can any of you sport bike guys suggest one for me? i weigh as much as a feather so i need a light bike. my cousin's is a 1000R or something. 1986 model. don't laugh it's supposedly quick for it's time (11.08@122). although it's nice, it's too heavy (600lbs) and when i'd be stopped, i'd have to use the tips of my toes to keep it up. if it fell over, i would never get it up.

any suggestions for a smaller, lighter, used bike? how much would it cost? i would like a bike that is more stable than fast, but i guess you can't really get a 'slow' bike. especially when you're used to a 240sx.

well, if youve never ridden before, i suggest starting small on like an early 90's kawasaki ninja 250 or 500. thats wha tim doing, they are small bikes for us lgihtweights (5'10" 142) and they dont have soo much power that it will overwhelm you, so you can focus more on learning properly before you get an uber fast bike

Come on now... 6'2" 165lbs... Step to that. As far as my bike suggestion goes, the new Triumph Speed Four is amazing. It's a 600cc four cylinder that weighs in at 374 lbs.

I sat on one and it felt like a 250cc dirtbike (I've been dirtbiking forever, never really ridden a street bike.)

And with 97hp, shes still got enough go. I never seen a bike like it... Reminiscent (Sp?) of the Speed Triple that Cruise rode in MI2. Check it out, list is only like 6,750.

they are right with starting with the smaller bikes like a 500. a good bike to start on would be a ninja ex500 , they are pretty light and not too powerful and very easy to ride. the only problem with buying the 250 is that you will more than likely get bored of its pwoer very fast. i just started riding 2 months ago and actually started with a yamaha fzr 600 which is a bit fast fir a starter actually. so i suggest a ninja ex500 and my buddy just bought a 1999 for $3000 so you could get an older one for much cheaper. this is my baby now:

As two people have already said, go with the Ninja 250. It will teach you good technique, and then when you step up to a bigger bike you will have better technique and thus be able to go faster. It's true, you might get bored of the power, but it's something that you really should learn to deal with because you will become a better rider because of it. hell (I edit to capitalize "hell" three times, but it refuses to stay) you could even keep the little 250 for a track bike.

Oh yeah, and when you come to stop signs, lean the bike to the left and put your left foot down. Don't put both feet down, have the right foot on the rear brake.

Well, if you had to use the tips of your toes to stay up when you stopped, that just means the seat height was too high for you. You can adjust the seat height on most bikes, via the suspension of course...You should be able to sit on the bike flat-footed while stopped, or at least as clost to flat-footed as you can. As for a beginner's bike, the Ninja 250 I think is even a bit too small. A 500-600 isn't bad, you just have to get the right one. Do NOT start out on a R6...they're quite light up front, and the front end can walk up easily on you if you don't know what you're doing. Don't forget, if you plan on riding long distances, I would suggest looking for something other than a crotch rocket. The seating position tends to get uncomfortable after riding long distances, due to being hunched over the tank and bending your neck back to look through the windsheild. Something like a sports tourer, or touring bike if you are going to ride long distances. I don't know about cruisers though...I could never get used to that seating position. It's like your in a Barc-A-Lounger, leaning back with your feet forward.

BTW, if you're a new rider, I would suggest taking a riding safety course, such as ABATE or something. This helps you learn the basics of riding, as well as helping lower your insurance. Any of your local bike dealers should have info on local programs. Good Luck!

Here's two bikes I wouldn't mind having:

GSX-R 600 Telefonica Movistar Edition

And it becomes strikingly obvious that you have never ridden a sport bike a day in your life.

Actually my butt was less sore than my dad's was on our long trip, and I have an RC51, notorious for it's uncomfortable ergonomics, whereas my father has a Honda Shadow, one of the more comfortable cruisers around.

You do not lean over the tank when you are just crusing around, and even when you do lean over the tank, you never look through the windscreen. The windscreen is there to block wind, not to look through.

No, a 250 is not too small to start on. There's no such thing as too small. In Europe and Japan you are REQUIRED to ride a 125 for at least a year, then a 250 for 2 years, and then you can choose whatever bike you want after that. Guess what, the average rider in Europe and Japan is better than the average rider in America. Coincidence? I think not.

Get the 250...stick with it for a year, then move up in class, I regret not doing the same for myself.

Umm...excuse me? Please do not put words into my mouth...I have ridden sports bikes plenty of times. If you re-read my post, you'll notice I said for long distances...not cruising around town. Perhaps I should have specified long distances. I'm talking like 40-60 + miles of highway riding. Where your doing at least 55-75 mph. That's when they get uncomfortable, unless you want to sit up in that kind of wind the whole time. And it's not so much you butt gets sore, but your back from leaning over the tank. I don't know where you come off saying you don't look through the windshield. If you're not wearing a helmet travelling a long distance as I mentioned above, I'm sure as hell going to do my best to keep my face out of the wind. A pebble hitting you in the face at 65 mph is not a fun thing.

Ok, first off, if you're not wearing a helmet, then you're a fucking idiot. Take as much offense to that statement as you like because you certainly deserve it.

Where do I come off saying that you don't look through the windscreen? Oh maybe the fact that it provides little to no visibility due to the fact that it isn't made to be seen through. It warps everything in your vision, if there was an obstruction on the road, you wouldn't see it in time to be able to react, that's where I come off saying that you don't look through it. But by all means, keep doing so. That combined with the fact that you don't wear a helmet when you ride means that I'll be able to buy spare parts for a track bike relatively soon, just do me a favor and buy a new Honda CBR600RR when it comes out, as that's going to be my platform.

