 1. So you mix again per manufacutres directions and shoot. This stuff goes on pretty wet so becareful as to not get runs. The flast time for this is also ten minutes but i wait about 15-20 minutes to ensure its good and ready. I sprayed 3 coats of the clear. Here aree the pics spraying

first coat

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6360.jpg

second coat and third coat

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6361.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6364.jpg

Now you just sit and wait for it to dry. Typically you can handle it in 2-3 hours and its fully cured with in 24 hours.
Since this is the engine bay i will not be wetsanding and buffing it, i will cover that later as i do the rest of the car.

Heres pics of the finished product

nice work man;) i just glad someone else doesn't refer all body filler as freaking "BONDO". That just annoys me. Again nice work. Your someone i could trust helping me on my car if i needed a hand to get stuff done quick. Only thing is did u use all of the base in the engine compartment?? or for the whole car inside/out. 1:1 mixing ratio to make 2 gallons is whole shit load. You could do almost 2 1/2 fb 240sx with that. I only use half a gallon at a 4:1 mixing. got about 3 coats. I had to stretch it out alot and choosing a good color like midnight black helped also since my car was allready black.

i used 16 ozs of paint to do the engine bay, 3 coats 16ozs lol. I spilled more paint on the floor than i used to painit the engine bay.

Your right you could probably paint two s14s with the paint i bought, but i wanted to have extra since this is a race car i will be repainting peices in the future ha ha

wow really great work and ass for the engine bay and you saying your not gonna be wet sanding and buffing it still looks like a thousand dollar paint job from what i can see in the pics

now im kinda of a newbee at painting soo can you explain why you wet sand(and also what it is and for and what is used in the process) and buff as these are the only things im only kinda of not a 100% sure of but almost everything else i pretty dam sure i know really well.
maybe a few things here and there that the veteran painters could give me some insight and tips but other than that im pretty confident

Ive painted before but in my backyard. Small things , fenders, sideskirts, valences, bumpers etc. But i learned from reading the web and buying a gun and just spraying old panels and such.

Wow man, awesome color and props to doing it yourself.

The overs are glued onto the car at this point so they will be painted on the car.

lmao @ gastons face in the pic. You know what sucks about gsracer........hes doing this shit for fun and hes embarrassing people that do this for a living in the process

i apreaciate the kind words tj however this isnt rocket science if you can read instructions and can aquire the tools you can do this too. One thing you guys have that bodyshops dont is time. You can take your time and do it perfect, they have to move work in order to make money. Of course there are always exceptions, but you usually pay for it $$$. Im tend to get caught up in making things perfect only to realize half way that its a race car and im probably gonna break it anyway.

I got the to front fenders sanded today and ready for primer/sealer.

first some of the tools,

Sandpaper, if you need pics , step away from your car now please.

Dual action sander. Some of the pros can do the whole car with this and make the panels come out straight , but i have never tried. I used this to get the bulk of the material off then i do the rest by hand.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6389.jpg

Then this is the scuff pad, i use this for the hard to reach places and for a once over of everything before i spray the primer or basecoat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6403.jpg

Here you can see the panel beiing ready to be sanded. Its a good idea to purchase a pre cleaner from your local body shop supply store to clean the item you are sanding. Because if its dirty your only going to work the dirt/grease/wax etc into the pores of the item your painting and this can make things difficult later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6393.jpg

Here you can see the top part has been sanded. As i said before i use the DA only to get off the bulk of the material and then i hand sand from there.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6395.jpg

In this picture you can see the whole panel has been sanded. This is after DA and hand sanding. At this stage since this panel will be primed and sealead all i have used is 180 grit. This is just to give the sealer something to bite to. Later once the panel has been sealead and primed. I will wetsand to flatten the surface further.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6396.jpg

Here you can see the dull surface scuffed and sanded.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6397.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6399.jpg

This is a neat trick an old school body guy taught me, it helps give you an idea how straight the panel is. After the surface is nice and dull, pour some water on it, the water will film coat the panel and look just like clear has been sprayed on. It helps give you an idea where more work is required. However if you do this on bare metal take care to clean and prime it afterwards so as not to rust.

