I have the 1990 SE and the seats that have the hole in the upper middle of them. I was wondering if I were to put harnesses in my car if I could use these seat via running the harness through the hole in the seat. Ill see if I can get pics to better demonstrate what im talking about, but i hope you guys understand. Thanks

Yes you can. Many people do this. I think that's why Nissan put the holes there for.

You CAN, but is it really safe? I've wondered the same thing myself, that little slot is awfully narrow.

i wouldnt do it on the stock s13 seats. crimp your neck. better to upgrade to at least an s14 seat and put iton. s13 is waaay too small imho.

later S13 SEs had seats that will work also, it's just the "seamless" integrated headrest seats from the early cars and base models that we're concerned about.

One more thing to spend money on for my car harnesses, scca-legal bar... might as well get some aftermarket seats so I can use 5+pt harnesses (submarining is a scary concept).. etc

I wouldn't wear a harness on a seat w/o a break b/n the headrest and the back. That means it will be going around your shoulders sideways which is dangerous. That will pretty much allow the brains and head part to snap forward while the belts slide down & around and hold the sternum and guts stationary. Not pretty.

AKA is right about the bar too - harnesses are a very bad thing when the hold you upright as your car crushes down onto your neck (3-points will let you slide to the side). Harnesses are always a bad idea on the street (you can't lean forward to safely monitor traffic). As for anti-sub belt(s): if you get into a serious collision w/o one, you will regret it. 4pts. are fine for autox use, but if you hit something head first at speed, I assure you bad things can happen to your internal organs.

If you guys would have heard the stories from my classroom instructor at Summit...

I don't see any safety issues with the the base model seats. Yes, it will be a little norrow for your neck but if you don't mind that, theres nothing wrong with it.

And yes, it will keep your body upright, but thats the same in any seat. Its the harness that does that, not the seet. If your worried about the car crushing, get a roll-cage. Thats what they're for.

Yes, hitting something head on very hard is bad with any seatbelt if it does it's job right. But you have to be going extremely fast and decelerate at an extremely fast rate to accelerate your internal organs enough to hit your rib cage at a damaging rate.

Take Micheal Schumacher's shunt at Silverstone in '99. He hit the tire barrier at 103Km/H. Thats a pretty significant head on head on crash. Internal damage was a concern but he was unscathed in that aspect.

wpayne-

I don't get your post about the upright thing? What I'm saying is that a harness w/o rollover protection is more dangerous that no harness at all.

Also, the point about Schumy is not very relevant. AKA and I know of an e30 M3 that hit a pit wall at about that speed w/ factory belts. Both driver and instructor were okay (although driver spent a bit of time in hospital to make sure). To hit at that speed in a prepared race car (especially an F1 car) is nothing. The hole thing is a roll cage. Not to mention the use of 5 point harnesses and custom seats.