60 mile rides...please! That's cake, how can you even begin to consider that a long ride? I've done plenty of long miles on the highway and the wind never seems to bother me. Highway miles = cruising around, I guess I should have specified what I meant by that. The only time I lean over the tank is when doing backroad twisties. Maybe you've taken one too many helmetless spills on the numerous bikes you have ridden.

DROOL, i'd so hit a Haga!

oops, how did that get in there?

start with a 400-600cc bike, it will be easy enough to start off, and as you get better, it will still have enough power to keep up. Something inexpensive would be like a Suzuki GS500E, or a bandit 400, or maybe a honda hawk. If you wanna spend more money, join the bandwagon and get a GSX-R 600 (although im not really a big fan of the 4's)

Dude, just buy a 600, after a month or so you'll be screaming for more power. I'm buying my roommate's 2000 CBR 600 that he bought less than a year ago. He's already moving up to a 954 with NOS. I'm only paying 5000 for it but you can get a used older bike for a lot less than that. OH yeah, my roomate only weighs 140lbs.

Then you'll be screaming if there's anything left of your face. Most 600's are way more bike than 90% of sportbike riders can handle. Honestly, if I had to do it all over again from this point on, I'd be saving up for an 03 CBR600RR instead of my RC51. The 51 is an awesome bike, but it's just too much for me. Too many mods, too much money, too much hp, too much weight. I'd be crying if I dropped it at a track day. That having been said, I'll never let go of her. I'm planning on picking up a wrecked CBR600RR next year as a track bike. Hope it's not yours.

nismo270r - Rocks in the face don't bother me because I wear a helmet. I did get a bug in there once when I had my visor up at a stoplight. That sucked.

onebadm5 - I hope you know that you've posted pics of 2 different bikes. I've ALWAYS wanted an RS250, but the Haga is a nice scheme for the Mille R. The Mille SP is unobtanium, but bad to the bone. The new Mille's will be copying it's short-stroke design for more oomph.

DrDubbleB - I look through my windscreen all the time. How else are you going to pick up your braking markers while in a tuck? Then again I'm pretty short so I can actually see out of the stocker. You might want to try the HRC screen or something similar on your new 51 if you're a bit taller. On the street I'm kinda 50/50. Sometimes look over the screen, sometimes through.

DrDubbleB
10-02-2002, 07:07 PM
I just tend to look over or around the windscreen (around while cornering). Even when in a tuck, I can see perfectly fine over the thing to be able to find braking points and see debris in the road, etc. I might get an HRC screen, but I'm going to revalve the forks and get a PCIIIr and Sato H/M's before anything else. Actually I might not get Sato's I'm not sure yet what exhaust to get, but that's one of the top ones. I agree about the track thing, ruf. I don't think I'll be tacking the RC to the track. Actually, I had the same plan as you, pick up a wrecked 600RR with a good frame and turn that into my track bike.

gmgs14, you should listen to fodive. Stuntaz piss me off to no avail. People like you and your roommate are what raise insurance prices and give bikers a bad rap.

For a beginner, yes. Balancing and manuevering a heavy bike can be daunting for someone who's not used to it. You cannot just lower a bike in the rear for seat height. It totally compromises the handling of the bike. I have a hard time reaching the ground on my RC51 but I still have to raise the rear another 10mm for the swingarm to be at the appropriate "golden" angle.

Duhh, hello! '02 RSV Mille R "Haga", commemorating the championship ride of Noriyuki "Nori" Haga, Aprila Rider in World SBK. Sure, i love the bare bodywork, and the PS2 logo drives me nuts!

But yeah, the model to definitely get is absolutely the 250. Nothing like it. Light, agile, amazing acceleration, and that mean 2 stroke. MMMMM, I mean, look at the challenge: 299 lbs, and 62 hp. That's FUCKING INSANE!!! I went to the local dealer, and they had only one on consignment, going for $10k. I had to fight the salesmen to sit on it!

Listen up...I was being nice...No need to be a prick about it. There is no helmet law in my state, so I opt not to wear one. That's also why I choose to be a full organ donor. If I choose to ride a bike with no helmet and splatter myself across the highway, I figure someone else can use what's left.

If you ride a motorcycle and don't wear a helmet, you are an idiot. Period. Wearing a helmet means you can also ride better because you can concentrate on the road instead of the wind, dirt, rocks, bugs, etc.

Aside from however you ride (which I don't know), it's the other idiots out on the road that you should worry about. If you're comfortable with killing yourself doing a 100mph standup, then fine. That's just poor judgement, you get what you deserve. BUT... I don't know of ANYONE that would be very receptive to dying because an SUV hit you at 25mph. That would be a pathetic thing to die over.

Thanks for reinforcing my thoughts about some of the people on this forum...and BTW, I am not and idiot, or a "fucking idiot" for that matter. I know that riding a motorcycle without a helmet is more dangerous than riding with one. I know what could happen if I were to wreck without wearing a helmet. I choose not to wear one because I want to. Just like when you speed (and don't tell me you've never sped before) you choose to exceed the speed limit as well as break the law. You know the consequences of what can happen for doing so. Does that make you an idiot? In your mindset, apparently it does...and even more so, because you're also breaking the law, which I am not.

Like I said before, there's a lot of people on this forum that obviously don't understand that there are things in this world called personal choices. And different people make different choices. I see things that are posted everyday that I don't agree with and I don't personally think are right, but do I go and post a reply telling the person they're a fucking idiot? No...because they can do whatever they damn well please to do.

well, nismo270r doesnt own or ride a bike all the time, there fore he chooses not to wear a helmet. i already knows the consequences and he's ready for that.
In theory, he may be an "idiot", but technically he's not. He makes a choice knowing what the consequences are.

It's basically like me wanting to go out ang get a GSXR1000 if i ever feel suicidal