Read the products. the paint, clear, and primers will recommed "tip" sizes. Most of the Harbor Freight guns have a single tip and prob would do just fine for all materials.

gsracer is dead on. Just read the materials, and practice, practice, practice - its not too hard.

Great writeup and beautiful color choice.

As a side note.

I completly deplore the way the car is coming out. I say deplore because i dont have my thesarus handy and cant think up a stronger word than hate. This car is completly the opposite of what i wanted to build when i began this project. It has snoballed in to a wide body fiberglass hunk of i dont know what. Some of you may think it looks good, im on the fence about it. Once its done it will probably be up for sale.

Props for the paint job but I think I'm going to side with you on this one. Why did you do this to your car, it was sooooo beautiful! I love the clean OEM aero look you had before. Its the same look my car has!

secondly, why are you still going this way with it, you're obviously unhappy so WTF?

yeah I missed that, you mentioned something about replacing the radiator support with one from the junkyard, but then you painted the engine bay i did not see a new radiator support welded to the engine bay, figured that would've made sense to weld that on before re-painting the engine bay since you have to sand off the paint you laid to re weld that support on, and now risk weld scars/spatter getting on the paint you laid down in there already.

I may be completely off, but how was that approached?

nothing a razor blade and some paint thinner cant cure on that windsheild. i did the same thing but i masked it. what happened was when my car was in the booth the newspaper got ripped and over spray got on my car windows. i used a razor blade and some 800 grit to sharpen the blade to not make any scratches on my windsheild.

yeah I missed that, you mentioned something about replacing the radiator support with one from the junkyard, but then you painted the engine bay i did not see a new radiator support welded to the engine bay,

The lower portion of the radiator support was welded into place, but not the upper... the upper portion got completely cut off.

I paint for a living and it looks to be a decent job for being outside, with the heat out there im sure the flash off time for the paint and clear is super fast, so most stuff does not have time to stick to the clear and paint.
I know how you feel about the whole fiber glass issues, man I ended up doing the same thing to my coupe, going to far , everyone loves how it looks but i also am not happy and wish I kept it how it was. I dont care what anyone says I see paint and body work everyday eventhe best products that are FRP are janky in my book. Good luck with it man .

I didnt have any dust issues, as boosted98 said the temperature was so hot the paint flashed very fast. In fact the day i painted the temperature was about 100 even with the high temp hardner i had trouble getting the clear to flow.

And yes the windshield is cracked.... again.

As for the radiator support , i welded in the lower portion and made the upper portion removable as to make it easier to take the engine in and out. I will have the upper portion powder coated flat black.

hey i have a question bout air guns.

http://www.harborfreightusa.com/usa/itemdisplay/displayItem.do?itemid=47016

i just bought that air gun it doesn't say hlvp but, it does work my compressor it has the amount of cfm it needs.

it's 50-70 psi is this range to high for automotive paint? or it wouldn't matter?

i see that a lot of automotive spray hlvp guns are around the range of 40psi

would this make my gun useless for automotive paint?

thanks

there isn't a "HLVP"

Its either High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP)

OR

Low Volume High Pressure. (LVHP)

HVLP Spray Gun Setup (http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/HVLPspraygun.html)

I looked it up as I am looking for a gun too. Costco had a setup for $79 with both types of guns included I think. I was in a rush and will look at it this weekend.

It compares to the 43430 and 38308 guns. AFAIK though it's just a basic gravity feed....it can be adapted.

well, i'm going to get this hvlp gun Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90977)

not bad for the price. like 200+ for the whole set up.

i can sorta get a hook up on paint at a store i go to get supplies. Oh and rb25crazy the reason ur gun says 50-70 is becuase its a normal gun. hvlps just have a high efficany tip that helps waste less materials. They operate the same but a lower velocity but same volume of paint so more gets on your ride and not in the air. Your gun is good but i would get another one just to have designated guns. One for paint and one for clear. Helps save time and hassel.

