Well I recently did the 1997-1998 conversion on the car. I thought I'd put down a list of what is needed and the lil modifications required to complete the installation.

The installation was quite simple took about 3 hours (2 people).

Parts Required from a 1997-1998:
Hood
Fenders
Headlight Assembly
Corner lights
Grille
Bumper reinforcement
Bumper cover
bottom fender lining (not necessary)

I suggest you have all the parts painted before installing.

Remove corner lights, headlights, and grille.

Remove turn signals and corner lights.

Remove or peel back fender lining on both sides

Remove all the bolts that hold the bumper cover to the bumper reinforcement (about 8 of them). there will also be two bolts on each side that hold the bumper cover to the fender (must be accesed from inside the fender.

Remove the bolts that attach the underbody plastic lining to the car.

Basically to remove the fenders there are 2 behind the doors (the bottom bolt must be accesed from inside the fender) and 3-4 bolts holding it to the car under the hood. (10mm bolts)

Remove the 4 bolts that hold the hood. Make sure you have someone help you hold the hood while unbolting.

Remove the 95-96 bumper reinforcement assembly.

Now install the new fenders, mounting points are exactly the same. You may need to realign the doors, most likely not.

Install and align the hood.

Now line up the lights, you'll notice the inner 2 bolts that hold the headlight are misaligned (only one hole fits, and trhe plastic stub on the light doesnt line up.), drill a new hole (using the hood to align the light).

Now you need to wire up the headlights. i think its a red and black lead. best way is to use a voltometer to test when you have the light on low beam to see if the lead is hot. if you have USDM light, you might not need to modify high beam wires. Once that is done, take headlights out again.

Now install the 1997-1998 bumper reinforcement assembly on the car

You may need to drill holes for the bumper retainer bracket.

Install the 97-98 bumper cover is is up to you if you want to put in the foam padding or not.

Install the 97-98 headlights and put the corner lights in.

Install the 1997-1998 Grille (it snaps into the headlights instead of bolting onto the bumper reinforcement like the 95-96 did.

Reinstall the turn signals and side markers

Put the Fender lining back into place

Put the underbody plastic lining

You'll notice the plastic lining that goes from bumper to wheelwell doesnt quite fit. its not necessary to get 97-98 one unless you want to. just take it out.

This should comeplete the install. and it should look like this:

Thank you Jared (teampulse) for helping me with the install.

I chose not the have the parts painted for now. I want to repaint my whole car that starfire blue or Toyota black (209).

I went to your site and have to say your car looks a lot better with the S14b front end.
I have been thinking about doing the same to my S13 but not sure about the fitment though.

Very nice!!!!!

thanks. s14b actually refers to the old model (Before minor change).

but I dont like the A and be label...

basically older models are called zenki (first model)
new ones are called kouki (last model)

or s14 m/c

thats how i understand it

Do you have any other pics of the install besides the finish product?

I'm going to do the same thing, but on my own and I was looking more alittle more info. Actually I was waiting to see S14vaxlr8 do a write since he took tons of pics.

Grant: Are those 200SX or Silvia headlights? And where did you get them from? =)

Also, what size bulb is in the low beam? I know our US spec ones are H1. . . but I've heard rumors about those being H4?

I was about to ask the same thing.....where did you get your JDM projectors from?

But if not. . then I'm going to keep my USDM lights. . hey. . anyone out there with a LHD 200sx wanting to trade headlights? You can get that cool USDM look everyone wants, right? haha

its the JDM Silvia headlights. Jspec.com imported a set so I picked em up instead of going to the dealer to get new headlights.

The beam pattern is not that far off, is shifted a bit towards the left. I havent even bothered to aim the lights, they are fine to me.

rumors of the projectors being H4 is false. my lights use H1 bulbs.

Compared to the Silvia ones, I think the USDM lights look rather ugly.

there is a guy here at san diego (mossy nissan) that can import these lights. he actually has one set he imported. It's for sale for about $680-700.

you might be seeing that set of lights on Badmojo's car.

I just noticed that piece is seperate when you buy the hood, anyways here is the part number.

But I would just double check to see if its right....all the catalog says is "Seal, Core Support" and points to a seal from a pic of the hood and various parts.

This thread isnt THAT dead... I have a question regarding the converions. I have the 89 240 and I would really like to do the s14a conversion with the JDM lights. Will there be a massive ammount of chopping required?

SimpleS14
10-22-2002, 03:37 PM
IIRC, it will require some custom work to get that front end on your car. So basically yea you would need to do some chopping and buy the rad support.

I like the S13 front end (triple projector) or just a nice bumper (Type-X) on a '89 240SX.....but thats just me.

I read your post and after doing a little surfing i decided to do the following: I going to take a 89 240sx and bolt up the front end off a 95-99 240sx. I gonna use a cf hood for a 99 240sx (us), lights from 95-99 (us), and fenders from 95 (us). this will work right?

