brake booster, should i go new or used

pretty sure my brake booster is leaking. if it is, should i replace it with a new one (like 125 with a 30 dollar core at Advance), or can i cheap out and grab one out of a yard? i haven't pulled mine yet, can you see the diaphragms to tell if one's good or not?

btw what brakes are you running? just the normal oem s13 brakes? I have the oem ones still and recently ordered new pads and rotors but was wondering if upgrading to a z32 brake booster was worth it or even compatible. Im still kinda new to the whole brake thing on s13's

Has been working just fine for me.

BTW, I always wondered...is it normal for the brake pedal to get considerably stiffer if you have your other foot on the gas as well? I never noticed it until I replaced my brake booster. Maybe I have a small vacuum leak....

It's not really 'larger', it's just a dual chamber, 205mm/180mm vs. a single 230mm. But it does give a stronger pedal feel because of the added chamber.

having the auto helps a bit when ur running z32 fronts and stock rears from what ive been told... cant give you the 100% cause i havent tried it myself...


but yeah get a new one if u can afford it cause its a pain in the ass to change really and having to do it twice is worse...

btw... be sure it isnt your brake master leaking dont wanna be changing something and finding it was another thing from the start...

lol Im having the same issue..my original one was leaking,so I went to the yard and pulled one out thinking it was in good condition (basicly took a chance:duh: ), put it in and find out its just as bad as the original one.PITA!! now im definitely going with a new one and I suggest you do the same;)

I bought a reman'ed unit simply because they offer free lifetime replacement.

After sitting out for a year, the booster died and I took it back. Free replacement. No question asked.

The stiffer pedal is likely due to the engine vaccum being closer to atmosphere or having a more positive presure than when your typically depressing the brake pedal where you will be pulling the most amount of vacuum and assist the booster the most.

When in doubt, hook up a vacuum gauge and check vacuum. You should be in the mid-teens of PSI.