Well as we continue along on year 2 of this project, i got bored of fucking with the engine and accessories and decided to get over my depression of working on this car and start on the body work again. Ill be updating this thread regularly as i finish here shortly.

You cant tell from the pictures but i stripped all the primer off the wide body panels after i realized they had more waves than the pacific ocean. Where you see them here is after about 20-25 hours ( weekends and nights only) of filling and blocking. I almost went thru to raw fiberglass in places but the end was worth it, the panel for the most part is straight as an arrow.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6728.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6729.jpg

I also took the chance to get the roof done while i was doing the quarters so i could prime everything and there would be no tape. The black streaks you see here are the "guide coat" this helps you figure out where the high and low spots are.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6730.jpg

I decided since i had sanded so much of the gel coat off, that it was better to use an epoxy primer because it pretty much bonds to the substrate and seals it from being able to absorb anything later. Ie moisture, paint etc. I just shot everything with it. 2 coats. When mixing epoxy primer its important to follow the instructions very carefully, it mixes just like epoxy glue. 1 part primer and 1 part catalyst. The particular one i used was dupont and after it mixed you have to leave it sit for half to one hour so it could induct, then let it dry for at least 1 hour before you spray anything on top of it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6731.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6734.jpg

After the epoxy was dried, i waited 3 hours just to be safe. I shot 3 coats of 2k urethane primer, for final sanding. The car is pretty straight as it is, these final coats will ensure it is a show car finish i will destroy on a track somewhere.

Up until this point

Roof has been blocked to 320 gonna final sand with 600 grit.

For the quarters i blocked 180 , 220 , 320, with filler at various stages. Now its gonna be blocked to 600 as well.

I will final block with 600 once everything else is primered and done.

why didn't you paint the rad. support in the beginning?

the bottom of the rad support is welded in place and painted, the top part is removable and will be powdercoated flat black.

ok update

Got started on the trunk, took me a while to get it because of all the panel adhesive stuck on it from when i bonded the quarters and i used it as a bondo mixing board for a while lol.

Started sanding with 180 on the DA. Just to get the rough stuff off, not to much otherwise you will gouge the surface to much and have to do more sanding later.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6738.jpg

Now i put on the guide coat to show any high or low spots, use a contrasting color so its easier to tell. At this point i begin hand blocking with 320 grit wet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6739.jpg

Heres some examples of low spots, the first pic was my dumbass pressing to hard on the DA.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6741.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_6748.jpg

It is at this point you decide whether the low spots need filler or a high build primerm, mine are all pretty shallow so i should be able to get away with a high build primer and a little more sanding.

Heres a little trick, once the panel is blocked well throw some water on it and the water will sheet off the panel. This pretty much replicates what it looks like when it is painted so if you have any defects they will show up here, Once again this panel has been sanded and has no gloss just the water i poured on it.

just to update, got some body work done on the doors, and still working on the fenders. Everything else is pretty much done. Trying to get it painted and done in the next 10 days, i wanted to paint in this weekend but the temperature here in miami took a nose dive to 68 degrees, its freezing haha.

My biggest dilema is I am having second thoughts about painting the car the gunmetal/gold color. I really want to paint it mercedes mars red or jet black. I just dont think the car will look good in red and black might show defects if i missed any.

Also im wondering if i should just spray the Carbon fiber hood, what do you guys think. I already have the paint but if im gonna change my mind now is the time. Other color suggestions are welcome.

paint match the fucking hood!!! it's not 1999 anymore brotha!!! nobody cares about carbon fiber parts anymore unless your whole car is made of dry carbon!

