View Full Version : Wierd squeal and lack of power

Hey guys, here is a new problem I've encountered.

The following happens whenever its cold, usually right around freezing. Below freezing it rarely does it, and when its warm, it rarely did. But it happens.

I get the loudest squeal ever. If I rev the throttle, it squeals louder/faster. I thought it was the fan belt, but wouldn't that make the squeal happen ALL the time?

The main lack of power is first gear. Yes, its manual. So I prepare to exit as I normally do, and the revs just dip like mad. I've been driving standard for over 3 years, so its not user error. I gas it, but it doesn't seem to let gas flow, and as I let out the clutch, obviously the car gets ready to stall. This is really apparent when this squeal is happening.

Oh also when I start it, it stalls often. I usually have to rev it, and I can feel the car just shudder. It takes steady pressure on the gas to even it out.

Any advice?

How do I tell if the belt is worn out?

What do I look for at the pulleys?

i thought that too but if that was the case shouldn't the revs jump HIGHER? and i don't think a failing clutch would cause a loud wail.

like happe said, check your belts, most like it's one of them...

Alright thanks guys. Was funny pulling out of the parking lot today and I see a Toyota with the exact same noise ripping out of the parking lot. So at least I know I'm not alone.

When checking my belts and stuff, what am I specifically looking for? Certain wear marks or something?

I'd just replace all of the belts.....unless you are broke. Also....if your car has ever had front end damage, the alternator might be a little cockeyed...and the lip of the belt could be rubbing...that happened on my sisters car before.

University student. Broke isn't the word. It's like minus broke. Crazy debts.

Thanks for the advice tho, I'll check on the alternator.

belts arent too much. from nissan its about 50 bucks for all three. pep boys (or any autostore) might run you around 35 or so. good to do

when you look at belts, look at the bottom (when you are looking top down) for wear such as cracks, missing thread, etc.

its bettter to put out the money now then be STRANDED somewhere and have to pay 5 times more for the tow ride and someone to install them, as wel as the time it takes

changing belts takes about 1 to 2 hours at most