No

Not trying to sound mean, but there is no such thing as a '99 240SX, maybe 200SX but thats something different.

Nothing will bolt up (easily), everything will require custom work. Also you can not mix and match pieces (95 fenders with 98 hood). The 95-96 has a different front end from the 97-98. I'm assume you want the 97-98 look, so you will need all the parts listed on page one....

PLUS: Rad. support, turn signals, and side markers.

You need the radiator(sp) support, thats a must. It will make the install easier, but a place to mount the headlights. The side markers may not be needed depending on what bumper you get. As for the turn signals, you might have to get USDM or JDM depending on your bumper. Also if you want a CF hood you need one for the 97-98 240SX.

Once again that will require some custom work, and if you have the $$$......good luck!

Nope. that won't work and here's why....
There is no 99 US spec 240sx.
There are two types of lights for the 240 from 95-98. 95-96 are zenki, and 97-98 are kouki.
and the fenders for the 95-96 are different from the 97-98 along with the hood.

and none of those parts will just bolt right up to an 89 240sx. There's going to have to be some chopping involved.

Hey Grant, do you really need the 97-98 bumper reinforcement assembly?

HonorableCheng
10-29-2002, 07:53 AM
Sorry about that, I jumbled what i meant to say.

Importfan.com is offering a free cf hood w/ the purchase of a body kit or bumper. it is made for the s15. will it fit on the us 89 240sx (s13, 180sx)? I intend to replace the 89 240sxfenders and lights with those from a us 95-96/97+ 240sx and make a us sil80 instead of a jdm one. is this possible and which would be easier.

Sniper-X
10-29-2002, 06:23 PM
Sorry to burst your bubble again man, but an S15 hood will only fit on an S15 front end. The lights and fenders won't line up other wise. And remember that you can't mix and match front end parts from a 95-96 and a 97-98 240sx. Their designs are different. Both will involve cutting and welding in order to fit onto a 89 240sx so they will both probably be equally difficult to do, unless you can find a special kit that makes the conversion a bolt on affair but I doubt that.
The easiest scenario would be to just do a regular Sil80 conversion because the 180sx and S13 share the same chasis in the US and unless I'm mistaken (and I could be) it would be a bolt on affair maybe w/ a few exceptions.

lucky you

Well I just finshed my conversion and it was pretty simple, just time consuming. The only mod I had to do are the headlights (because getting them to work). I have to drill three holes into the rad. support for the headlights. One for the plastic knob and the other two for the screws. There is one part I forgot to mention, which is very important to have.

Bumper reinforcement: 62290-80F00 - $200.00 (estimate)

This will add some extra support for the bumper, right now since I don't have it my bumper hangs and its not flush to the lights. But everything else was a direct bolt and I recommended you have a second hand on the hood.

I did everything by myself and it took me roughly 4 hours.

EDIT: Forget my wiring idea that Grant quoted from me.

But everything else was a direct bolt and I recommended you have a second hand on the hood. As for wiring the lights its was pretty east, but it took me 15 minutes to figure it out.

What you do is snip the red and black wire off the connector on the headlight....JUST CLIP THEM, DO NOT CUT THE WIRES COMPLETELY OFF (as in have enough slack connect to the housing of the bulbs). What I did is take the black wire and connected it to the top slot from the power source for the headlights. Next I took the red wire and slipped it into the left slot of the power source. I recommended you have these wires exposed, such as having the metal exposed. This makes sliding them into the slots much easier. After doing this test your headlights, if it doesn't work or look dim switch the red wire to the other side slot. It will take you some time to get it just right so that when you put the headlights in and screw them down, the wires won't become unloose. Once you have the lights working and already bolted down, don't worry about it disconnecting while driving. I took my car on rough roads and hard turns and no problems.

I did everything by myself and it took me roughly 4 hours.

Do NOT do it that way...

Doing it your way can be a fire hazard, and may lead to corrosion of the wires although you may not notice it right now

anyways to do it the correct way is to find the other end of the harness off a 1997-1998 (i think it is avaliable thru the dealer, or you can find it off some sivlia k's clips) and splice it into your 95-96 wiring, just cut off the H4 harness because from here on that harness is use less.

I will try to post pictures of mine when I do get a chance.

*on a side note, that post that I made about JDM lights...when i look at them while i'm sober i don't really think they are JDM lights. hahaha! Drunken Stupors will do that to you I guess.

It's for both, because they both use H1's for low beams. However the high beams should be the same.

Right now I'm taking the cheaper route, which is buy the H1 connectors and splice them with the wiring that powered the H4 connectors. Oh yea I also bought new harness for the ones I cut. In total it cost me $42, but I'm still waiting on the H1 connectors.

You can't use the 95-96 support because everything on the Kouki sticks out more. Also if you try to fit any kouki bumper you will notice that the old reinforcement gets in the way, plus the bumper bracket does not perfectly sit on the reinforcement because it stick out more.