I personally would paint it black if it were up to me... Black 240's are sick as fuck and granted you may see the imperfections in the paint because YOU painted and prepped it... Nobody else would know where to look, I already know your style so you would wet sand and post prep that shit like it was nobodies business. It may bother you that your car is two tone, it may not who knows... Seems to be the jazz these days with 240's

I cant wait to get mine soon or ill pick u a lph400 from iwata. I sold my lph100 since it was too small for bigger cars. Tell me how it works man. Heard that guns clears so good but you have to move quick since its made for fast production work. I dont think i would use it for bases unless ur using solid colors since the mattalics might bounce around from the high pressure efficancy. Such a nice gun....

bottom line just let me know how u like it. I have used devilbiss guns and love them but not as much as sata and iwata though.

Looks good, I think your car would look good in a dark metalic red. But the Gunmetal/Gold would look sweet as well.

I'll be repainting my car here soon after I finish fixing the front end damage and tubs. Im not 18x10's up front cool, but I still smack the inner fenders pretty nasty under suspension compression so while I'm doing all this work might as well fix that problem as well.

So either i paint the doors and rear body one day and the front fenders and bumper the next, or i have to paint the jambs assemble the car then paint it all at one time. People keep telling me the metallic wont match if i paint it seperatly.

Next dilema is the damn color, i dont know what i was thinking when i picked this color out, im seriously contemplating painting this fucker black or even red.

This is the color i had picked originally and bought a gallon of paint for.

normally yes, but since i can access the rear to these i just hammer and dolly them as straight as possible and fill, as you can see towards the end there was very little fill needed even though i applied alot, if this was a bigger panel id break out the shrinking hammer and fix it right but since they where small door dings i just filled them for sake of quickness.

question, which i cant seem to ever get my head around. what are the specs of your wheels i would love to run larger tires on the front of my s13 but i cant do to the fact that they set up camp right next to my coils. i have rolled and pulled the fenders but it doesnt seem like i can fit more then 235's with my wheels. any in-site as to how you do this cause i would love to run larger tires. nice body work and all that jazz... i bet your neighbor must love you haha..

Did a test spray on one of the origin fenders, just to see how i like the color and how the new gun shoots. Man o man, blows that harbor FRIGHT gun out of the water. Did this all over the cours of about 1.5 hours, at dusk and finished up at night.

Huge 13 inch plus size fan, lays down basecoat and clear like glass, super fast to paint with. And when i say glass i mean like glass virtually no orange peel even in my amatuer hands.

Here is the fender, i have not wet sanded buffed or even prepped this fender, all i did was wipe it down with a scuff pad and fiberglass cleaner, sealed it, 3 coats of base 3 coats of clear. Enjoy

thats it i know which gun i am buying next gti/ gfg plus! I allways heard good things about the gfg in laying clear like a champ. Even better than satas. You know you can buy a atmosphere cap pressure guage so you can have a constant amount of psi coming out of your gun when you spray different parts. Other than that just remember to leave your gun at the same fan pattern and trigger settings and you should no issues blending. Jambs dont matter when blending on a whole new car. Just doing things like fenders, hood, quarter that matter.

I've told ppl here numorous times habor freight sucks and finally someone here used a good gun and it proves they do suck. I have a devilbiss gun for primer and an iwata lph100 for painting. Gonna get a new set up soon. Either lph400 paired with satajet RP or the devilbiss setup. Btw how much did the guns run you new? around 400-600?

Here it is on the car, for me the jury is still out on the color. It sure is a shiny turd though.

I guess what i dont like about it is it just is so dull, i wanted something that would pop more I guess. Believe it or not i think it looks better at night.

Im thinking in order of importance

1. Super gloss black
2. Mercedes AMG silver
3. Mazda 3 red
4. The color I have now ( indium grey ) mercedes

Any suggestions guys?? the car will be painted this coming friday come hell or high water. Just sucks i may have to buy a different color paint, after already spending 250 for the gallon of this one.

I say paint the car that color, you will appreciate how it looks on the car once it's done....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v46/om1kron/greycar.jpg

especially in the sun... a dark grey isn't going to pop it's going to look black and then have the gray lay on top of it where the sun hits. You get the best of both worlds, a car that looks black but has an awesome color where the sun hits.

