View Full Version : Throttle tightening for fun and profit

Today I noticed a few things about my S13. First of all, behind the gas pedal there's a plastic stopper held in by one screw against a metal bracket. If you unscrew this screw and put the plastic piece aside, you'll notice you can get the pedal down a slight bit more.

Also, pop the hood and look at the throttle body. There should be 2 throttle cables running into it (they're steel cables like a bycicle's breaks would have). Push your finger down on them and check for any slack. If there's slack, you probably have pedal free play and lag, and ultimitely can't open up the throttle body all the way. This is simple to fix.

Notice the bracket the cable runs through. There's a threaded shaft that the cable is inside of and two nuts. Move the one closest to the throttle body closer to the throttle body until when that nut is pulled back against the bracket the throttle is fully taut. Now, to hold it in place, move the nut closest to the pedal down the shaft until it's tight up against the bracket. There should be no more slack on the cable.

In my 1990, I had to run the nut that was on the throttle body end all the way down the shaft to get it taut, but your mileage may vary.

I took my standard test drive route after doing this and I noticed a fair amount of improvement. My throttle immediately responded whereas before there was a tiny amount of pedal lag. It also seemed to want to rev a slight bit quicker.

Can't you break your throttle cable if it's accidentally overtightened? &nbsp;<img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/notify.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':notify:'>

Potentially, yes. That's why you make sure it's just taut and not under strain.

do u &nbsp;take the whole piece off? and if so could any damage result?

I took just the plastic plate off. One screw, put the block aside. Leave the metal bracket there, it will stop the pedal.

I haven't experienced any damage, and don't expect there is any way I could.

I've read this at least 10 times and attempted to do it, but I still don't fully understand this. Ok, standing directly in front of my engine bay see is 2 steel lines. One goes to the left side, and the other goes to the right. Are these the right lines to adjust? Do I adjust it by tightening the two nuts that hold the steel lines on the right? Sorry for me mechanically illerate and challeged. I can feel that these cables have lots of slack within them. I have a 97 240 BTW. Thanks ahead for helping all of us out

That's what it looks like on my KA24E. Yours should be very similar. What you see is two steel cables going to the throttle body. There's a nut on each side of the bracket. Use these to tense or loosen the cable.

the ouside closer to fender is for cruise dont worry about that one..
just worry about the one inside..
if there are 2 ppl have 1 sit in the car with car not started.. have him press all the way down.. the other guy look at the pulley for the throttle cable and make sure it hits the stopper..
bingo
