I noticed the other night when I had the radio off and the heater off, that sometimes when driving I hear a strange ticking noise coming from somewhere near the gages in the dash. I cant figured out where its coming from, but its very strange because when I speed up, the ticking speeds up, when I slow down the ticking slows down, it will continue ticking very slowly as I break and come to a stop, then the ticking stops when the car is stopped... It doesn't tick all the time, sometimes I don't hear it at all, the only reason it worries me is because when i do hear it, the ticking speeds and slows with the speed of the car... Its driving me nuts, if anyone thinks they know what it is or how to fix it, id be very appreciative for any help. thanks =)

Only time I've heard this problem were in two totally different cases.

Case 1: Toyota 4runner - just had the header replaced and it wasn't tightened enough, and it made that ticking as speed went up/down. They had someone look at the header, and now its fixed.

Case 2: My dad's old Caravan. It was something with the wheel. It sounded like when you were a kid, and would run like a stick against your bike wheel. I think it ended up being one of the bearings.

Hope that at least might point you in the right direction.

Sounds like a CV joint, common problem on FWD cars, a bit more rare on rwd since less is happening at any "axle."   I guess this would have to be in the rear on one of your halfshafts.  Look for a torn or worn out boot.

I had this problem two days ago, there was a ticking coming from the rear passenger side somewhere... I wasn't sure what/why.  So I got out of the car and found that a little pebble was stuck between the treads on my rear driver's tire. =)   Could it be something like that? Do you live in an area with lots of sand/pebbles on/next to the road?

My passenger seat ticks. I have no freaking clue of what it is. The whole thing vibrates, and it's not the seat belt.

My guage cluster ticks too. I think it's a need or a spur gear or something.

if its comming from the guages, i would say jeff is the closest and its probably the spur gear in the guage.

the only ticking i ever had on my s13 lead me to a blown engine. if the tick evolves into a knock, for god sake, SHUT IT OFF! i was in denial. "nah, couldnt be the rods." well folks, the KA24DE isnt as resilient as we thought. i think the KA stands for KA-BOOM! (and yes it was well maintained.)
