Having trouble removing the lifters from a S13 SR blacktop. Is there a certain way they come out, cuz they all seem to be stuck. Motor has been sitting for over a year now. Also, there's a ton of funky dried yellow paste all in the head and around the cams and lifters, any ideas as to what the hell that could be? thanks

You just have to wiggle them to get them out, pinch them with your fingers, or maybe wrap a string around them, they come out pretty easy. No idea what the paste is.

Just use some pliers to pull them out. Make sure you wrap it with a cloth so you dont scratch them.

Usually you can just use your fingers and wiggle it around and it should come out.

They make some little rubber covers for the end of vise grips, you can find them at harbor freight.
I use them. It makes it so damn easy...

I tried to wiggle them out by hand and tried plyers, still can't get them out. Even had a friend try and he couldn't pull them either, and he's done it a few times on other motors. Any reasons as to why they would be seized? Should I even try to fire up the motor the way it is?

lets get some pics to identify this "paste"

lifters should pull right out, you will need to use alot of effort but nothing "Crazy"

Try to clean it, PB blaster or WD40 and then try to pull it out with pliers. Sounds like you got a lot cleaning up to do. If theyre stuck that badly, you might need to clean the whole head up and make sure all the oil ports are clean and clog free.

Is there a reason no one mentioned magnets?

You would have to have a rediculously strong magnet to pull it out if you can't pull it out with your fingers.
Ray is right, you should check the oil passages for clogs, not getting oil to your cams would suck.

i wiggle them out. sometimes they come up half way and stick again. So i use a magnet sometimes. its not that out of the question.

you could try putting a little bit of sea foam around them to loosen up the gunk and bleed the lifters while they are out

Eh I wouldnt suggest that because of the possibility of jamming the spring down there too much but like you said don't put it all the way down.

Use the rubber slip overs for the Plyers. That should work.

I have used Vice Grips before with cloth buffer but make sure you dont over tighten them, the Lifters arent made of Diamonds, the RC hardness isnt much better than Mild Steel you will fuck them up if you try hard enough.

pliers and a rag akways works for bastard ones - most should just wiggle out.

if ur having trouble with this - maybe u should get someone to oversee ur putting it back together.

Ok, just making sure that no ones like "theres tiny computers in there that will fry if you use a magnet" or something along those lines