Another great color for this is Dark Amethyst Pearl.

http://www.jtuned.com/wire/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/015.jpg

but hey I personally dig the color you're going to paint it, you want it to pop more, polish your wheels. LOL!

Shouldn't have went metallic, honestly I found the 90s metallic paint fad really lame. I know EXTREME flakes and metallics have been raped to death with 'drift cars' but honestly... what is there to it? It's an excuse for a poor paint job (not saying yours is).

Pure colors like pure blackest black, pure redest red (like ferrari red) with proper polishing jobs are where it's at imho... when you can see yourself as in a mirror... while looking wet.

Man i never thought this would be such a hard choice to make.

If this wasnt so subjective it would be a no brianer for me. IE if black was faster than red it would be a no brainer lol. Im leaning towards a gunmetal right now.

In either case come hell or high water the car will be painted on thurday or friday, i have both days off of work and the car is ready to go. Ill probably pick the color at the last minute and end up regretting it later like i always do when i have a hard choice lol. What can you do, stay tuned.

yes black is definitly the cheapest color especially in chromabase coming in at 170 a gallon with red being the most expensive just shy of 400.00

Like i posted before im just worried about any waves that might show up due to something i may have missed in the prep that is keeping me away from black. Thats where metallics help.

Anyone know of a nice metallic black ( say with silver metallics).

Nighthawk Black Pearl from honda.

Dude first off great thread, cant believe i havent come across it sooner! loved the Zenki with stock aero but awesome wheels.... also loved the OEM green, however it looked more like DN1 (kouki green) but i'm a little biased as thats my color, and i love it.

A really nice black metallic thats in the nissan family is black onyx from the infiniti QX56 its paint code G10 its got silver and rainbow metallic flakes. Pretty sweet color. heres a close up from when my body shop (at work) let me design a G37 two tone

Anyway i vote you paint it something brigher than the turd brown, black is always classic and nice, but its been done. Ferrari red or lambo orange pearl would be sick, but i dont know if thats what your going for. Either way i can tell your a perfectionist so gloss (non-metallic) colors would be harder, but it seems like you've put in enough prep work to make it fine, and i know that anyone other than yourself isint going to see any minor flaws..... Plus like you keep saying your just going to beat it up anyway so fuggit, go with what you like but keep it simple enough that you will be okay with re-doing it multiple times over. Cant wait to see the finished product.

oh and i'll buy your over fenders if you're done with em and wanna cut me a good deal. LMK

was that supposed to be a flat finish? :keke:

waay too much dryspray. You're either holding the gun too far away, or you're moving too quickly. Also, watch your overlap...its hard to see from the pics but your hood may be sporting some bad tiger stripes. How many coats of clear did you give it?

I saw some guys asking about primer guns, I'm a fan of the GTI primer guns, and I usually use a SATA HVLP 3000 for base/clear (1.3 spray nozzle on average, every paint manufacturer has a tip size they recommend) . Or sometimes a SATA Jet 3000 RP for clear, that gun lays clear on nice and smooth, You just have to be a little bit quicker with your pace when using the RP +clear.

dori_sil8t
02-13-2009, 12:50 PM

In that case it might not look so bad with clear.

About the spray guns, I'm buying a Devilbiss GFG670 this weekend with the dekup system. At first I was thinking of using a cheap HF gun to lay the primer. I'm not really sure anymore since I dont want to ruin the final finish.

if u want a good primer gun, i would recommend the pri gun from devilbiss. Lays primer so well, it'll reduce prep and sanding. Get gfg plus for clear, gti millenium for base. Alot of guns but designated guns are better. I'd go with dekups system or 3mm pps system. Works awsome for painting over head or odd angles. In that case it might not look so bad with clear.

About the spray guns, I'm buying a Devilbiss GFG670 this weekend with the dekup system. At first I was thinking of using a cheap HF gun to lay the primer. I'm not really sure anymore since I dont want to ruin the final finish.

