View Full Version : Average Engine Temps

Just wondering what everyone's average engine temps are.

I realize that this is very dependent on environmental and driving factors...but what the hell, for shits and giggles and all.

I've got a S13 blacktop with dual FAL, DiF fan controller, Koyo alum radiator, DME cooling panels, and Defi gauge tapping temp at the coolant return waterneck. Running regular 50/50 anti-freeze

On a cool night I usually manage to stay right around 190 F. During the day with some light spirited driving I'm usually anywhere between 195 F and 210 F, which seems a little hot to me.

I might have a coolant leak somewhere though because I can smell coolant after a bit of driving. Gotta check that out.

What about everyone else?

Just hooked up a real gauge (not my 40 year old stocker anymore!) to the KA in the 'Goon. I've got one 10" fan and a VW radiator and was at a steady 185-190* cruising, and when I got on it, I got her up to right under 200* on 100% water.

According to my brother, anything upwards of 180 and below 220ish is going to be safe. 220 is getting up there, and you might want to upgrade fans or radiator at that point, obviously, but there's no huge risk.

even up to 225 is considered normal operating temp

I am running a Greddy aluminum radiator with twin 12" spal fans using distilled water and water wetter. On a normal day cruising down the street or highway I usually see 160 degree fahrenheit. On aggressive driving or going through steep mountain roads it usually goes anywhere from 180 to 210. I have my fans wired to go on all the time however.

Here's what I'm wondering: since I'm measuring engine temps AFTER they circulate through the engine they will obviously be higher. Anybody know what the correlation is?

Like say 190 F after running through the block is equivalent to 180 F before coolant runs through the block.

Thanks.

i don't really see too many people running that on the return..

i wouldn't really want mine to run hotter than 185

Those are some high numbers, my car never goes above 70-72 Degrees Celsius which is 158-162 Degrees Fahrenheit for you Americans... I have a simple setup, Stock Clutch Fan, with SR Shroud, NISMO T-Stat and Koyo Radiator. Car is tuned at ~320whp... Sometimes Stock is good!

74 degrees celcius according to my pfc

50/50 distilled water and anti-freeze. Stock clutch fan & shroud.

I get 180 F on freeway during the day and about 170 F on freeway at night. Don't do much spirited driving, just to and from work.

geez you guys got some hi temps..my setup is:
s13 redtop, dual FAL, nismo t-stat, samco hoses, DIF fan controller, koyo rad, distilled water and water wetter.

i've got a defi temp gauge, and the waterneck adapter from TF.

my temps are usually at 160-165 F*, higher if i push it, but even then the highest i've seen is maybe a little over 180...

Lets see, looking at the s14 sr20det FSM, the thermostat isn't even supposed to open until 170F. The a/c cooling fan turns on low at 203F and turns on high at 215F. I don't see any reason why temps shouldn't get up to 215.

My temps are usually around 190, I have one fan turn on at 185, and the second turns on at 195. On hot summer days, I see 195-200 when I top out 4th or something, but then cools right off when cruising.

Does anyone have a preference reason as to where they take the temp measurement. I have seen people tap the return hose/neck or the lower radiator hose. Obviously one will/should be lower than the other...but for the sake of monitoring the engine...which value would be more important. If I had to guess it would be the return straight out of the engine. Anyone have different thoughts?

:sidenote: blackej7 love your car.

I have a stock S14 SR20DET w/ greddy m-spec, Koyo rad, and stock fan setup. Using an STRi water temp gauge I am usually right at 170F. Granted it really hasn't gotten into the high 80's+ here yet, the highest I've ever seen it was right around 192F.

180 to 200 on a stock KA and stock cooling system. I've seen upwards of 210 on hot days in stop and go traffic.

Chevy 350 V8 genI w/ carb, Koyo SR aluminium rad, Racepak integrated fan controller (UDX250SR standalone dash), FAL 220 fans. It also has a full Vintage Air A/C kit.

I have the fan controller set at 170 for now. Coolant temp at the head stablizes around 170 most of the time with no problem.

I'm not sure if 170 is good for my setup so I have to do research, but at least I know I won't overheat.

how about the stock temperature gauge on the gauge cluster?
the needle on mine has never gone over half it either stays a lil right under the middle (before) but now for the last two-3 months it has gone to half mark..

how about the stock temperature gauge on the gauge cluster?

Absolutely useless. There's no telling. The stock temp gauge is like an on/off switch. If you see it move to high it's already overheated.

i run mine around 90-100c and i recaled my stock guage to get to the hot line at 115c.

i hear people saying that, and the weird thing is that when starting my car, my stock gauge cluster starts moving off of the needle before my STRi gauge starts moving off of the (lowest) 70F mark.

my PFC says 69*C during normal driving, i have Nismo thermostat, Koyo, Dual altima fans running 100% of the time, and 50/50. Car is tuned to 330whp for normal driving. When I drift i see temps b/t 85-100*C. When it hits 100 i'll stop and pop the hood to let her cool, takes about 3-5min to come back down to 78 or so C. not bad, but i'm looking to be able to do more or longer runs before temps get that high (I usually get about 8 runs before she gets to 100) by putting in an Oil cooler. My oil temps right now are around 180*F i've seen as high as 200*F but didnt like that so stopped for a while and let it idle till it cooled down. Dont really know whats normal for oil temps.

Damn, I see 190-200F oil temps daily, just cruising on hot summer days. I'm pretty sure up to 215-220 is still safe.

I have about the same setup with a stock Tstat and run about 185-190 deg F just cruising around in 100 deg F temps. It'll run about 175-180 deg F in the winter.

On the track I've hit about 200-205 deg F, but I don't like it to go any higher.

I hit 170-180 deg F oil temps in the pan(GReddy) on a hot hot day on the street with lots of WOT - do about 205-210 deg F on the track. I hit 245-250 deg F before without an oil cooler and I was coasting down the straights at that point.

On cooler days on the street it'll struggle to get over 140-150 deg F. GReddy oil pan plus a little oil flowing through the cooler is a lot of cooling when you're just cruising, plus E85 cools the engine off quite a bit.

I see anywhere from 82-92* C on a stock ka dohc with a koyo radiator and altima fan running on low. On colder days I usually see 80-86 C. I run half coolant/distilled water.

140-170 on cruising even if i have a heavy foot. its when im sitting in hot summer traffic that i hit 100-110 :(

then again found out few days ago my fans stopped working, so forcing them on with the AC

shit. RB25DET, my fans kick on at 180deg. runs around 200-220 in hot weather.

coling:

50/50 mix
N1 water pump
Low temp thermo
FAL dual 12" pushers
Griffin radiator
All AC removed

lazorz temp sensor teps taken from block.

Well, I switched out my rad hoses with some Samco ones and she's running a lot cooler now. 180-190 (measured after circulating through the engine) in 50 F weather. The suspect the old hoses were leaking at the couplings. I'll see what she runs like during the day tomorrow.

I am kind of curious to know what you dudes are running, fluid-wise?
Especially the guys who track their cars/daily it.

-Distilled Water w/ some kind of additive
-Straight Water

well your reading your cooled water, you need to be reading your water coming OUT of the engine, not going IN.

and why bring up this thread? did the cats get ahold of your computer again?

I just changed mine up a little bit. I'm now running a distilled / Motul Inugel / Motul MoCool mixture. I've also added a Setrab oil-cooler with remote oil filter and a power-steering cooler. I will let you guys know how it is as soon as I get some time with it.