I wouldn't waste your time with the harbor freight guns. I have tried a few, really bad orange-peel from the first one I bought, was about $50 I think. I used it for a long time spraying the primer for bedliners, still works to this day, but the paint cup lid broke so I stopped using it. I bought their gun on sale for $12.99, I just wanted a new cup for my other gun. The 13 dollar gun sprayed primer GREAT, just as nice as my Iwata. The thing started falling apart in the middle of spraying, and the paint cup broke like my last one. Now I don't use either of them, waste of $63.

Wow thats a good amount of money. I originally planned on spending around $350 for any kind of spray guns I would need. With the prime gun, I'm looking at about $550 total. I might have to rethink my plans. =/

i used a combo of two different guns grav and suction i had a easier time with the suction cuz it laid the paint wider. so it was easier to overlap. keep in mind i have no clue what im doing and i used the duplicolour easy to spray paint. also a 5 gallon comp with no water separator.

So you removed all the molding around the glass? Did you do this yourself? I want to get a shell and paint it this summer, so I was wondering if there is any way to get around taking off the glass entirely. Can one just remove the molding and leave the glass and simply taping that up?

how did u remove the rear side windows..????:naw:

gsracer
02-14-2009, 05:22 PM
I removed them by cutting them out carefully, theres a tool that i bought to remove windows its air powered and sort of cuts them out. Yes you can paint around them but it is not the optimal way to do it..

Well started putting the bish back together..

Screw it, getting both. Yay!

I use an Iwata lph400 lv, 1.3 tip. Its an amazing all around gun, its really all you would need. Some people say its not the BEST for spraying metallic basecoats, but if I were to recommend one gun it would be an Iwata. I have a few guns but now I just use my Iwata and change the cup for spraying primer, just to keep one really clean for spraying paint.

Really? I have always thought it was the easiest gun to clean, it is completely chrome plated unlike most guns. Also, it only has the paint needle attached to the trigger, most guns have the needle and air valve you have to clean on the trigger. I don't change tips, but the paint cup comes off like any other gun.

Ok swo my hands where falling of wetsanding not ot mention i couldnt get it right, so i bought this kit from 3m called the perfect finish.

It comes with some 1500 / 3000 grit discs and an adapter for the DA sander, and 3 different compound, not to mention a dvd with instructions. It cost me 100 at the local body supply.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/3mstarterkit.jpg

All i can say is wow, what would have taken me 2-3 days i did in a matter of hours.

Here is the process with the 1500 disc on the sander

Wiped down and ready for 3000 grit, matte black FTL

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v344/gsracer/Projectbacktobasics/IMG_7007.jpg

Here you can see the difference with the 3000 grit on the left and 1500 grit on the right. With the 3000 the surface already starts to shine before you even buff

yeah the chrome plating does it make it easy to clean dont worry about it since i never submerge my guns in lacquer thinner AT ALL. I usally clean the cups first then run clean lacquer untill it turns clear(no need to take out the needle just clean the passagw where material flows through). . I just hate having to make sure all of the material is out between sealer, bases, clears. Wastes time and cuase a chemical or aheadsion problems in the feature if ur not on one system.

to op man the car came out looking great after the cut n' buff. Now the gay parts comes with having as black sexy car... keeping it clean and swirl free and driving it in the summer ha ha ha.

Just thought that I would update, I ordered a Devilbiss PRi primer gun from Spraygunworld a few months back. Sucks, now I kinda lost the motivation to paint my car.

its actually pretty easy once you do it. Like i said, prior to this i had zero paint and body experience outside rattle canning a few things.

Just use quality materials, a decent gun and most importantly take your time, just the bodywork ( non paint portion ) took me 3 months the first time ( weekends mostly) because i knew if you dont get that part right you can lay the most beautiful paint in the world but it will still look like crap.

After the experience i could knock out a whole car with no major damage in a couple of weekends, hell when i redid the quarter panel it took basiclly 6 hrs.
